Functions and Significance of Assignments/ Homeworks to Parents and Pupils/Students

Rosario T. Rodrigo Teacher III Limay Elementary School Students and parents for one reason or another are not always happy with assignments or homeworks, especially when they are given on Fridays, that is why, last September 16, 2011, the Department of Education (DepEd) issued a Memorandum No. 392 s.2011, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS No homeworks on Fridays Policy citing parents complaints about the heavy weekend study load of their children; moreover, they want their children to enjoy their childhood and spend quality time with them without being burdened by the thought of doing lots of homeworks. However, homeworks when done properly, leads to mastery of learning. So Fridays or not, when homewroks are properly explained and assigned will result to achievement of purpose. Teachers and students alike is the last but not the least part of every class session. It is a way of extending the school day by providing pupils/ students the opportunity to refine and extend their knowledge. This is done through practice and advance preparation or reading. With limited hours in the classroom and with so much content to cover, sometimes teachers run out of time for necessary extended practice. Giving homeworks can help. Research has proven that for every 30 minutes of additional homeworks a student does per night, his or her over-all grade point average (GPA) increases about half a point. This means that if a student with a GPA of 2.0 increases the amount of homework he/she does by 30 minutes per night, her GPA will rise to 2.50 (Keith, T.Z (1982). Homeworks also help cultivate good study habits. It likewise communicates to the child that learning takes place work at home as well as in school thus strengthening the home and school connection and the parent-teacher partnership for the education of the child. For teachers, it is not a tool to assess the learning needs of learners with multiple intelligences and varied learning styles by way of creative subject requirements and authentic assessment techniques such as videotapes, posters, artworks, skits, poetry writing, song or jingle compositions which can not be done within the limited class time. The DepEds issuance of Memorandum, on No Assigns on Fridays are most welcome by students, parents and teachers alike, but from Mondays to Thursday, teachers must see to it that its purpose and outcome should be identified and articulated.

1. Makipag-ugnayan sa mga taong may kinalaman sa iyong pagpapakitang-turo. Halimbawa: Ang iyong propesor sa asignaturang observation/off campus sa Dean ng College of Education, sa Cooperating Teacher (dating critic teacher) upang mapagusapan ang ibang detalye. 2.

Good luck at Happy Graduation Day!

THE MATHEMATICS
Rosario Rodrigo Teacher III Limay Elementary Bataan The quality of mathematics education in the Philippines is alarming as stated in some research findings. However, different remedies and measures have been adapted to address this dilemma, which according to this research are coming from different reasons and causes. Seminars, trainings, fora, conferences, practical strategies and techniques for improving Mathematics teaching especially. In the secondary level are suggested for the teachers who are committed to improve and attain level of proficiency in numeracy among pupils/students through proper math teaching. Mathematics is an integral part of oir lives No one on the face of the earth ever escaped numbers; since they occur many million times your lifetime, But despite these measures that have been exhausted to remedy the present status, mathematics teaching remains to have low quality. What are some of the proposed solutions, suggestions that we can think of? Mathematics remains to be a challenging yet enjoyable discipline, because of this a mathematics teacher needs to develop students capacity for critical thinking and logical reasoning. Teaching mathematics to students can be so exhausting simply because math is so different in so many ways compared to all other subjects. Grasping these fundamentals will greatly aid in ensuring students mastery of this subject. According to Duque (1999) some of the characteristics of teachers who elicit the strongest achievement gains from their students are the following: 1. Appropriate expectation and a sense of efficacy. Teachers believe that students are capable of learning and that these teachers can teach the students. If students do not learn something the first time, these teachers teach it again. In general, teachers express proactive and appropriate expectations for learning. 2. Classroom Management and organization - they organize their classrooms as effective learning environments and use management techniques that maximize the time students spend in lessons and activities. 3. Opportunity to Learn The teacher spends more hours each year on academic tasks. 4. Curriculum Pacing The teacher allows continuous progress for students by moving through the curriculum up to the end. 5. Active Teaching The teacher instructs, demonstrates skills, and explains concepts well, explaining concepts and reviewing them when necessary. 6. Supportive Learning Environment The teacher maintains pleasant, friendly classrooms and is perceive as enthusiastic, supportive instructions. The search for a quality Mathematics teaching will continue in all levels of the educational system and in different areas of discipline. Theres no doubt that if quality teaching will be evident, theres no reason why Filipino students will not love Mathematics.
