GENERAL MODULE INFORMATION Title Mechanics of Materials and Machines I 2. VENUE Day/Time Tuesday: 13.00 16.00 Wednesday: 13.00 15.00 3. AIM This module is intended for 1 year engineering students. It introduces to students the concepts of stresses and strain; shearing force and bending as well as torsion and deflection of different structural elements. 4. OUTLINE SYLLABUS Applied Mechanics Concepts. Direct Stress and Strain. Frameworks. Shear and Torsion. Shear Force and Bending Moment. Bending of Beams. Simple Harmonic Motion. Velocity & acceleration Diagrams. Balancing. Crank Effort Diagrams. Belt Drives, Cams & Gears. 5. LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of this module, the students should be able to: Understand and solve simple problems involving stresses and strain in two and three dimensions; Apply sound analytical techniques and logical procedures in the solution of engineering problems. 6. 11. PRACTICAL CLASSES Six practical sessions will be held: 1. Compression of Springs 2. Polygon of Concurrent Forces 3. Wall Jib Crane 4. Shear Force in beams 5. Rope Belt Friction 6. Mass-Spring Systems Practical Classes will be held in the Structural Mechanics Lab (Level I, Textile Building). Each group will consist of FOUR students. Students are required to keep detailed record of each practical work and to submit hand-written reports. Further information will be provided during lab classes. 13. ASSESSMENT Continuous Assessment Weightage: 30% Weighting (%) Practical(s) 30 Assignments 20 Tests ( 2) 50 Total Marks: 100 14. INDUSTRY SEMINAR The MPEDept will be organising Industry Seminars: Attendance to those relevant to the MECH 1001 module is mandatory. Contents of the relevant seminars are examinable. Written Examination Weightage: 70%
