Date: 5/10/12 PSYCH 1700 Psychology of Human Sexuality Assignment #3 (chart 3,4,5,6) According to the charts, media ties in with an individuals personal relationship along with events / activities of their daily life. More time invested in media opens up our mind to the views, thoughts, and personal choices of others around us as well as across the world. This is made possible because media installs new information without us realizing it at times, keeping in mind that education plays a big part in life, and giving us as viewers/ listeners a new/different way of approaching a similar situation. Media could either suppress our openness to sexual activities, for example masturbation and indulging in oral sex, due to moral values or religious teachings. It could also make one open up with activities performed behind closed doors because thanks to media, for example twitter, we get to see that others do it, therefore decreasing guilt, and making it rather acceptable. The findings in chart # 4 might explain that people that are on twitter might be more open with their personal lives; personal struggles and relationship issues, which all of these can tie into a shorter relationship. People who are non-twitter users might be more private about their relationship status which can lead to a longer relationship due to their commitment to the relationship rather than the social networking site. People on twitter post whether they are in a relationship or not, as opposed to people who are not on social networking sites cannot display their relationship status. The findings in this chart #5 show that people who use twitter might be more likely to spend more time on the computer, which could lead them to different porn sites,

making them more susceptible to masturbation. On a social network people might post provocative pictures of themselves which may also lead people to masturbate. What might explain the findings in chart #6 is that people that practice some religions over others do not believe in masturbation. It might go against what they practice in many different ways. It also shows that women are more likely not to masturbate than men within different religions. Masturbation within some religions might be seen as a sinful thing to do and that is why many might claim they have never masturbated. And lastly, what might explain the findings in chart #3 is that people that are vegetarian may be more open-minded to giving oral sex rather than non-vegetarian people. It is difficult to really place a specific reason on the reason why? this is. There is no right or wrong answer to this question. This is not rigorous research because the researcher is not going around and collecting data. Only the individuals who register on the site are being focused on. Although that method of data collection is simplistic, it is not representative of an entire population. It is also selective, as the source numbers for each chart are different. Another factor could be that Twitter was the only social media site chosen. This is not rigorous research as it seems all the information is being nit-pick. There is no guideline that they are following. They are only choosing certain subject areas and comparing it to one topic. So there is no room or feel for a bigger comparison. Because of this flip flopping of information nothing seems valid. I doubt anyone would think this information is truthful or can do any kind of research base on this. First the information being used is base off peoples online profile. Who is to say the information is correct/true. These profiles where made for people to find dates. So their main goal is to make themself look more appealing and not to be so truthful on any of the subject matters. Second for each category the number of source is different.

Shouldn't the same number of people be used for all the different categories? In addition to the ones that would make the number in the polls look good. Unlike an anonymous survey which you will have a set number of clients or subjects answering a fix number of question that relate to one another. Knowing that the information they will be answering will not be trace back to them unless they choose so. You can get a better understanding and grasp for what the research topic is about. When it comes to the area of sex and relationships not everyone is willing to be open and honest about their personal business. Graph 3 showing that vegetarians enjoy giving oral sex more so than meat eaters may raise some questions. Are vegetarians missing something in their diet that they get through giving oral sex? Do vegetarians just have a more caring and giving nature then meat eaters? Why do men in general enjoy giving oral sex more? Do meat eaters already have enough meat in their diet that they don't need anymore? Graph 6 raises questions based on religion and masturbation. Why in general do women not masturbate as much as men? What influence does each religion have on ones view on masturbation? Why does it seem that Jewish women are the most likely to never have masturbated? Why do Christians and Atheists have the same percentages of men and women who have never masturbated? Does religion affect them?
