Students and Faculty taking part in Convocation Ceremony wear academic regalia to the event. The regalia consists of a gown made of black cloth and a cap or mortarboard. These articles of clothing are relics with medieval roots to the modern university. The third part of the attire, the hood, is part of the British academic tradition which dates back to the 13 th century and is draped loosely over the shoulders of the Graduate by the Chancellor. The hood is a means of distinguishing the degrees of graduates from those of other Universities. During the graduation procession at Mount Allison, each Faculty member wears the academic regalia of the University where they earned their degree. Graduating students of Mount Allison wear black gowns, and caps and the coloured silk lined hood of their degree .

A Graduating student may rent the full Academic apparel at the Bookstore from September to April, if they are wanting photographs.

During Convocation weekend, the gowns are available from the Gown Room in the multipurpose room, (room 130) Wallace McCain Student Centre. Although we do our best to ensure a variety of sizes, we recommend that you do not wait until the last minute to rent your gown, as sizes may not be available. For your convenience, gown room will be open Friday, May 119am to 4pm Saturday, May 12....noon to 4pm Sunday, May 13...noon to 4pm Monday, May 14.....8am to 6pm
A rental fee of $40 is required at the time of the rental. $20 will be refunded upon return of the cap, gown, and hood. You will also need to return your mail key at that time or pay a fee of $10 if you do not have your key, or require summer mail service. We recommend that you check your mail box before you come to rent your academic regalia. Academic apparel must be returned to Multi Purpose Room in the Wallace McCain Student Centre after the ceremony or, at the latest, Friday May 18, 2012 to the Bookstore. After this date, no refund will be possible.
