Supported through a grant from Guys Trust, in 2012
MantaWatch will award one internship to a deserving and
academically gifted student in felds related to marine
science.
The successful candidate will join MantaWatch for four
weeks

, working at a feld site in Indonesia under the
close supervision of the Research Director. They will
receive an introduction to manta ray and elasmobranch
ecology, and training in monitoring and scientifc diving
techniques. Working alongside MantaWatch staf and
members, they will gain a deeper understanding of
standard feld procedures, experimental design, sampling
protocols, environmental monitoring techniques, scientifc
diving operations, and the role of citizen science in
conservation management. The successful candidate
will play an important role within the team, while gaining
valuable experience of managing and analyzing large
datasets generated by MantaWatch members around
the world. He/she will have an opportunity to contribute
to the communication of research fndings, including the
preparation of scientifc papers.
This internship ofers an opportunity to work with an
international research and conservation organization,
and to interact with professional marine scientists, while
gaining valuable practical experience to support graduate
studies in marine science.

Supported through a grant from Guys Trust, the Guy
Joseph MantaWatch Award covers:
Living stipend up to IDR 3,000,000;
Accommodation at the feld site;
Diving equipment, survey materials and other feld
costs if required; and
Domestic fights and travel if required.
The successful candidate will require access to a laptop
computer during the internship.

requirements
Applicants should:
Be enrolled in a degree program at a graduate school
in Indonesia both at the time of application and during
the internship.
Be studying towards a degree in marine/coastal
environmental sciences, fsheries science, marine/
coastal resource management, or a related discipline.
Be at least 20 years of age.
Possess a high level of written and spoken English
profciency.
Be computer-literate in standard software applications,
including Microsoft Ofce applications.
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact
with individuals of diferent cultural backgrounds and
beliefs.
Be willing to travel and work in remote locations with
basic amenities.
Possess strong interpersonal communication and
networking skills, and be energetic, engaging, social
and articulate.
Possess, or be able to obtain, DAN (Divers Alert
Network) insurance or similar, a recent certifcation
of ftness to dive issued by a medical professional,
and basic open water SCUBA certifcation issued by a
recognized certifying agency (e.g., PADI).

passion for exploration and
thirst for knowledge drove
him to pursue his dreams and
ambitions around the world,
from the UK to Indonesia.
On October 14, 2011, aged
25, Guy was killed in a tragic
paragliding accident. The Guy Joseph MantaWatch
Award is a memorial to Guys spirit of discovery and
love for the ocean. The Award aims to support young
Indonesian marine professionals to achieve their
academic and professional ambitions.

developing countries.
