The newbookseries startedinJune 2007withthree volumes andis novelinits conceptoftreating historicaldevelopmentswithatechnicalapproachtoillustratetheevolutionofmattersofMechanical Engineeringthatarerelatedspecificallytomechanismandmachinescience. Thus, booksintheseries describe historical developments by mainly looking at technical details with the aim to give interpretationsandinsightsofpastachievements.Theattentiontotechnicaldetailsisusednotonlyto track the past by giving credit to past efforts and solutions but mainly to learn from the past approachesandproceduresthatcanstillbeofcurrentinterestandusebothforteachingandresearch. The Machines of Leonardo da Vinci and Franz Reuleaux Kinematics of Machines th fromtheRenaissancetothe20 Century
ThisbookexaminestheevolutionofmachinedesignmethodologyfromtheRenaissancetotheAgeof th th Machinesinthe19 centuryformingultimatelyalsothebaseofthe20 centurymachinery. Already Leonardo planned to write a book on basic machine elements. Such a book was finally written by ReuleauxinBerlinwhoclassifiedthebasicelementsofmachinedesignenumeratingsixbasicclasses ofmechanismstochangemotionfromoneformtoanother. ThedesignideasofLeonardoandReuleauxareplacedinthehistorical, economicandsocialcontext oftheirtimes.ThereisalsoanappendixwithashortdescriptionofthefamousTheatreofMachines th th booksofthe15 tothe18 centuries.Thebookmakesuseoftheuniquecollectionof230kinematic models of Reuleaux at Cornell University. Detailed comparisons of 20 basic machine mechanisms suchastheslidercrankandfourbarlinkagesinbothLeonardosdrawingsandReuleauxsmodelsare th made. These models illustrate the elegance and aesthetics of machine design in the 19 century pioneeredbyReuleaux. TheauthorFrancisC.MoonisaworldwidewellknownexpertonthelifeworkofFranzReuleauxand works as Curator of the Reuleaux Kinematic Model Collection at Cornell University. In his book, Moon gives a convincing argument that the development of a rational design methodology for th machines that grew from the time of Leonardoto the early 20 century was as great a feat as the inventionsofthemachinesthemselves.

ReconstructionDesignofLostAncientChineseMachinery
This book presents an innovative approach for the reconstruction design of lost ancient Chinese machinery.Bycombiningthecreativemechanismdesignmethodologywiththemechanicalevolution andvariationtheory, allfeasibleandappropriatedesignsthatareconsistentwiththesciencetheories and techniques of the subject time period can be systematically recreated. South pointing chariots, walking machines, the seismograph, and the astronomical mechanical clock are used as illustrated examples.Thecultural,scientific,andtechnologicalbackgroundoftheseachievementsareexplained. Beforenewliteratureisfound, thisbookprovidesanoveldirectionandauniquetoolforstudyingthe lost machinery in ancient China and around the world. Furthermore, after reacquaintance with invaluableancientwisdom, stimulatinginnovativemachineryisalsoanticipated. The author HongSen Yan is Chair Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the NationalChengKungUniversityofTainan.HeisatthesametimeChairmanoftheBoardofTrustees ofAncientChineseMachineryCulturalFoundationinTainanandaspecialistandcollectorofancient Chineselocks.
