Cengage Learning, 4th edition(2011); ISBN-10: 0495809861 DEPARTMENT OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the Criminal Justice Department is to impart knowledge and promote critical thinking about the crime problem, and its control through criminal justice institutions and public cooperation. Students receive comprehensive criminal justice education with courses taken in the areas of criminal law, criminology, policing, courts, corrections, and crime prevention, in the context of a general and liberal arts education, with background in the social sciences. The main aim of the department is to help students develop the knowledge and analytical abilities to become agents of change in criminal justice organizations and serve well the communities in which they are located. LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR STUDENTS MAJORING IN CRIMNAL JUSTICE: develop the knowledge of criminal justice theories and practices, and professional abilities to address criminal justice issues for crime control. gain a liberal arts education to help understand human behavior and cultural diversity, and follow ethically fair practices and integrative values to serve and live in a democratic society. develop abilities and skills to analyze crime and criminal justice issues in a disciplined and critical manner for policy-making and problem-solving. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Examination of causes of delinquency; distribution and patterns in delinquency over time and space, by age, gender, and ethnicity; individual and collective forms of delinquency in community and school context; history, development and philosophy of juvenile courts; legal rights of juveniles, and the judicial processing of juveniles; critical evaluation of the current juvenile justice practices, and punishment, rehabilitation and prevention programs. Prerequisite(s): Advanced sophomore standing

COURSE OUTCOMES: UNDERSTANDING OF THE JUVENILE JUSTICE PHILOSOPHIES; IDENTIFYING KEY PROCESSING POINTS OF THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM; BE KNOWLEDGABLE OF JUVENILE JUSTICE PROCEDURES; BECOME AWARE OF JUVENILE PROGRAM ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES;

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: A. EXAMS THREE MAJOR EXAMS ARE SCHEDULED. THE QUESTIONS WILL BE A COMBINATION OF OBJECTIVE AND SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS. EXAMS WILL COVER MATERIAL FROM THE TEXT, LECTURE, AND HANDOUTS. A STUDENT THAT IS BEHIND ON HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO TAKE THE EXAM UNTIL ALL MAKEUP WORK IS COMPLETED. THE FINAL EXAM WILL BE COMPREHENSIVE. IF A STUDENT MISSES AN EXAM, A MAKEUP IS NOT GUARANTEED AND MAY BE TAKEN AT THE DISCRETION OF THE PROFESSOR.

B. ASSIGNMENTS/CLASS PARTICIPATION PERIODICALLY THERE WILL BE WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS AND QUIZZES, BOTH INCLASS AND TAKE HOME. LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL RESULT IN POINTS BEING DEDUCTED FROM THE TOTAL GRADE. THE ASSIGNMENTS WILL VARY IN POINT VALUE(INCLUDES PASS/FAIL). CLASS PARTICIPATION IS REQUIRED FROM ALL STUDENTS TO INCLUDE DISCUSSION OF CLASS CONCEPTS AND ASSIGNED GROUP ACTIVITIES(COOPERATIVE LEARNING). FAILURE TO COMPLETE ALL ASSIGNMENTS WILL RESULT IN A F FOR THE SEMESTER.

C. ATTENDANCE/ABSENCES/WITHDRAWAL EACH STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO ARRIVE TO CLASS ON TIME TO MINIMIZE DISRUPTIONS. ANY STUDENT WHO IS ABSENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DETERMINING IF ANY CLASS WORK WAS ASSIGNED DURING THEIR ABSENCE. ANY STUDENT WHO WILL MISS CLASS/CLASS WORK FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME MUST ADVISE THE PROFESSOR. IF A STUDENT DECIDES TO DROP THE CLASS OR WITHDRAW THE PROFESSOR MUST BE ADVISED IN PERSON OR IN WRITING. ANY STUDENT WITH EXCESSIVE ABSENCES WILL BE DROPPED FROM THE COURSE.

Each student will be required to make an oral presentation on a topic approved by the professor . Specific details will be provided in writing by the professor after the first exam. E.
