END SEMESTER EXAMINATION Amity School of Engineering & Technology, Noida B.

TECH (MAE) KINEMATICS AND DYNAMICS OF MACHINES (BTM 401) Time: 3 Hrs. Maximum Marks: 70

Instructions: 1. Write brief procedure for graphical constructions. 2. Sketches should be drawn neatly. 3. Answers without units and with wrong units will carry less marks. 4. Symbols used should be explained atleast once in each solution . 5. Answers without writing equations and equations without substituting the data will carry ZERO marks

Section A
Attempt any five questions. (5 x 6=30 Marks) 1. What are quick return mechanisms? Where are they used? Discuss the functioning of any one of them. 2. State and derive the law of gearing. 3. Derive an expression for the natural frequency of free longitudinal vibrations by equilibrium method. 4. Derive an expression for gyroscopic couple 5. (i) What are cams? How are they classified (3) (ii) Deduce an expression for variation of tractive force for an uncoupled two cylinder locomotive engine. (3) 6. Sketch and explain any two inversions of a double slider crank chain

Section B
Attempt any two questions (2 x 10 = 20 Marks) 7. (i) Deduce an expression for the frictional torque using uniform pressure theory for a conical collar. (5) (ii) The mean diameter of a screw jack having pitch of 10 mm is 50 mm. A load of 20 kN is lifted through a distance of 170 mm.Find the work done in lifting the load if the load rests on the loose head which does not rotate with the screw. The external and internal diameter of the bearing surface of the loose head is 60 mm and 48 mm respectively. The coefficient of friction for all the contact surfaces may be taken as 0.08 (5) 8. Four masses A, B, C and D are completely balanced .Masses C and D make angles of 900 and 2100 respectively with B in the same sense. The planes containing B and C are 300 mm apart. Masses A, B, C and D can be assumed to be concentrated at

radii of 360,480,240 and 300 mm respectively. The masses B, C and D are 15 kg, 25 kg and 20 kg respectively. Determine : a) the mass A and its angular position b) the positions of planes A and D 9. An epicyclic train of gears is arranged as shown in Fig-1.How many revolutions does the arm, to which the pinions B and C are attached, make : a) When A makes one revolution clockwise and D makes half a revolution anticlockwise, and b) When A makes one revolution clockwise and D is stationary? The number of teeth on gears A and D are 40 and 90 respectively.

(Compulsory) 10. (a) A cam rotating clockwise at a uniform speed of 1000 r.p.m. is required to give a roller follower the motion defined below: Follower to move outwards through 50 mm during 1200 of cam rotation Follower to dwell for next 600 of cam rotation. Follower to return to its starting position during next 900 of cam rotation. Follower to dwell for rest of cam rotation The minimum radius of the cam is 50 mm and the diameter of roller is 10 mm, The line of stroke of the follower is offset by 20 mm from the axis of the cam shaft. If the displacement of the follower takes place with uniform acceleration and retardation on both the outward and return stroke, draw profile of cam and find the maximum velocity and acceleration during out stroke and return stroke (10)

(b) A vibrating system consists of mass of 50 kg, a spring of stiffness 20 kN/m and a damper. The damping provided is only 20 % of the critical value. Determine: I. The damping factor II. The critical damping coefficient III. The natural frequency of damped vibrations IV. The logarithmic decrement V. The ration of two consecutive amplitudes. (5) (c) The pulleys of two parallel shafts 8 m apart are 600 mm and 800 mm in diameters and are connected by a crossed belt. It is needed to change the direction of rotation of the driven shaft by adopting the open belt drive. Calculate the change in the length of the belt. (5)
