The Value of Homework

Homework is helpful to students because it increases their understanding of what they are studying and it strengthens their abilities in other fo4rms besides education. Even though homework cuts into free time and family time its benefits far outweigh the costs. The importance of homework to students is that it actually increases students academic achievements, (Access Eric). Studies have shown that homework with a direct meaning to a student are the most beneficial. It is argued that educational work should be done at school not at home (Spock). The reason is that pointless worksheets that teachers assign do not help students and only creates frustration and stress (Hammer), but the daily completion of homework not only prepares you for the near future of high (Spock), it also prepares you for the classroom. The costs of homework seem daunting which is why not many people actually enjoy it, even though the completion of homework strengthens students abilities to be successful for further forms of education (Spock). Doing homework increases a persons understanding of what is being taught, but it also provides students with skill that can be applied to other areas outside of education. Without homework students find themselves sheltered beneath a teachers thoughts and ideas, rather than reasoning through it with their own ideas. Mitch Hammer argues that if the worksheet does actually take brain power to complete, students may be unable to get questions answered and receive the help they need. That is the point of

homework, to use brain power to answer a question and not be sheltered by a teacher or a peers idea. A normal school day ends about 3 oclock, but Mitch Hammer argues that too much homework can limit the amount of rest students get. Not enough rest can really have an impact on how muck a student learns. This is untrue if school ends at three and the average students curfew is 11 p.m. that leaves them eight hours to do homework and also extracurricular activities. Time management is a craft that takes a long time to truly master, and homework requires the students to be able to accomplish assignments in the time given, according to Nadia Spock. Hammer argued that homework limits the amount of rest students but with over eight hours to do homework his argument seems to hold no water. With homework students learn the importance of time managements which would make lifes tasks easier to manage. No student enjoys homework, and everyone from parents to teachers have tried to explain just how important homework is. Lets face it homework sucks, but it is a crucial part of every students path to a brighter future.
