native land, Great Britain, to help ease the pain of a mother, a father, brother, sister, sweetheart, wife or friend. This young, unknown soldier was laid to rest in Westminster Abbey on Armistice Day, November 11, 1920. It was Congressman Hamilton Fish, Jr., of New York, who on December 21, 1920, first called for an unknown American solider to be brought home to be buried in a tomb in Arlington National Cemetery. This act was approved by Congress on March 4, 1921. On November 11, 1921, a young man killed in France was laid to rest at the Memorial Amphitheater in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. The Congressional Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Service Cross were bestowed upon the Unknown Soldier by President Warren Harding. Since then an unidentified American soldier has been laid to rest in the Tomb with highest honors for World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. However, DNA testing led to the identity of the Vietnam hero and his body was returned to the family in 1998. The Vietnam crypt remains empty to this day. After the ceremonies were completed, a marble crypt was placed over the site. However, the Tomb was changed to include a sculpture designed by Lorimer Rich and carved by Thomas H. Jones of New York. It is constructed of White Yule Marble from Colorado, costing $48,000. The four pieces total a weight of 79 tons. It was presented to the public on April 9, 1931. The north and the south faces of the Tomb display six inverted (upside down) wreaths, three on each side. These wreaths represent

Remembering those who have given their lives for their country

s we enter the month of May, many of us make plans to celebrate Memorial Day. Some of us plan picnics, family gatherings, perhaps attend a parade, or just celebrate the fact that we have the day off from school or work. But in truth, Memorial Day is a time that we are asked to remember those who have given the highest gift of all, their lives, for our country. It has been said that war takes from us our healthy, bright, young men and women, who have their entire lives in front of them, knowing that some will never return. It was in Europe just after World War I that Reverend David Railton set out to honor the body, the symbol, of one unknown serviceman by transporting him back to his

mourning and the six major battle campaigns of World War I: Ardennes, Belleau Woods, Chateau-Thierry, MeusseArgonne, Oisiu-Eiseu, and Somme. The East side has three figures representing Peace, Victory, and Valor. Peace, a female figure, is holding a dove in her left hand. The right hand of Peace is holding the hand of Victory, another female

figure. Victory extends an olive branch. The male figure, Valor, holds a broken sword while facing Victory. On the west side an inscription reads: Here Rests In Honored Glory An American Soldier Known But To God. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is guarded 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year by Tomb Guard Sentinels.

Red, White, and Blue Berries

12-16 ounces of fresh strawberries 12 ounce bag of white baking chips Blue sanding sugar or blue sprinkles Spread wax paper to place finished strawberries on. Place baking chips in microwaveable bowl and heat at 30 second intervals, stirring each time, until chips are melted and smooth. Holding strawberry by the hull (hull is the leafy green top), dip in melted white chocolate chips about of the way up the strawberry, bottom to top (remember, only of the way you want some red to show.) Shake off excess white coating and immediately dip in the blue sanding sugar or sprinkles way up the area already covered in white. (Again, be sure that only of the white coating is covered allowing you to see red, white, and blue on each berry.) Place on wax paper until coating has hardened. Party hint: If you plan on making several for guests, place each dipped strawberry in a cupcake paper liner. (Makes a portable dish for your guest.)
