Did the mayor do his homework on the endorsement issue?

Yesterday, a guy named Mike Rawlings, not to be confused with Mayor Mike Rawlings announced his endorsement of three school board candidates for the upcoming DISD Trustee elections. I looked up the City of Dallas Code of Ethics statement on this issue which says, In any election, except his or her own, a city official shall not use the prestige of the city officials position with the city on behalf of a candidate, political party, or political committee, except that a city official is not prohibited from lending his or her name so long as the office held with the city is not mentioned in connection with the endorsement. So a guy named Mike endorsed three candidates and the local Dallas media outlets published it? I think not. This endorsement is newsworthy because it came from our Mayor. The Mayor, who has prestige and name recognition, is publicly endorsing candidates, in the camouflage of a regular citizen. Regular citizens dont endorse candidates through press releases. Did Mayor Mike jump the gun? He made his endorsements without meeting all the candidates, speaking with them, judging for himself their ability to best represent the voters, to defend the interests of the students and parents of the DISD. Sadly, this endorsement highlights where we remain divided as a city. The mayors investment in public education is welcomed, and can serve to increase awareness and involvement of our community to improve public education. Yet when Mayor Mike calls Educate Dallas our PAC and publicly endorses candidates as Mike, it divides a community. Wouldnt it be more beneficial to use the prestige and influence that comes with being Mayor to serve as a unifying body that rallies constituents around improving public education? I implore everyone including Mayor Mike to do their homework in regards to the upcoming Dallas ISD elections. Meet the candidates. Review their positions. Dont be swayed by their pedigrees or aspirations to higher office. We are at a turning point in Dallas with our public education system. Lets come together and make DISD better for our kids and our community. Its about working together and making decisions that are in the best interest of the kids served by DISD. As a DISD Mom and as a candidate for Trustee in District 1 in the upcoming election, I want what is best for all kids. I told my daughter just yesterday that, I am running for school board so all kids can have a good school to go to. For me its not about the politics and the prestige, its about providing the opportunity for a quality education to all children. Everyday I see the benefits a quality education can provide for a child. Its time to challenge the status quo in Dallas. Our kids are counting on us.
