NEWSLETTER May 2012 R We have a new Secretary Sri Khanapur Krishna Rao tendered his resignation as secretary of the Association on account of his going abroad for seven months to Canada and the USA. This was to make way for new secretary to be selected / elected. The resignation was accepted in the last MC meeting. A suitable acceptance letter with appreciation for the excellent work done has been sent to him. Several members including Sri Mital, Sri PVVG K Murthy, Sri Chary, Dr Vyasamoorthy and others spoke in appreciation of achievements of Sri Krishna Rao. Sri IVLN Chary was coopted as a member of MC . Subsequently, he has been unanimously chosen as the Secretary. Sri Chary is a long standing member of AOSC-H. Despite having been a Vice President in our Association earlier, he readily accepted to serve as secretary till Sri Krishna Rao returns. Let us welcome Chary garu with folded hands. He is intelligent, self-motivated, computer savvy, dynamic and also mobile. What else do we need? Glaucoma screening test Glaucoma refers to a group of eye conditions that lead to damage to the optic nerve. This nerve carries visual information from the eye to the brain. In most cases, damage to the optic nerve is due to increased pressure in the eye, also known as intraocular pressure (IOP). Tanvi Eye Centre, Mahendra Hills is extending help to senior Citizens for testing the eyes for this condition for a nominal charge of only Rs. 100/- The tests are scheduled for 3rd Sunday of June 2012. Directory of Concessions from Healthcare providers We have decided to revise and update our earlier publication on this subject. There are a good number of Chemists, diagnostics and testing laboratories, doctors and hospitals ready to offer special discounts to senior citizens in their products and services. The info in our booklet has become obsolete. We plan to approach as many institutions or persons as possible and compile a good directory. To start with a covering letter addressed to concerned persons / institutions has been prepared along with a FORM to be signed by the concession-giving organisation. We request our members to collect these forms, approach as many doctors and others as they can reach and give us back the forms after filling up. There will be a prize to the member who contributes maximum in this project.

Special Lecture on Investments The much awaited talk on Financial Investment Opportunities for Senior Citizens by UTI came through on 24th April 2012. Mr. Shobhit of UTI was introduced to the audience by Sri IVLN Chary. In his Power Point presentation on "Senior Citizens and financial planning" Sri Shobhit traced the inflation figures over past 30 years and graphically illustrated how it negatively affects ones savings base. He then showed the alternatives available by way of Debt and equity mutual funds. He drew comparative calculations between bank fixed deposits, fixed maturity plans of Mutual fund houses and equity investments, showing thereby that diversification of investments is advantageous to senior citizens. The lecture was followed by a question and answer session which probed various investment avenues in depth. On the whole the members appreciated the lecture as useful. The association is grateful to UTI for providing high tea also.

Our Members felicitated: In the last issue the newsletter we mentioned that our president Dr P Vyasamoorthy was felicitated during a one day meeting in Ibrahimpatnam. There was a seminar where senior citizens, freedom fighters, and NGOs working for disabled persons took part. Smt Sabita Reddy, Minister for Home, Andhra Pradesh was the chief guest. Here is a photo, from the event. On 30th April 2012 APSCCON conducted their Executive Committee Meeting in Nizamabad. Senior Citizens Forum, Nizamabad played the host. A number of our members including Sri RN Mital, Prof Visweswaraiah, Dr P admanabha Vyasamoorthy, Sri V Nageswara Rao were felicitated with a Shawl, Bouquet, Memento etc each. It is heartening to note that more than 120 local members attended the morning open session. Library: New Rules With Sri Ramesh Sarada taking a lot of interest in our library, we are reviving our library. A card based books issue system will soon become operational. Here briefly are the rules. They are very simple to follow.
Every member of AOSC-H desirous of borrowing books from the library shall get a Library card by paying Rs 100/-. This sum is not re-fundable. The Library card can be exchanged for one book. The period of loan is normally one month When the book is returned the card should be taken back. The Member is responsible for all books borrowed using his card. If the card is lost, member has to buy another card at Rs 100/If a book is lost / damaged then member has to compensate the loss: Either the cost of the book the cost of replacing is expected. A member having need to read more than one book at a time may take another (second) card at Rs 100/Non AOSC-H senior citizens can use the library only through our Members cards. When a book is borrowed details are entered in the register and when returned it is rounded off. Members card is retained in the library cup board along with Issue register, so long as a book has been borrowed. Card fee is paid to treasurer. He will give a proper receipt crediting it to Library head in receipt. He will also give serial number like this: o M288-001 where M288 is Membership number & 001 is serial number. o If a second card issued later to the same member, it may be something like: M288-008 (say after a gap of 7 other cards issued to others) Joint Secretary will sign and issue the library card after entering details in a register. The register will contain info on: Card Number, name of member, receipt number, signature of member and remarks. Remarks column may be used to for loss of card, loss of book etc. Snippets: Dr Mukesh gave medical counseling for as many as ten members on last Doctors Day. No new member joined AOSC-H in April 2012 A dry month? We can not do any work on 31st April 2012 Why? Why are we giving phone numbers in BD / WD tables nowadays? To remind and request you to say your greetings!! As water scarcity in Hyderabad is acute, someone suggested installation of WLU Waterless Urinals in public places to save water; A quick comment was: All our public urinals are waterless, any way!! Zohra Sehgal, Grand old lady of Indian Cinema, tuned 100 on 27th April 2012. You may write to us whatever you know about her, by way of remembering / recollecting a great senior citizen.
