But still majority have just been taking up some form of philanthropic activities for its stakeholders. Nurturing a strong corporate culture which emphasizes Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) values and competencies is required to achieve the synergistic benefits. The employees of an organization occupy a central place in developing such a culture which underlines CSR values and competencies. The present study, therefore, is an attempt to explore the engagement of human resource management professionals in undertaking Corporate Social Responsibility. It also suggests Human Resource Management to take a leading role in encouraging CSR activities at all levels. The combined impact of CSR and human resource activities, which reinforce desirable behavior, can make a major contribution in creating long term success in organizations. The awareness that companys must have a social conscience is becoming increasing important. Power demands a social conscience. Therefore it is necessary for big companies, to play the role of a catalyst. The role of a catalyst helping to solve social problems by their social involvement. Corporates must involved in special areas like national integration , sports, health and education and training . History has always tried to balance power and responsibility. Therefore corporate must accepts social responsibility people look at businessmen now a days as a combination of professionalism and humanity. The public judges a company according to human values.

DEFINITIONS CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Corporate Social Responsibility is defined as operating a business that meets or exceeds the ethical, legal, commercial and public expectations that society has of business. The ideal definition of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been given by World Business Council for Sustained Development which says, Corporate Social Responsibility is the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as of the local community and society at large.

The meaning of CSR is two fold: On one hand, it exhibits the ethical behavior that an organization exhibits towards its internal and external stakeholders (customers as well as employees). On the other hand, it denotes the responsibility of an organization towards the environment and society in which it operates.

2. According to WOOD ,the basic idea of Corporate Social Responsibility is that business and society are interwoven rather than distinct entities .

3. The specific publication by BROWN ON Social Responsibilit Social responsibility of a businessman advocates that industry has an obligation to pursue those policies, to make those decisions, to follow those lines of action which are desirable in terms of the actions and values of the society.

4. Corporate Social Responsibility is defined as operating a business that meets or exceeds the ethical, legal, commercial and public expectations that society has of business.

5. Corporate Social Responsibility is one such effective tool that synergizes the efforts of Corporate and the social sector agencies towards sustainable growth and development of societal objectives at large.

OVERVIEW
Social responsibility is the obligation of organization management to make decision and take actions that will enhance the welfare and interests of society as well as the organization. Social responsibility is quite important to the society, organization and human. There are several reasons to support the importance of social responsibilities. It is related to the ethical responsibility, and differentiates into difference level of social responsibilities, which is economic, legal, ethical, and discretionary responsibilities. There are six main areas of social responsibility, the employees, providers of finance, consumers, commuIt is known that there are many arguments for and against corporate social responsibility. These arguments have been encapsulated into two points of view. Those who believe that organizations should not be concerned about social responsibility base many of their arguments on the costs involved and whether organizations should shoulder those costs on behalf of society. Those who are in favor of corporate social responsibility feel that organizations benefit from society and, therefore, have an obligation to improve it. Although there is no universal agreement, surveys and other reports indicate that many organizations are, in fact, becoming increasingly active in addressing social concerns.

The advantages and important of social responsibilities are being discussed here. This action would be taken by some organization base on their view. To have social responsibilities, the suppliers, business associates, and customers would be more confidence on the organization. So, the products and services of the organizations increase and lead to maximize profit.nity and environment, government, and other organizations or groups. CSR activities have their advantages. The benefits are in terms of building a positive image, encouraging social involvement of employees, which in turn develops a sense of loyalty for the organisation. CSR activities help bond employees as a team and with the organisation, which, in turn, helps in creating a dedicated workfo With serious money and human resources involved how does it benefit the organisation? It is not uncommon to hear of rumours that in many cases no actual work was done and projects were shown on paper to gain tax exemptions. Most organisations, however, vehemently deny such allegations as funds are strictly dedicated to such projects and monitored by company boards. CSR is increasingly becoming the part of corporate governance. Yet another allegation is that CSR is just a brand-building exercise. Getting associated with a cause might create an apparent impact, but that does not generate any tangible profits for the organisation.

While it does help develop their brand and convey to the public that it is a socially conscientious company, it is a natural fall out and not a deliberate attempt. Kalpana Jaishankar, Director HR, Geometric Software Solutions believes that organisations today cannot have a how I can benefit attitude as employees are sensitive on such issues. However, one of the biggest advantages of such activities is the creation of an internal brand. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is generally used to describe businesss efforts to achieve sustainable outcomes by committing to good business practices and standards. While the concept may be relatively new in the region, the actual practices and related policies are not new. The key role and responsibility are often discussed in the aspects of business, social and the environment. Corporate Social Responsibility is one such niche area of Corporate Behaviour and Governance that needs to get aggressively addressed and implemented tactfully in the organizations. At the same time CSR is one such effective tool that synergizes the efforts of Corporate and the social sector agencies towards sustainable growth and development of societal objectives at large. India is a fast growing economy and is booming with national and multinational firms. At the same time, the Indian land also faces social challenges like poverty, population growth, corruption, illiteracy just to name a few. Therefore it is all the more imperative for the Indian companies to be sensitized to CSR in the right perspective in order to facilitate and create an enabling environment for equitable partnership between the civil society and business.

IMPORTANCE OF CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IN BUSINESS

The Internet has rapidly become the tool of choice for spreading information about companies around the world. The thing every company fears most is becoming the target of a powerful single-issue campaign group. So, rather than wait for it to happen, it is better to take pre-emptive action in the form of environmental product development and labelling, or engaging in such ideas as codes of conduct and social audits. We have to take cognisance of the new forces in the consumer market, where the consumer-citizen is metamorphosing (gradually in countries like India) into a citizen-consumer. Cause marketing, development partnerships and environmental concerns make good business sense - particularly in terms of recycling materials, employee satisfaction and morale, building up reputational capital and as a distinctive brand marketing tool. Due to pressure from multiple social forces, the States has formulated new consumer rights and environment conservation legislation. In India, for instance, we have the Consumer Protection Act, 1986. Full one-quarter of the worlds total financial wealth is tied up in intangible assets such as reputation, brand equity, strategic positioning, alliances, knowledge .

NEED FOR CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

There is a need to develop a more coherent and ethically-driven discourse on corporate social responsibility because:

Corporate social responsibility offers a two-way street to companies: on the one hand stimulating innovative business and technological initiatives which would open up new avenues for company operations and focus on the prospect of touching new market zones.

It would give a cleaner societal reputation and socially responsible identity to companies, involving the companies and their employees in the long-term process of positive social transition.

We can no longer be blinkered about the earths resources, or ignore the fact that the economy is constructed on the foundation of natural resources.

Green-washing should go beyond tokenism to an imperative priority in industrial and technological futures.

The human rights perspective should be integrated in the very core of corporate social responsibility. The emerging role of civil society in governance cannot be wished away. Corporations are meant to derive profits out of services they provide to consumer-citizens and they must see themselves as private institutions for public good.

All public institutions need to be accountable to the people at large, especially in the context of health hazards, radiation, genetically-modified food, the chemicalisation of the food processing industry and of agriculture.

OBJECTIVE
Generate awareness and impart skills amongst the corporate, civic bodies and govt. bodies regarding the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility as an effective tool for creating an enabling environment of equitable partnership between civil society and business.

The Business Case for CSR

CSR is increasingly being seen as an important and integral part of normal business operations. So h ow does responsible business help to enhance business operations, in achieving a sustainable outcome?

Create Shareholder Value Investors are becoming more concerned to invest in companys that act with good corporate governance and social responsibility. Increasingly, a companys performance as a responsible business is key to its financial and stock market standing, helping to protect it from instability and share price volatility. Increased Revenue Base

CSR can boost factors that drive revenue in important ways. CSR initiatives and cause-related marketing could build reputation and goodwill among suppliers and customers. Employees who identified with the social mission are likely to be motivated, committed and more prepared to make sacrifices as a team member. Strategic Branding A companys reputation is fundamental in maintaining and attracting new customer base. Consumers today are more sophisticated, becoming more selective and sensitive to a companys image and CSR efforts. A distinctive CSR profile serves as a strategic branding tool in differentiating from competitors.

Operations Efficiency The efficiency of a business is about productivity and effective use of resources. CSR can help to increase efficiency through environment conservation and recycling initiatives, as part of Eco-efficiency strategy. Positive management-employee relations are also crucial in bringing about good customer service, productivity and product innovation. Better Access to Capital Access to capital enables a company to grow and make timely investment. Companies with good CSR standing are likely able to secure equity and debt capital with most ease. The growth emphasis in Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) is a clear indication of likely future trends.

Human & Intellectual Capital A companys human and intellectual capital is one of its most valuable assets. Good workplace conditions and relations can help a company to attract, keep and develop human capital, keeping operations and staff morale high. Community involvement can play a complementary role in developing new skills set, encouraging participation, sharing and team spirit in the workplace as well. Lower Business Risk Companies are being held increasingly accountable for their actions today. Such business risk could affect reputation, access to capital and even long-term viability in some instance. Proactive dialogue with external stakeholders can help to foster understanding, in preempting and minimizing the repercussions. .

THE TWO DIMENSIONS OF CSR

CSR has two dimensions; the first is concerned with the internal policies of companies and the second is concerned with the external environment in which companies operate.

The Internal Dimension of CSR

The internal dimension comprises human capital, health and safety and restructuring. Companies influence employment through the quality of jobs they provide, through production, employee relations and investments. Therefore, internal CSR strategies need to be based on an integrated and balanced approach incorporating a comprehensive set of policies, practices and programs with regard to economic and social factors.

Employees and human resources Companies often face huge challenges in attracting and retaining employees of quality. Suggestions to overcome these challenges include improving internal information networks, developing specific training programmes (local or otherwise), providing opportunities for apprenticeship, offering enhanced equal employment opportunities and remuneration packages for men and women. Better retention of employees often saves companies money through increased productivity and a reduction in recruitment costs. In addition, responsible non discriminatory recruitment practices are needed to encourage the recruitment of women, those from ethnic minorities, the long term unemployed, and older and disabled persons.

Health and Safety Issues regarding health and safety (H&S) at work, although currently addressed by abundant legislative and enforcement measures, can be tackled by complementary voluntary schemes in order to raise H&S standards in the workplace. It should be examined whether it is sufficient for companies to meet the minimum requirements without taking additional measures to complement existing legislation. Under current legislation, all companies must have a health and safety policy and keep health and safety records, although there is no explicit requirement for companies to include health and safety matters in their Annual Reports.

Company Restructuring Company reorganisation has serious effects both on the workforce and other stakeholders. It seems, however, that restructuring operations can fail to achieve their objectives of reducing costs, increasing productivity and improving quality and customer service because of the damage caused to staff morale. Therefore, it appears necessary for responsible restructuring to take account of the interests and concerns of all of those affected by the restructuring process, for example, by safeguarding employees rights, vocational retraining and ensuring the establishment of procedures for information-sharing, dialogue, co-operation and partnership. In addition, some have argued that, upon completion of a restructuring exercise, companies must continue to ensure the employability of their staff. The External Dimension of CSR This second dimension of CSR involves: local communities, business partners, suppliers and consumers, human rights, and environmental concerns.

Local communities A particularly important aspect of CSR is the relationship between companies and the local community in which they are based. Companies are often brought into contact with new societies and social structures, and are thus faced with very different expectations, for example, in the areas of health and safety, employment practices and environmental protection. Companies have an interest in operating in environments free from armed conflict or disease, where an educated and healthy workforce is available, where investments are not endangered by unstable institutions and corrupt regimes. Furthermore, companies often recruit staff and obtain clients from the local community. Involvement in community projects can help strengthen ties between a company and the local population and this, together with the companys reputation as a local employer, may positively influence its competitiveness and help a smooth integration into the local community. Business partners, suppliers and consumers It seems clear that the social performance of companies can affect and be affected by the social practices of their business partners, suppliers and consumers. For example, the City of London Corporation in its Policy Statement on CSR, has noted that some organisations are concerned with the CSR policies of their suppliers and their consistency with the key elements of their own CSR policies. The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has, however, voiced its disapproval regarding the use of public procurement procedures to enforce policy initiatives. In its view, broader objectives, such as CSR, should be reflected in procurement practice only when limited to occasions where those objectives are directly relevant to the intended outputs of individual procurements.

Human Rights CSR has a large human rights element, which the Organisation for Economic and Co-operative Development (OECD) Guidelines, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) standards and the United Nations Global Compact have recognised, especially in regard to multinational companies. The human rights issue involves complex political, legal and moral questions, for example, how companies identify where their areas of responsibility lie as distinct from those of governments and how they operate in countries where human rights abuses are widespread.

THE OTHER DIMENSIONS OF CORPORATE RESPONSIBILTY Economic- responsibility to earn profit for owners. Legal- responsibility to comply with the law.

Ethical- not just acting for profit but doing what is right, just & fair. Voluntary and philanthropic- promoting human welfare & goodwill. Ultimately being a good Corporate Citizen by contributing to the community and the quality of life. However we all know that not all business organisations in our industry behave in a socially responsible manner and there are a number of people who would argue that it is not the job of business to be concerned about social issues and problems.

Advantages of corporate social responsibility: Corporate social responsibility offers manifold benefits both internally and externally to the companies. Externally: It creates a positive image amongst the people for its company and earns a special respect amongst its peers. It creates short term employment opportunities by taking various projects like construction of parks, schools, etc. Working with keeping in view the interests of local community bring a wide range of business benefits. For example, for many businesses, local customers are an important source of sales. By improving the reputation, one may find it easier to recruit employees and retain them. Businesses have a wider impact on the environment also. Plantation and cultivation activities taken up by Intel India are a step towards the same. Recycling used products also acts as a step towards minimizing wastes. Internally: It cultivates a sense of loyalty and trust amongst the employees in the organizational ethics. It improves operational efficiency of the company and is often accompanied by increases in quality and productivity. More importantly, it serves as a soothing diversion from the routine workplace practices and gives a feeling of satisfaction and a meaning to their lives. Employees feel more motivated and thus, are more productive. Apart from this, CSR helps ensure that the organization comply with regulatory requirements.

THE DISADVANTAGES OF CSR CSR can be mere corporate language and politically correct boxticking, rather than a commitment to concrete action. In such cases the benefits for the charity may be superficial at best. The charity's reputation may risk being tarnished by association with particular corporates. Lack of equality or even exploitation within the partnership. Some companies, for example, stand accused of promoting an initiative more for their own benefit, to enhance credibility or profit, rather than to aid a charity or the community. CSR is likely to be one of many initiatives embarked upon by a company. Depending on the priorities of those responsible it may be the case that CSR is a lower priority for the corporate than it is for your organisation. You should, therefore, be wary of the risk of becoming overly reliant on a corporate body. However much you benefit from a company's input, you should seek to maintain your charity's independence.

CSR activities:
Wipro Cares is an initiative by the Wiproites, their family members and friends to contribute in the areas of education, community and social development. Wipro Cares philosophy is to utilize the collective wisdom of volunteers to bring long term benefits and satisfaction to the community, as we believe that providing funds alone will not help the community. This is a unique corporate experiment to channelise the contributions of the Wiproites matched by Wipro, and the desires of Wiproites to make meaningful contributions to society, on a continuous basis. Wipro Cares contributes through two pronged strategy: providing rehabilitation to survivors of natural calamities and enhancing learning abilities of children from the under privileged sections of the society Leaning enhancement : Wipro Cares has initiated Learning Enhancement Programmes at schools catering to the children from the under privileged section of the society. The main objectives of this programme is to improve the standards of learning, build confidence, ignite curiosity, broaden their awareness levels, improve their communication skills in English , build a healthy self-esteem and help them break through self imposed limits to achieve his/her greatest potential. In line with its focus, these programmes have been successfully implemented in Olcott Memorial School in Besantnagar, Chennai and Government Secondary School in Viveknagar, Bangalore. The Olcott Memorial School in Besantnagar, Chennai is a 110 years old Tamil medium school run by the theological

Society. Wipro Cares volunteers work with the students of classes 4 and 5 (total strength -120 children), for about two hours on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of every month. The Government Secondary School in Viveknagar, Bangalore in run in three different languages-Tamil, Telegu Kannada .Volunteers who are comfortable in communicating in one of these languages take up the responsibility of each class where they devote 2 hours every Saturday. The volunteers work with children from class 2 onwards. As we go along, we plan to roll this programme in several more schools and in other cities. Wipro Cares volunteers devote 2 hours every Saturday with the ultimate desire to make learning fun for these children. Once the volunteer builds a good rapport with a group of threefour children, he or she would work on the holistic development of these children - to instill confidence among them, to build communication skills, encourage their creativity and thinking ability. Makkala Jagriti - Wipro Cares Learning Centre: A Learning Center focused on providing enriching, exciting, safe and secure environment to children from under privileged sections of the society was inaugurated by Makkala Jagriti, and Wipro Cares in Bangalore. Makkala Jagriti is an NGO, whose focus is to work with underprivileged children in the area of education. The Learning Centre will also provide opportunities for contributing to the community to Wipro employees, their friends and families. They can get involved by interacting, involving, teaching & learning in mutually enriching way to reach quality-learning environment to the economically disadvantaged children in an integrated manner through the Learning Centre..

Summer Camp for Children The idea of interacting with the children of the school using creative and innovative ways such as arts, crafts and other fun activities appealed to the Wipro Cares volunteers. It had two fold objectives: First, to stay in touch with the children that they were involved with during the summer break. Second, to make the summer holidays enjoyable for these children, who would otherwise have to spend time playing with mud and sand outside their homes, when their parents go to work. The activities also brought forth the hidden talents of these children (and the volunteers!) be it story telling with hand puppets, painting or clay modeling. A group of volunteers took on the additional responsibility of organizing the camp, with the support of the administration. They planned out different activities every Saturday. The summer camps also helped these children develop their skills, confidence and motivation to succeed not just in classrooms but in life.

Providing Basic Infrastructure at the School For a child to come regularly to the school and stay interested in school activities, it is necessary hat the school is equipped with proper infrastructure. Moreover, research has shown that lack of toilets facilities for girls is the main reason for the high drop out rates among students. In the Government School in Veveknagar, Bangalore-India, Wipro Cares has constructed toilet blocks to cater to e student population. Along with that, we have provided a gate, which will ensure that the kids will not run out of the school to the roads, which may be dangerous. Small but thoughtful contributions from

Wipro Cares Disaster

Wipro Cares has adopted Pushpavanam village in tsunamiravaged belt of Tamil Nadu with a desire to rehabilitate survivors and rebuild the village. Our partner in this effort is BITsunami, a trust formed by the alumni of BITS, Pilani. Pushpavanam, about an hour's drive from Nagapattinam, has around 1200 house holds with a population of about 6000. It lost 19 people to the tsunami which washed away 200 houses; 500 families lost their livelihood and another 250 families were affected indirectly; 35 boats supporting around 200 families, an important means of livelihood were lost or damaged and almost all cultivable land (about 100 acres) was left barren, leaving both cultivators and the agricultural labourers without a means of livelihood. What we did earlier in Orissa and Gujarat? The damage caused by these calamities was huge; thousands of lives were lost, lakhs rendered homeless, land owners suffered incalculable losses. The calamity affected people had to begin from scratch. Wipro Cares' contribution in both these states, which were hit by two calamities of hither-to-unseen dimensions, (Cyclone in Orissa in 1999 and earthquake in Gujarat in 2001) is unique. After mobilizing funds from Wiproites which was matched by Wipro, Wipro Cares set up a team to evaluate the damage during both these calamities. Our rehabilitation work was done after detailed discussions with the survivors and analyzing their needs. Amount spent on CSR : No information regarding the amount spent on CSR was available on the homepage .

Successful programmes on social responsibility rely heavily on enlightened people management practices. In this context HR department is assumed to be the coordinator of CSR activities in getting the employment relationship right which is a precondition for establishing effective relationships with external stakeholders and thus can orient the employees and the organization towards a socially responsible character. There is also an increasing trend in the corporate sector which has started leveraging upon employees and their management for exhibiting their commitment towards CSR. Armed with a strong and committed organizational culture reinforced by responsible Human Resource Management practices, the organizations can achieve heights of success by improved profitability, employee morale, customer satisfaction, legal compliance and societal approval for its existence. It is high time for all other organizations which have been paying only lip service to CSR that they must capitalize upon the existing Human Resource Department in framing such practices, procedures and policies that ensure the internalization of quality, ethics and excellence in the whole system. By doing this they can sensitize the employees and the whole organization towards CSR without adding any additional cost. To recapitulate it can be said that companies have increasingly felt the need to co-ordinate their CSR activities and demonstrate their commitment to social
