Final Examination Review Problems

Spring, 2012

You should attempt the problems below before coming to class for the lab 12/review session (April 16 April 21). In fact, your instructor may ask you to solve the problems on the board during the review session. There is no substitute for your diligence and participation in this process. If you do nothing but watch someone else solve the problems, you will not learn much from the review. If you at least seriously attempt the problems, you will learn something. The best way to study is to review all labs and quizzes. Try to solve the problems below under exam conditions. If you cannot solve all the problems without help, you are not ready for the final. A sheet of fundamental equations will be provided at the final examination. As you know, one problem on the final examination concerns graphical analysis of data. Here are some equations for you to practice putting into the proper form to make a straight-line graph. For each equation, show how to rewrite the equation to make a straight-line graph of some function of y versus some function of x. Identify the slope and the vertical intercept. EXAMPLE: y2 - a = bx(1/2); Rewrite as y2 = a + bx(1/2). Plot y2 on the vertical axis and x(1/2) on the horizontal axis. The slope is then b and the vertical intercept is a. Review the introduction in the PHYS 1101 manual for help. TRY THESE: (1) y = [c + dx(1/3)]2; (2) y = ae(kx) (3) y= kxn (determine k and n), (4) (y2 + b)(1/2) = ax, and y = a[1 bx(3/4)]

1. To study the effect of wind resistance, a student mounted a sail on one of the dynamics carts and measured the position versus time by using a falling mass to pull the cart along the track. The data obtained are shown below. x (cm) t (s) 7.15 0.50 9.90 1.00 13.20 1.50 17.35 2.00 21.75 2.50 27.00 3.00

(a) If the relationship between the carts position and time were known to be x(t) = xo[1 + kt(3/2)], construct a straight-line graph of the appropriate variables and use the graph to determine the values for xo and k. Include units. (b) At what time is the cart located at 18.7 cm? (c) Where will be cart be at 4.6 seconds? Please show all work on the graph. 2. Using the same force table that you used, a student was given two forces and asked to find a single force that would produce equilibrium with the two forces. The two forces were given by providing one of the components and the angle the force made with the positive x axis. The two forces were as follows: Force 1: Fx = -2.7 N; = 220 degrees Force 2: Fy = 3.2 N; = 60 degrees (a) For each force, calculate the magnitude of the force and the mass required to produce it. (b) Calculate the mass and its angle of application to produce equilibrium with these two forces. Please specify your angle as counterclockwise positive with respect to the positive x axis. 3. A very light spring is 10.0 long with no mass attached to it. When 50.0 grams are added to it, its length increases to 11.25 cm. Another 100.0-g mass is added to the and it is set into oscillation. How much time is required for 100 complete oscillations? 4. The coordinate system and clusters of points obtained during the experiment to study two-dimensional collisions are shown in the

diagram. All labeling is the same as used in the manual, but the drawing is not to scale. (a) Let the projectile's mass be 7.5 g, the target's mass be 5.0 g, = 55o, = 58.4o, Rt = 32.9 cm, and Rp = 22.8 cm and find the distance Ro. (b) If the marbles collided 60.0 cm above the floor, find the horizontal speed of the projectile when it collided with the target. 5. In an experiment using an inclined track with a dynamics cart, the computer failed, and the student had to record the distance the cart traveled in a certain time interval. If the cart traveled 35.0 cm in 1.5 s, find its acceleration and the tension in the string connecting the cart to the accelerating (hanging) 50g mass.
