HIV / AIDS

The Idea To create a national network of organizations, corporations and students working on the issue. To foster understanding of the issue and its social, economic and political linkages in the world amongst the youth. To be an effective channel whereby informed youth can advocate their opinions. To foster community involvement around the issue amongst all stakeholders. To be a platform for corporations and NGOs to highlight their best case practices to a global audience.

The Issue
Some 25 years into the HIV epidemic, the protection of human rights remains critical to a successful response to AIDS. Since the beginning of the epidemic, it has been recognized that: - HIV-related stigma and discrimination are major obstacles to scaling up HIV prevention, care and treatment. - Protection of human rights, both of those vulnerable to infection and those already infected. - Supportive frameworks of policy and law. As the epidemic has progressed, it has also become increasingly clear that: - National and local responses will not work without the full engagement and participation of those affected by HIV. - The human rights of women, young people and children must be protected if they are to avoid infection and withstand the impact of HIV. - The human rights of marginalized groups, including those engaging in activities deemed immoral or illegal, must also be respected for the response to HIV to be effective. Furthermore, HIV stigma and discrimination are often entangled with the discrimination attached to being a woman, being poor, having a different sexual orientation, engaging in sex work or drug use, and being in prison. These realities contribute to the rising number of infections each year, with women, young people and marginalized groups getting infected at the fastest rates and bearing the worst impact of AIDS. When human rights principles guide the process by which local and national responses are implemented the results are responses tailored to the needs and realities of those affected. Such principles include non-discrimination, participation, inclusion, transparency and accountability.

I was able to think about my values. I found answers to several questions, which I had before coming to India. I'm sure that I am more flexible. I know now that I can motivate people to help them find their way. I feel different now than before my stay in India and I am surer about my goals in life and about my way to make decisions. India was a great experience! My learning about the issue of HIV was immense and in depth. Now I am more than motivated to work for the cause, back home in Germany
