Book Talk Lesson Plan

Brianna Morgan 4/2/12 Mystery Book Talk Grade Level: 6th grade Length of Lesson: 10 Minutes Purpose: The purpose of this book talk lesson is to make the students aware of some of the mystery books in the library and share some new mystery titles with students. By sharing some titles, hopefully some students will find something they can identify with and will be interested in reading this genre and similar books. Learning Outcomes: students will: a) Know what a book trailer is and how to find them. b) Know how to distinguish, and where to locate mystery books in the library. Illinois Learning Standard(s) Addressed: GOAL 1: Read with understanding and fluency 1.C.3.d: summarize and make generalizations from content and relate them to the purpose of the material. GOAL 2: Read and understand literature representative of various societies, eras and ideas. 2.A.3b: Describe how the development of theme, character, plot, and setting contribute to the overall impact of a piece of literature. 2.B.3a: Respond to literary material from personal, creative and critical points of view. GOAL 4: Listen and speak effectively in a variety of situations. 4.A.3a : Demonstrate ways (ask probing questions, provide feedback to a speaker, summarize and paraphrase complex spoken messages) that listening attentively can improve comprehension. Common Core Standard(s) Addressed: RL.6.2: Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details, provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments. SL.6.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grade 6 topics, texts and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly. Standard(s) for 21st Century Learner: Skill #1 Inquire, think critically and gain knowledge 1.1 Skills 1.1.6 Read, view and listen for information presented in any format in order to make inference and gather meaning. 1.2 Dispositions in Action

Skill #4- Persue personal and Aesthetic Growth 4.1.1-Read, view, and listen for pleasure and personal growth 4.4.1-Identify own areas of interest Materials: Needed by staff: Needed by students: books for talk, The Danger Box, 39 Clues, Skeloton Creek, Trackers, Wish You Were Dead, Blood On My Hands, Kill You Last, Rotters, Maximillion Book talk trailer, computer, projector Instructional Procedures: Focusing Event: Introduce myself to students. Explain activity and theme for the book talk. Discuss what a book trailer is and the similarities between those and movies previews. Input from you: I am giving an oral book talk on various books about mysteries. I have found book trailers for a few of the titles Im going to share. Guided Practice: The teacher will discuss the purpose for having the book talk. The book talk will give the students an opportunity to have a brief book summary provided to them orally. It will summarize the themes of each book and tell a bit about each character and the role they play in the story. Students will listen carefully to summaries. Closure: Ask students share which book they enjoyed and share thoughts among the group. Check for understanding: Make sure all students are clear about where to find mystery books in the library, and how they would distinguish mystery book among others in the library.
