Title of Unit: Regions Title of Lesson: Border, Boundaries, and Belts

1. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson is designed to build on the knowledge of what they already know of regions. Students will become acquainted with borders, boundaries, and belts. 2. Target Population: grade level: 2nd grade skill level: students at all grade levels grouping: whole group discussion, small group discussion and research, independent notes.

3. Objectives: G6.2.1 Define region and provide examples of regions. 4. Procedure: 1. The students will discuss with their groups what they remember about region. 5 min 2. Teacher will have a whole class discussion that reviews and refreshes the class about what a region is. 5 min 3. Teacher will go over borders, boundaries, and belts and define them. Borders are lines to show where the region begins and ends. They separate political regions, such as states or countries. Boundaries are the edge of a region. Boundaries can be natural such as rivers, or artificial such as roads. Belts are regions that have one feature stretching across a broad area. 10 min 4. Students in their groups will each be assigned with a border, boundary, or belt. The fourth member in the group with help whichever student needs it. They will each research it using the books given or going on the computer. They must come up with an example that has what they were assigned to. 20 min 5. After students are finished each member of the group will present to the class what they example they found that corresponded to border, boundary, or belt. Students must record these findings in their notebook and list each example of border, boundary, and belt that was presented. 10 min 6. Assessment: An informal assessment is to collect each journal to make sure that they were paying attention during the presentations and know which ones have a border, boundary, or belt. Also I will be walking around making sure the students are on task as they are researching. 7. Reflection:

What skills do students need in order to be successful with this lesson? - Students will need to work as a group and be able to do research using books and computers to find what they are looking for. How will you follow up or extend this lesson?

- To follow up this lesson by having students learn about how regions are used. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? - I will work with them as a group and give them a different assignment while the other students are researching. The assignment will have the students reading more extensively about the three bs and finding examples of them. Where do you anticipate having problems with this lesson?
