Dream Big-Read! Summer Reading Programs for Children at RPL

Rowan Public Library invites children of all ages to Dream Big Read! this summer. Sign your child up for a fun filled summer of programs and reading. Pre-registration begins on May 14th at all library locations for children ages 12 months to rising fifth graders. Our Dream Big - Read! arts and crafts Kick-off events will be held on Thursday, June 14th at the South Rowan Regional Library in China Grove from 3:30 pm 5:00 pm, at the East Branch in Rockwell on Friday,

June 15th from 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm and at Headquarters in Salisbury on Saturday, June 16th from 10:00 am 12:00 pm. All programs begin on June 18th and run until August 2nd. RPL staff will be entertaining the youngest participants, while professional performers dream big with the school-aged children. These guests include Greg Zelnik, Rags 2 Riches, Red Herring Puppets, Steve Brogan, Sharon Clarke and Ro and Mo.

The staff and Friends of RPL are excited to offer family programs again this year to our patrons in the western part of Rowan County with programs held at Cleveland Town Hall. Check with your local library for times and dates of all programs. Teens! Own the Night This Summer

Teens can have fun this summer participating in the Own the Night Summer Reading Program where they will explore the night through fun programs and reading. Preregistration begins on May 14th at all library locations for rising 6th graders to 12th graders. All programs starting June 19th and running through July 26th will be held from 3:30 pm 5:00 pm. Programs will take place on Tuesdays at Headquarters in Salisbury, Wednesdays at the East Branch in Rockwell, and Thursdays at the South Rowan Regional location in China Grove. Each week our teen Own the Night events will focus on exploring our world at night from nocturnal animals to the constellations in the sky. Each teen will receive a booklet when they register for summer reading to keep track of library dollars to be used to bid on great prizes provided by the Friends of Rowan Public Library and other local sponsors. Winners will be announced at a special program to be held at the end of Summer Reading.

He also enjoys playing with brothers Clay and Al Lunsford (distant relatives of Bascom Lunsford), noted for their fingerpicking style on guitar and banjo. Clay has been called one of the greatest thumb pickers ever heard. Clay founded and serves as president of the North Carolina Thumb & Finger Style Guitar players, dedicated to promoting, teaching, and enjoying this special guitar style. Be sure to join us for this great evening of traditional music featuring these immensely talented gentlemen sponsored by the Friends of Rowan Public Library. After the program light refreshments will be served and there will be a chance to chat with the musicians.

The Friends of RPL and Collette Vacations are pleased to announce a trip featuring Trains and Canyons of the Southwest for April 12-20, 2013.

1940 Census Released

For many people researching family history, it can be helpful to start with a relative in the most recent census and work their way backwards to earlier generations. There is a 72 year restriction on access to the census and the National Archives releases this information every ten years. Until April 2, the most recent census available was the 1930 census. On April 2 the 1940 census was released. It is available free of charge through the National Archives website. The census cannot be searched by individual names yet; an index is being developed. The data can be accessed by a geographic location called an enumeration district [ED]. In 1850, the census began recording the name of each person living in the household. The relationship between them is not stated and consequently not always clear. The information requested on each subsequent census is different for each year but might include names, gender, marital status, age at marriage, country or state of birth, occupation, etc. All kinds of interesting tidbits can be discovered within the census record.
