PRESIDENTSMESSAGE Stan Baker, our esteemed Treasurer, has turned over the duties of handling the money (little as it is) to Lyn Rowell, who also puts together this newsletter. My thanks to Stan for all the hard work he did as treasurer, collecting membership dues (especially difficult when it came to my dues-you can ask Stan why!), paying bills, etc. Mostly Stan kept the books in order and we have enough money to avoid fundraisers (I dont know how well selling ostomy supplies at the Giant next to the Scouts selling popcorn would do!). Lyn Rowell will continue the job of writing the newsletter as well as the new job as Treasurer. That means Lyn will have to get two things out of me; the Presidents Message to her on time AND my dues. Seriously, Thanks to Stan and Lyn for the work they have done and continue to do. Without them our Association wouldnt continue. Next time you see Stan or Lyn, thank them.

ILEOSTOMY B12 SHOTS VERSUS B12 TABLETS via Ostomy Toronto, Ostomatic News, Dallas & Snohomish County Ostomy

Question: Is there a difference between B12 shots given by the doctor and the B12 in tablet form? Answer: No..but the B12 absorption is critically dependent on the proper stomach acidity and an intrinsic factor. This is a substance secreted by the stomach which binds B12 to the intestinal wall, preparing it for transport into the bloodstream. In a few individuals, and particularly ileostomates, the intrinsic factor is not produced in sufficient amount for B12 to be absorbed. In those individuals, injections of B12 is required to provide what the body needs. Fortunately, most of us can absorb the B12 in the B complex, or its supplements. Folate and B12 do the same good deed for red blood cells that iron does, but doesnt get nearly as much credit. Major sources of foliates are beets, liver, orange juice and romaine lettuce. For B12, chicken, cottage cheese, eggs, lamb, tuna and yogurt. If a large amount of the last portion of the small intestine (terminal ileum) is removed, or if your system does not produce enough of the intrinsic factor as stated above, you will require B12. This deficiency may not show up for several years. Your body can store B12 for about three years and then you start to become deficient in that vitamin. It may be a good idea to get this checked by your physician. ER PRO ADVISES THE USE OF ID BRACELETS OR NECKLACES Via Snohomish County Ostomy Wallet cards containing emergency medical information may seem like a good idea to people with chronic medical conditions, but they can be useless, say medical professionals, in the very situations they are designed for, that is because people dont always carry wallets or purses says Charlotte Yeh, MD and Chief of Emergency

Medicine at the New England Medical Center in Boston. And even when they do, those items often fail to follow accident victims to emergency departments. An even bigger reason for probably failure of wallet/purse card-based systems is that paramedics are generally discouraged from searching wallets and purses. Paramedics are trained to respond first to the medical emergency at hand, not to waste time looking for ID says Angela Mendoza of California Emergency Medical Services Authority. In most states, finding ID can be delayed because another team member or a police officer has to be present when a wallet or purse is searched. Body worn ID, such as the emblems or pendants Medic Alert members wear, are still the safety choice they say. Emergency management officials and physicians say car based systems are not likely to help if you have a medical condition that must be quickly identified in an emergency. The safest, most reliable way to communicate medical emergency information is through bodyworn ID such as bracelets or necklaces, because they are what EMTs are trained to look for.

The pessimist may be right in the long run, but the optimist has a better time during the trip.

TEN HEALTH MISTAKES THAT EVEN SMART PEOPLE OCCASIONALLY MAKE

Via ACSMs Health & Fitness Journal, Phoenix Facts, & GB News Review

wash your hands after youve used the rest room and before you prepare or eat food. 6. THEY DONT EAT BREAKFAST. Research shows that learning, decision making, and memory can be impaired when you restrict your food intake. Furthermore, if you miss breakfast, you may jump start your appetite in such a way that you overeat during the day. 7. THEY DONT GET ENOUGH CALCIUM IN THEIR DIET. Your bones are approximately 25% calcium by weight, an amount that represents about 99% of your bodys calcium reserves. Accordingly, if you dont consume enough calcium, you can suffer from a reduced level of bone density, which can result in fracture. The best dietary sources of calcium are low-fat or non-dairy products and dark green vegetables. 8. THEY ARE TOO BUSY TO RELAX. Making time to relax is a positive step you can take to reduce your level of stress and improve your health. Studies show that as your level of stress grows, you become increasingly susceptible to physical illness and mental and emotional problems. Relaxing is an effective way to control your level of stress. 9. THEY DONT WEAR THEIR SEAT BELTS. Wearing lap and shoulder belts while traveling in a car can substantially lower your risk of being injured in the event of an accident. For example studies show that a passenger who is ejected during an accident, is more than five times likely to suffer a serious injury or die than an individual who remains strapped inside the vehicle. 10. THEY DONT KNOW THE MEDICAL HISTORY FOR THEIR RELATIVES. Knowing your familys medical history and responding in an appropriate proactive way can substantially help reduce your risk of developing serious diseases. For example, if your family medical history indicates that you are at heightened risk for a particular disorder, you can pursue early detection screening and prevention strategies for that disease.

1. THEY DONT DRINK ENOUGH WATER ON A DAILY BASIS. You should consume at least eight glasses of liquids (beer and diet soda dont count because they act as diuretics) every day to replenish what you lose through urine, bowel movements, sweat, and the moisture you expel into the atmosphere when you breathe out. If you exercise, you should drink even more water. 2. THEY HAVENT HAD A PHYSICAL RECENTLY A regular checkup gives you your best opportunity to detect certain potentially deadly illnesses (from cancer to heart disease) early. Although a complete annual physical exam is no longer considered necessary for everyone, you should your physician for a checkup as often as he/she recommends. Furthermore, some screening procedures (e.g. protein specific antigen tests or mammograms) should be scheduled on a regular basis. 3. THEY DONT GET ENOUGH SLEEP. People who skimp on sleep have been found to suffer from a variety of impairments, including daytime fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, diminished reaction time, and heightened mortality rate. 4. THEY ATTEMPT TO EXERCISE THROUGH PAIN. Pain is the bodys signal that something is seriously amiss. Unlike discomfort, when you experience pain, you must stop exercising and address the cause of the pain. Attempting to work through pain will subject you to the very real possibility of either aggravating your existing condition or suffering an injury. 5. THEY DONT WASH THEIR HANDS DURING THE DAY. Good hygiene helps to prevent infections and the transmission of germs. At a minimum, you should always
