Indian Education System- An Advantage or Disadvantage

India is a promised land of scholars and saints. There has been no dearth of knowledge in India since time immemorial. Indian civilization has been blessed with priceless knowledge of Vedas and Puranas. Coming all along with these Holy Scriptures, till the modern age of science and technology, India can be found nowhere legging behind. Nevertheless we need not deny the fact that, India still possesses some quarters where a bud of education is still to sprout. As India witnesses tremendous upheavals in Indian economy- a segment ascending, while another suffers heavy descend- Education system is also building similar pandemonium. Every year India produces thousands of brilliant assets from IITs, IISc, IIMs, AIMS, BITS and ISB, who glows in every sphere of modern world. Concurrently, India still owns people in large numbers who are debarred of the basic education. Hence, in spite of its triumph in major areas, Indian Education System is tainted wit a few blemishes. At the dawn of Modern India, she has received privileged initiatives by scholars like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Dayanand Saraswati to spread education to many quarters of Indian population- big or small. British Government also took measures in spreading education among Indian masses by establishing various schools and colleges. No doubt, this was a part of their ruling policy but has been one of the promising act to which India will always comply with. The subjects like Arithmetic, Theology, Law, Astronomy, Metaphysics, ethics, Medical Science, Religion etc. were primarily incorporated in the syllabuses. After Independence state Governments held responsibility for education, whereupon in 1976, the state and the centre took joint responsibility through a constitutional amendment. The most importance turn in Indian Education Commission came with Kothary Commission of 1964, under the supervision of Dr. P.S. Kothary, the then Chairman of University Grants Commission. There has been stunning operations undertaken by Education Commission since 1976 till the Sharba Shiksha Abhijan of contemporary system. Education has been made a fundamental right of all the children aged 6-10 years by the 86th Amendment of the Indian Constitution. A huge lot of countrys capital goes for elementary education in the attempt to provide free education to children below 14 years. Apart from this, special reservations are made in imparting education to women, members belonging to schedule caste and schedule tribe, other backward classes and physically maimed ones. There is reservation of seats for such students along with special scholarships for better pursuing of higher education in whatsoever field. There I even provision for Distance Education for the people who could not complete their formal education under various circumstances. The resulting effect is the 64.8% of literacy as recorded in 2001. In all, there is all positive means undertaken by Central and State Government to increase literary rate and shine up India with new buds of education. Nevertheless, there is not a single body free of its demerits. In spite of all government measures, Education System still retains host of demerits and proves to

be a disadvantage for many educated Indians. Not to talk of its failure to educate whole India, there are demolishes in the system itself. The basic problem is its Rote Learning system. Students only with high percentage of marks receive preference in all fields and there are very limited examinations to calculate the merits of students. It seem to be great disadvantage for many good students whose fate alters with just one mishap in one particular examination. The evaluation system of Indian Education remains the major disadvantage in this regard. The Indian education system is also legging behind in providing quality education to many students to cope up with the present changing and challenging universe. Except, the metropolitan cities, most of the Indian cities are inadequate enough to provide vocation for the students even with high up degrees. Moreover most institutions in such small cities do have enough courses to provide job oriented courses Therefore there is high influx of students towards those metros from small cities. In metropolitan areas there is now mushrooming of many private institutions which charged up huge sum of money for various job oriented courses. Most of the middle class families find it very hard to meet their demands allowing their wards to go for general courses which are left with very limited demand in present world. Therefore, it is now high time for the government to take some measures to do away with all such problems. The reservation law in various fields has been assessed as another snag in Indian Education System. The reservation for caste, tribe, religion, language in respective states proves to be a hindrance for many promising students to acquire seats in some respective institutions. Had there been enrollment according to merit basis, there may have not been curtailment of many shinning careers. In a Third World country like India, where a huge population lives under poverty line, there very limited scope for poor students to receive any scholarship. Where there are reservations for improvement of tribes, majority of tribes do not get the chance to offer. Had there been provisions for betterment of such tribal and backward areas, India could have received more talents from such areas. Nonetheless, it would be improper to blame the system, where people in charge of the system and whole processing have garbed in corruption. Government is spending crores of rupees for the system; but instead of fulfilling the public needs, the mediators are satisfying their own needs. There is corruption even in buying and selling of medical and engineering seats. But, Indian students are shinning in all fields in and abroad, defying all the corruption and defects of education system. There is disadvantage in every field and blockage for every growing thing. It is the sole responsibility of the budding buds of future India to dispense with every flaw system has, to create an India, which scholars have envisioned long ago. Also the government of India along with every responsible citizen of India should offer their service towards the betterment of education in India. Science and technology, economics, business, law, hospitality, fashion etc. are the major areas where students can plane to make their careers in. Still, every branch of study needs students with proper dedication. Hence, parents and teachers should strive hard from the very beginning to inculcate this faculty in their wards. It would be a joint venture of Indian population to Educate India full fledgedly.
