Elaboration of comparisons based on the following:


Conventional learning system Teacher-centred Physical presence of instructor and students ( in time and space) is necessary. teaching occurs in real, physical classrooms. Teaching and learning happen synchronously. ODL system Student centred Physical presence of instructor and students (in time and space) is not necessary but there are some face-toface tutor-student meeting. teaching occurs in virtual classrooms except for face-to-face tutorials. Teaching and learning happen both synchronously and asynchronously.

2. It is vital for all students to know that academic dishonesty is not acceptable in academia. Plagiarism is one of the most deplorable forms of academic dishonesty. (a) Explain what plagiarism is. (4 marks)

(b) Give 4 examples of plagiarism committed by students. ( 8 marks) (c) Discuss 4 ways of combating plagiarism amongst students in colleges and universities. ( 8 marks)

a. The act of intentionally or unintentionally using another authors words, ideas or research without giving credit or acknowledgement to the author. b. Not citing the references and sources used in coursework assignments. - Using identical info structures in an authors work without citation and reference. - Paraphrasing and quoting an authors work without citation and reference. - Stating facts and research that are not common knowledge without proper citation and research. c. Establish strict rules and regulations on plagiarism. - Provide clear citation guidelines. - Teach students to check for originality of their own work,e.g. By running their assignments thru Turnitin. - Moderate punishment mark reduction or failure. - Severe punishment suspension or termination of studies.

3. Poh Ling and Anna are classmates. Poh Ling likes to transform facts that she learns into diagrams or illustrations. Anna, on the other hand, prefers oral and written explanations of what she learns. (a) Identify Poh Lings and Saras learning style. Learning Style Visual learner Strategies Finds many facts about topic to be learned. Try to find diagrams, sketches, schematics, photographs, flow charts, or any other visual representation of course material. Get relevant videotapes or CD-ROM related to the course materials. Prepare concept maps by listing key points, enclosing them in boxes or circles, and drawing lines with arrows between concepts to show connections. Highlight important points. Use different coloured highlighter for different main points. Write summaries or outlines of course material in your own words. have group discussions take turns to explain to your classmates.

4a. Helps the learner when he/she does revision. Helps make learning more organized. Helps the learner concentrate on what he/she is learning. Enables one to put ideas in ones own words. Helps one to remember things clearly.

Outline method Dashes are commonly used. points are jotted down in an organized pattern based on space indentation major points are written on the far left and specific points indented to the right. The degree of indentation depends on how important the point is, the more specific the point is, the further to the right is the indentation.

Summary method Notes are written in ones one words A shorter version of the reading material is written according to ones own understanding. Only the essential facts and concepts are written. Annotation method The blank space in the margins is used. Text is underlined , notes and various symbols ( question marks, ticks, crosses, etc) added to show various meanings. Any other suitable method.
