Introduction: Ernest Hemingway has been one of the most original and inspiring authors of the 20th century,

hes to be considered a genius. His work has inspired many others to start in the art of writing literature; one of these is Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez. One of Hemingways most amazing works is the book of short stories Men Without Woman published in 1926. In this book, the author remarks the importance of women in mens life, and the role that is carried by women in every days life and decisions that these must take and their consequences. Hills like White Elephants is one of the short stories in this book, this story is about how difficult can be the fact of having an abortion for a woman, and pressure made by men to have this kind of operation done. Brief Biography: Ernest Hemingway1 (1899-1961), born in Oak Park, Illinois, started his career as a writer in a newspaper office in Kansas City at the age of seventeen. After the United States entered the First World War, he joined a volunteer ambulance unit in the Italian army. Serving at the front, he was wounded, was decorated by the Italian Government, and spent considerable time in hospitals. After his return to the United States, he became a reporter for Canadian and American newspapers and was soon sent back to Europe to cover such events as the Greek Revolution. During the twenties, Hemingway became a member of the group of expatriate Americans in Paris, which he described in his first important work, The Sun Also Rises (1926).. Hemingway - himself a great sportsman - liked to portray soldiers, hunters, bullfighters - tough, at times primitive people whose courage and honesty are set against the brutal ways of modern society, and who in this confrontation lose hope and faith. His straightforward prose, his spare dialogue, and his predilection for understatement are particularly effective in his short stories, some of which are collected in Men Without Women (1927). Hemingway died in Idaho in 1961.

Plot: Basically, the whole story is about, how a men and a young lady, whos apparently his lover, are talking about abortion; while theyre waiting for a train in the train stations bar where theyre drinking beer and trying some other new drinks. Also they talk about how happy they were (before the girl was pregnant) and how happy they could be (after abortion), thing that seems to cause frictions between them. Its important to say that they never mention de word abortion or baby, or something related to parenthood.

Graphic Organizer:

Setting:

The story takes place in a train stations bar in Spain, approximately in the region of El Ebro.

Characters: Jig : she is a young woman, she isnt married to the man shes with, shes pregnant. We can infer that she feels insecure and that shes afraid of losing the mans love. Man: hes Jigs couple, he wants her to have the operation done, and like that hed be free of the responsibility of having a child. Hes persuasive, and manipulative. Opinion: I liked this story a lot, because Hemingway knew how to symbolize each of the things and fears of the characters, without mentioning what they were really afraid of. He was able to create a complete story without giving an extended background of the characters experiences. Alternative Ending:

The girl stood up from the chair and she knew she must do what had to be done. With tears in her eyes, she looked at the man, paying for all, and ready to leave. She looked at the white big hills through the window, and took her stuff. She didnt turn back, until she was save at home. Photos:
