VOLUNTEERS ACTIVITIES BY SHOAIB SHAFIQ

In volunteer internship service my primary activities is just to spend the time in the designated department and observe how the things going on because the nature of work in the PSRD is very systematic and technical as well. The employees who perform these activities are professional bodies in their respective fields. Apart from the observation of the work I also contribute to the activities which are related to my professional knowledge and experience. In first day orientation was given to me about all the departments of the PSRD Occupational and speech therapy Department (Day 2 & 3) Occupational and speech therapy is seemed to be a very new approach that deals with the various functions of the body. In occupational and speech therapy center they tried to rehabilitate the infants, young adults, school-children and even old age people on very subsidized rates. Assessments primarily examine the form, content, and use of language, as well as reading, writing, and some cognitive functions. In this department I observed they are trying to make the accurate sitting postures of the children and to balance the weights of their bodies with the help of some appliances used to support the movement of their body. Diagnoses of Cerebral palsy, speech and language problems are the main topics in this department. So after making accurate diagnose of the disability they constitute an exercise plan for rehabilitation of the patients muscles which are unable to make any movements. Outdoor Patient Department (OPD) (Day 4 & 5) In this department I tried to analyze the financial condition of the patients on the base of information provided by the patients coming for treatment. In OPD there is a room with the name of social welfare department where every patient enter to answer some specific questions designed to analyze their financial condition after getting an invoice of Rs.20 After getting their short interview they assigned them categories according to his/her financial conditions. There are five categories A, B, C, D and E assigned to the patients by the assignor. A Category Patients Paid Full Fee whereas E Category patients do not pay any fee and get treatment free of cost. Physiotherapy Department (Day 6, 7 & 8) Physiotherapy Centre is a very important department of the PSRD equipped with modern machines and professional physiotherapists to help the patients after diagnosing their disease or

disabilities. This center is one of the best Physiotherapy centre in Lahore that is contributing to make the people an active members of the society. In this centre patients belonging to different categories come and the daily record of their exercises and particular physiotherapist assigned is maintained. In this centre physiotherapists develop a plan using different treatment techniques to promote the muscle movements, reduce pain and to restore disability. In this department I spend three days and along with observation regarding the patient category, modality and exercise, I also help their staff to complete the monthly statements of their patients visit on a daily bases.

Vocational Rehabilitation Centre (Day 9 & 10) VRC provides loan to empower the disabled men and women to start their own enterprises on a very easy installments by allowing a grace period of three months. In this department they also provide loans to those people who got skills certificate from PSRD like having skill of mobile repairing, stitching and sewing, and composing etc. In this department I help the loan collection officer by maintaining the documentation of loan recovery for two days. I also observe how they analyze the financial condition of the loan applicant. First of all they conduct an interview of loan applicant and then visit the site of his house if they find it necessary. Promotion and Public Relation Department (Day 11 & 12) This department usually organized various campaigns for Donation/Zakat and also attempt to present PSRD at different forums. This department has close coordination with donors, sponsors and TV and Radio representatives. The in charge of PR department is Mr. Hamayun who is very diligent person having responsibility to handle all the visitors and volunteers by giving them orientation about all the departments of PSRD. This department also organizes different events of PSRD.

Skill Development Centre (Day 13) In this department different types of skills are develop in both disable and normal boys and girls. The normal candidates pay a very nominal fee to learn these skills like art and craft, sewing and stitching, mobile repairing and computer short course etc. After learning these skills PSRD provides the opportunity to earn a handsome amount of money because it engaged in different types of projects like prepares shoe bag for Ehsan Chappal store etc.
