Ph.D Title: Modeling and Analysis of Particle Trajectories in a Common Enclosure Gas Insulated Busduct (GIB) with Electromagnetic Field effect and Epoxy Coated Electrodes Description: Gas insulated sub-station systems offer a compact, cost-effective, reliable and maintenance-free alternative to the conventional air insulated sub-station systems. Their compact size offers a practical solution to vertically upgrade the existing sub-station and to meet the ever-increasing power demand in developing countries. Compressed Gas Insulated Substations (CGIS) consist basically of a conductor supported on insulators inside an enclosure, which is filled with sulfur hexafluoride gas (SF6). SF6 gas provides phase to ground

insulation so that space required is very much less. The voltage withstands capability of SF6 bus duct is strongly dependent on field perturbations, such as those caused by conductor surface imperfections and by conducting particle contaminants. The contaminants can be produced by abrasion between components during assembly or operations. These particles can either be free to move in the GIS bus or they may stick either to an energized electrode or to an insulator surface. If a metallic particle crosses the gap and comes into contact with the inner electrode or if a metallic particle adheres to the inner conductor, the particle will act as a protrusion on the surface of the electrode. Consequently, voltage required for breakdown of the GIS may be significantly decreased. Several methods have been used to reduce the effect of conducting particles, including particle traps and dielectric coated electrodes. Dielectric coating of a metallic electrode surface affects the particle charge mechanism. Coating the inside surface of Gas Insulated switchgear enclosure with a dielectric film reduces the deleterious effect of electrode surface roughness, impedes the development of metallic particle initiated micro discharges, increases the field required to lift particles, and reduces the charge acquired by particles, all of which help alleviate the adverse effect of contaminating metallic particles on insulation withstand. The performance of particlecontaminated compressed gas systems with dielectric coated electrodes is analyzed. A method based on particle movement is proposed to determine the particle Trajectory in Single Phase Isolated Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) or Gas Insulated Busduct (GIB). In order to determine the movement of a particle in a GIB, an inner radius of 40 mm and outer enclosure radius of 137 mm were considered. Aluminium, Copper and Silver particles of 10 mm length and 0.25 mm radius were considered to be present on the enclosure surface. The motion of the particle was simulated using the charge acquired by the particles, the macroscopic field at the particle site, the drag coefficient, Reynolds number and coefficient of restitution. The distance traveled by the particle, calculated using the appropriate equations, is found to be in good agreement with the published work for a given set of parameters. In order to determine the random behavior of moving particles, the calculation of movement in axial and radial directions was carried out by Monte-Carlo technique. In order to determine the movement of particle in the GIB, an outer enclosure of diameter 500 mm and inner conductors of diameter 64 mm spaced equilaterally were considered. Aluminium, Copper wires and Silver particles of 0.1 mm radius and 10 mm length were considered to be present on enclosure surface. The motion of the particle was simulated using the same method as given above. The distance traveled by the particle, calculated using Cartesian coordinates, for a given set of parameters is presented in this thesis. In order to determine the random behavior of moving particles in three phase common enclosure, the calculation of movement in axial and radial directions was carried out at every time step using rectangular random numbers as in the case of single phase. Typical results for aluminum, copper and silver particles are also described in this thesis. The effect of various parameters in a 3 - Phase Common Enclosure GIB like radii and length of particles, co-efficient of restitution, pressure in the busduct, applied voltage and inner conductor radius has been examined and presented. The computation of movement has been carried out on coated system in both single-phase isolated conductor and three-phase common enclosure system. Various types of voltages e.g. power frequency, lightning/switching impulse superimposed on power frequency, asymmetric, triangular and square wave have been used in the simulation studies. The Effect of Electromagnetic Field and Influence of Unbalanced Voltages on the particle movement in a three-phase common enclosure Gas Insulated bus duct is carried out and the results are presented and analyzed. Conclusions have been drawn on the particle movement for various types of particles based on parametric variations.
