RDM Campus is partner in the Clean Tech Delta network. Clean Tech Delta is a collaboration of trade and industry, education and government to stimulate innovation and clean technology and then implement it. Innovation and clean technology in the Delft-Rotterdam region is creating sustainable solutions which can be applied at both regional and international levels. The situation and conditions of the region are ideal: a port-industrial complex and a densely populated urban environment, with the necessary space and technological potential. Furthermore, the region RotterdamDelft is situated in the heart of the Dutch Delta. Development and implementation of innovations for city water management and delta technology create the Clean Tech Delta, which is an inspiring example for other delta cities in the world. The Clean Tech market sectors are: energy efficiency water and delta technology sustainable energy generation sustainable area development sustainable mobility efficiency of materials

Rotterdam has something that most cities all over the world long for: space. There is more than 1,600 hectares of it, right in the middle of the city (pictured above). The port industries are gradually moving out to Maasvlakte 2 on the coast, creating the space for Stadshavens (the city ports area of Rotterdam) to implement a transformation on an unprecedented scale. New, high quality living and working environments will reinvigorate both city and port. The former RDM site is one of the redevelopment areas of Stadshavens. Within this context RDM Campus is a showcase for reuse of industrial heritage for innovative purposes: education and business development that meets the needs of port and city for smart and sustainable solutions.

innovation anD Co-Creation
RDM Campus wants to be a stimulus for the innovative and creative manufacturing industry in the Rotterdam area, bringing together practice-based research and innovation & entrepreneurship, through company and institutional collaboration. A unique learning and working environment, due to the synergy between business and education and the unique location where this takes place. Researchers and students work together with companies on developing innovative product concepts and on manufacturing these products: from concept to prototype and by using the most modern techniques. On RDM Campus there is crosspollination between education and business through: traineeships, innovation teams and Communities of Practice cooperation within research projects, testing & prototyping sharing facilities (i.e. machines, access to funding) conferences and seminars courses and training facilities for employees from companies (tailor made contract education) RDM Campus Innovation Network: lectures & network meetings

Innovation Dock on RDM Campus is a monumental industrial hall with a surface area of approximately 23,000m, a minimum height of 12 metres and a maximum height of 20 metres. It consists of two sections, the education hall that houses Albeda College and Rotterdam University, and a business hall, where 1 1,500m is available for small innovative companies.

The research centres have a group of professors, PhDs and researchers working in close cooperation with the industry in port and city, students, stakeholders and government. research Centre sustainable solutions rDm is a centre for applied research on the sustainability of energy use, product development, mobility and building. Within Rotterdam University the research centre Sustainable Solutions RDM focuses on sustainable innovations, solutions and strategies that will transform Rotterdam into an energy neutral, climate robust, liveable and attractive delta city. The research centre aims at finding integral, sustainable solutions for the following domains in the Rotterdam region: sustainable and resilient building sustainable mobility and accessibility sustainable energy concepts and product development The Port of Rotterdam, being one of the busiest ports in the world, expects substantial growth in cargo flows, business and traffic in the coming 20 years. Combined with the ambition to be the most efficient, sustainable and safe port in the world, innovation is needed to develop in the desired direction. The research Centre port innovation at Rotterdam University is contributing with dedicated applied research on the following topics: implementation of renewable materials in industrial processes energy efficiency supply chain management strategic maintenance management transition management education and labour

The location of intermediate and higher vocational education under the same roof makes education on RDM Campus special. Albeda College and Rotterdam University work together and with companies on RDM Campus, as well as with technical universities outside the campus such as Delft University of Technology. There is plenty of space on RDM Campus for various activities: applied research, innovation, interaction and experiments. albeda College is a large comprehensive school for intermediate vocational education and adult education in Rotterdam. Here, approximately 25,000 students follow a variety of programmes in 350 fields at 50 locations. On RDM Campus, Albeda College offers education in metallurgy and maintenance. rotterdam university of Applied Sciences is a leading knowledge institute for higher professional education, with 28,000 students preparing for their future career in over 75 study programmes. Rotterdam University offers education in civil, mechanical, car and electrical engineering, industrial product design, building technology, architecture and urban design.

inCubator Dnamo

To stimulate new business and entrepreneurship incubator Dnamo is located at RDM Campus. It is Dnamos mission to empower tomorrows firms in sustainability. Dnamo offers pre-incubation and incubation programmes, training, funding, networks and office space for starting entrepreneurs and young professionals from SMEs.

future mobility ConCept house village
The building sector has gained lots of know-how and experience in sustainability in the past 20 years. However, unlike most other products, such as smart phones and computers, the most expensive product we ever use our home is rarely tested before it is launched on the market. Until recently, the ability to study concepts in a real life situation was not available, but it is now, in Concept House Village. This experimental and demonstration site for smart and reproducible prototype housing is being built near RDM Campus. It is a unique research facility focused on innovations in housing construction in an existing urban area, where new techniques, processes and sustainable behaviour are tested on levels of comfort and performance. In the space of just two months (November 201 to January 2012), the first prototype was built by the 1 Delft University of Technology in cooperation with Rotterdam University, Albeda College and a consortium of building companies. New prototypes will start construction in 2012.

Forward-looking mobility is an important theme for the City of Rotterdam and its port. Sustainable accessibility is required in order to diminish the impact of mobility on the environment. Examples are electrical transport by road or water as an alternative for the pollution caused by diesel engines. Partners include Shell, Spijkstaal, RET, e-Traction, Van Gansewinkel, Eneco and Berezina.

working together on innovation

At RDM Campus, knowledge institutes and companies are working on sustainable technical innovations in innovation teams or communities of practice (CoPs), consisting of lecturers and students from one or more educational programmes and company employees. These teams often include students from various educational backgrounds (multilevel) and are multidisciplinary, including students from different educational fields. From 2009 on over 60 innovation teams and nearly 500 students contributed specifically to a number of projects for companies. One of the most impressive examples is the iconic Floating Pavilion, which illustrates Rotterdams ambition to build on water. It was designed by Delta Sync and built at RDM Campus by a consortium of Public Domain Architects, Dura Vermeer Construction and Rotterdam Public Works. Students from Albeda College and Rotterdam University worked on its design and completion. The Floating Pavillion is the forerunner of future floating communities in Rotterdam, like Aqua Dock, which is now being planned. Sustainable building is one of the priorities in the redevelopment of the city ports of Rotterdam. Experience in this field presents global market opportunities: 75% of all megacities in the world are located in delta regions, all suffering from limited space and confronted by having to address climate change and scarce energy. Floating buildings fit in with the adaptation strategy of the city of Rotterdam.

In ESFA government and business come together for a common purpose: investing in sustainable manufacturing and mobility. Here, unemployed youths have the opportunity to get ready for the real working world in a specially designed practice environment, assembling electrical scooters which will be sold and used in the Rotterdam area. ESFA is also a partner in the Future Mobility research programme on RDM Campus.

proDuCt Design

Rotterdam mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb was the first to use the port access terminal, designed by students of industrial product design at Rotterdam University.

Ampelmann builds ship-based self stabilizing platforms that actively compensate all vessel motions to make offshore access safe, easy and fast. RDM Campus is ideal for them because of the location near water, the large floor space, cranes and the fact that all their important customers are located just around the corner. They have a good cooperation with students who, for example, design and make parts for them.
