AALAS meeting Oct 2011 Swine anesthesia (Swindel) 1) Pre-med with Acepromazine prior to induction with Ketamine he thinks

can prevent malignant hyperthermia. 2) He uses a Bair hugger to keep them warm post-op but if you leave it on once they start paddling with their feet as they wake up they will tear it up. 3) He thinks Fentanyl does not reach good blood levels in the pig. Some breed are very sensitive and you may overdose. Buprenorphine patches may work he has not had much of a chance to use them but they exist apparently. 4) His analgesia protocol for pigs is: a. Buprenorphine 0.1 mg/kg SC BID b. Carprofen 2.3 mg/kg BID or SID c. Meloxicam 0.4 mg/kg SID 5) In his opinion it is almost impossible to overdose a pig with inhalant anesthesia. He told a story of a fire alarm going off during surgery so he told his tech to turn the gas up to 5 and when they got back in the room 30-45 minutes later the pig was fine.?? 6) He sticks a scale on the floor of a transport cart and trains the pigs to go on it with food right out of their pens to get quick and easy weights. 7) Pigs are highly sensitive to heparine.

The three Rs 1) Reduction 2) Refinement 3) Replacement Halsteads Principles 1) Gentle handling of tissue. 2) Strict aseptic technique during preparation and surgery. 3) Sharp anatomic dissection of tissues. 4) Careful hemostasis to improve conditions for the procedure and limit infection and dead space. 5) Obliteration of dead space and adequate removal of material. 6) Avoidance of tension Some scholars also include: 7) Importance of rest postoperatively.

Ruminant anesthesia 1) Equine uterine lavage catheter (Bivona) placed in the rumen with the cuff inflated which acts like a bubble floating to the surface of the rumen contents to off gas. She was involved with cardiac surgeons so bloating put a lot of pressure on the abdomen and thorax which she couldnt have for those specific surgeries. No mention of the rumen contents still drained out around the Bivona or not. 2) If you must single house sheep mirrors on the walls give them the feeling they are in a herd lowering stress. 3) In cardiac surgery she utilizes anti-coagulant drugs at a dose just under toxic (aspirin, Plavix orally but not likely to have effect because of the rumen, heparine, protamine, warfarin) 4) She recommends a 1-2 week transition period from hay to pellets if certified feed is required using things such as sweet feed grain, bananas, honey, to entice their interest. 5) 48 hour fast of solids and 12 hour fast of water pre-op. Advanced Rodent SX 1) Giving SC IV fluids to rodents pre-op results in better survivability. 2) Nose cone with a diaphragm results in the least gas escaping from the animal. 3) They use press and seal sandwich bags to cover the rodents. They are sterilizing the plastic with ethylene oxide gas sterilizer. 4) IP propofol is an option for short procedures without gas anesthesia. 5) 3 hr fast prior to surgery had no changes so she suggested maybe longer though has not done. 6) She was very opposed to using needles to pin rodents down during surgery. 7) Not a fan of alcohol for sterilization. May take up to 24-30hrs. Prefers a hot bead sterilizer. 8)
