4 Year Old Eva In The Fight Of Her Life:

Show Your Support!!!
By: Erin Wilson
ALL, a form of Leukemia, was the diagnosis for the daughter of a fellow Massasoit student. While the 4 year olds cancer is currently in remission, it is still going to be a tough road ahead because she must continue with treatment another 24 months. There are many ways in which you can support her and the rest of the Fox family while they fight this battle. Jennifer Fox of Pembroke is a nursing student here at Massasoit. Her identical twin girls, Gracie and Eva, both go the Massasoit Childrens Center while Jennifer attends her classes. On February 17th, Evangeline Belle was diagnosed with leukemia after being sick and having a low grade fever since early in January. Here is how YOU can help!!! You can send well wishes to Evas care page on the site: carepages. com/carepages/EvaEnchanted If you are able to, you can make monetary donations to the Fox Family at Citizens Bank. Just mention the Elves for Eva Fund. On June 22nd, there is the opportunity to participate or donate to Team Eva Enchanted in The Relay for Life which is connected to The American Cancer Society. The Relay for Life will (Continued on Page 3)

Attention Class of 2012 Graduates: What Do You Really Want?

By: Zahra Alavi
It is easy to neglect that graduation is right just around the corner when the class of 2012 graduates are preoccupied with projects, finals exams, work and extracurricular activities. With all these obligations on our mind, we do not have enough time to drop hints to family and friends about the ideal graduation gift. We all have been in the situation where we hinted for a car to our love ones when in reality we received a sweater. the hassle of spending excruciating hours bookmarking a gift that later you would probably forget about. In an instant you can begin creating a custom list with photos, pricing, and links to purchase all your favorites in a cool, hip, and user-friendly location.

Before and After

By: Ruth Gill
A few months ago I was approached by Dottie, a dear woman who works in the cafeteria on the Brockton campus, and was asked to write an article about her son Darren. In December, right before Christmas, her son Darren (who works alongside his mother in the cafeteria) was in a terrible car accident. He received multiple injuries to various parts of his body and endured not only a lengthy hospital stay, but also rehabilitation at two different places. But, Darren was determined to get better and get back to work. He is such a champion. On Tuesday April 10th, Darren was released from St. Josephs Rehabilitation Center in Brockton. It was a long and difficult journey, but Darren Smith is a fighter. I am sure everyone here at Massasoits Brockton campus will be so happy and proud to see him back at work in the cafeteria with his mother. Darren received a huge Welcome Back when he arrived home and I know (Continued on Page 3) there will be another huge welcome when he returns to work here at Massasoit. Darrens mother Dottie gave me a letter written by Darren for The Student Voice. In it he says, As many of you know that I was seriously injured in an accident in December, before Christmas, taking me many weeks to recover.

After your list is finalized, you can share it via email, or post it on your Facebook and Twitter for family and friends to access. Financial Tips to Our Graduates

On Thursday, April 27, Massasoit Community College hosted the twelfth annual Credit for Life Fair in the Asiaf Field House. Over two hundred fifty Brockton High School seniors were presented with real life scenarios choosing a job with a yearly salary, purchasing transportation, insurance, an apartment, furniture, food, clothing, and luxury items. The students learned a lot that day. If they ended up in the red, which some of them did, theyre fortunate to have another chance in life to plan better. What plans do you have for your money? When you land your first job out of college, be prepared to know how you want your money to work for you. If you dont have a plan for your money, everyone else will! The first tip is to budget - budget everything! Know that buying the $5 coffee or lunch every day, instead of making it at home, adds up. It could be costing you well over $1,000 a year. Imagine what you could do with that money. Track your spending for a month to see where your money goes. Start saving immediately! The best way is a direct deposit to your savings account. Besides if you have an amount automatically deducted from each paycheck, you wont miss it. Theres an expression - pay yourself first! Wise advice Id say. Be sure to pay off your credit cards as soon as possible. We all know that credit cards can get us into trouble quickly. While we need to build up our credit by showing that we can pay off our bills when due, if credit cards balances arent paid off each month, the actual cost for an item can be twice, three or more times the purchase price. This is because of the high interest rates. If youre late, you will be assessed a fee and this could hurt your credit score (scores are between 300 and 830 points; the higher the better). Did you know that employers may use your credit score to judge you? Having a good credit rating can help you rent an apartment and get lower rates on your car insurance. If you do not have the mon2 ey to pay off the purchase when the bill comes in, then you cant afford it. Therefore, dont buy it. Another tip is to start a separate savings account for emergencies. This should be equal to three months income. Yes, I know it can be difficult when you start your career, but having this buffer is important. Again, start by putting some money away each paycheck. Remember, this account is your safety net not your credit cards. Monitor your credit history through the free service of www.annualcreditreport.com. You are eligible to obtain your credit reports from the three major credit agencies Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian. Be aware that there are companies that will charge you for these same reports when you can get them free once a year. Lets not forget that if you borrowed money to pay for your college education, you are obligated to pay back the loan. It was not a gift. You must not let your student loan be delinquent or go into default. If you have any difficulty paying off your loan, immediately contact the lender. Money isnt everything, but we all need it to live. There are many articles on the web and books in libraries on personal finance. It is well worth your investment of time to read these and to learn how to manage AND maximize your money. Good luck!

Another ongoing way to help includes joining mealtrain.com so you can provide a meal for the Fox family. If this is something you would like to do, please call Susan Driscoll, Director of the Massasoit Community College Childrens Center at 508-5889100 ext. 1440 or email her at sdriscoll@massasoit.mass.edu to find out more information. Jennifer would like us to support NeuroblastThis.org by ordering flowers through flowerpowerfundraising.com. She shared news that on March 28th, the family was informed that Evas cancer, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), is in remission. Eva has been able to come home intermittently. However good this news is, there is still a long road ahead with another couple years of treatment. PLEASE support the Fox family as they are part of our little community... our Massasoit Family.

For my boss Jeff, co-workers and friends, and students; who have known me while working at Massasoit in the caf, I want to let you know Im doing well and appreciate the prayers, so many cards, thoughtfulness of you all. I miss seeing everyone and hope to visit soon. These moments has given my mom and myself strength to recover getting back to the caf. Greetings to you all. One does not realize how much some ones friendships can touch someones life as you all have touched mine. Again, thank you for being there when we needed your support, and thanks for the kindness shown to my mom. God Bless, your friend and co-worker Darren Smith. It has been my pleasure to write this article for Dottie and her son Darren. I feel very humbled and honored to be representing Darren and his mother in this way.

made it easy for people to give and receive a gift that that really want. We wanted to create a website that would allow consumers to put all of their favorite items in one place, said Andrew Tomka-Gazdik, that way, friends and family no longer have to guess what gifts you want, and have it all in one easy, and accessible place. Julia Collins comments, For us, it was important to take the guesswork out of gift giving by allowing people to see and to share wish lists, so we created a website where you can do exactly that. My advice to my fellow graduates: visit http://allireallywant.me/ and start creating your ultimate wishlist. It is easy as 1, 2, 3. Follow these steps and you will receive a gift that you really want.

Step #1: Create a profile Step #2: Find things you like online and add them to your list Step #3: Share your list with anyone you want, by email, Twitter or Facebook.

Massasoits Phi Theta Kappa Chapter Alpha Kappa Upsilon Experiences Nashville, TN
By: Maryann Serrilla and Matthew Forrest
In April, four of us from Massasoits Phi Theta Kappa Chapter Alpha Kappa Upsilon, got the chance of a lifetime! We attended the Phi Theta Kappa International Convention and stayed at the Gaylord Opryland and Convention Resort. Walking into this gorgeous hotel was just like entering a rainforest. With waterfalls, coy fish, plants, and even a river running through the hotel; who wouldnt want to stay at such a luxurious place? During the convention, the International Officers of Phi Theta Kappa were going to be elected. Alpha Kappa Upsilon had the privilege during the trip to campaign for Naomi Dias, Regional Officer at Large for the New England Region, who was running for International President of Phi Theta Kappa. Naomi Dias is a student from Cape Cod Community College and part of Alpha Kappa Upsilons sister chapter, Alpha Upsilon Mu. Throughout the course of this campaign we learned that we can grow stronger. Naomis campaign slogan declared, Step by step, bit by bit, its the little things that matter. On the opening night of the convention we had butterfly wings on to promote her campaign, and to illustrate how wings symbolize a new journey and a beginning. It was then and still is important now; we must let our wings take flight! It was announced during the opening ceremonies that 4,030 students from 587 chapters were present; breaking all previous convention records! Vice-President of Service, Michael Ford mentioned, Professor Mastrangelo was right, being in the same room as over 4000 other Phi Theta Kappa members was quite the experience. It was amazing being surrounded by that many different individuals who are all connected through one common group. On the second day, we were able to branch out, meet, and speak to members of Phi Theta Kappa from around the world. We attended workshops and informational sessions where we gained leadership material that we have brought back to not only our own chapter, but to the entire Massasoit community. Author Jon Acuff spoke at the Phi Theta Kappa Academy, reminding us to never give up on our passions. He mentioned, I find that I come across this Im but generation. Im a teacher but I want to be a musician. He asked us to think about our own passions and to ask ourselves, Where has this passion been? And why did I put it down in the first place? Jon Acuff reminded all of us of a very important life lesson. Dont forget the passions you have once loved to do and make it apart of your life before it is too late! KasSandra Williams, Phi Theta Kappa Alpha Kappa Upsilon member, described the convention vibe saying, Its great when you are around others who have the same energy level and goals as yourself. With PTK there is no shame in NERD SWAGG!!!! Everyones on the same level. The following day we had the pleasure of hearing from the author of the book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, Amy Chua. She spoke about the education systems in China versus the United States. Amy Chua pointed out, How can we as individuals thrive in todays globally competitive world? Build on our strengths, confront our weaknesses, and above all improve on them. It is important to listen to and take advice offered by individuals like Amy Chua who know how to be successful. Award-winning author Malcolm Gladwell also spoke. He was so awesome that we dont even dare try to sum up the magic he instilled in us. We urge you to go to YouTube and watch his speech. We all walked away with some valuable knowledge and advice about life. Now, its up to us to take what we have learned and implement it into our own lives. Later, during the evening The Hallmark Awards Ceremony was held. Although our chapter did not take home any awards, it was an incredible experience. We were able to meet likeminded honors students from around the world and gain leadership skills that we can use at Massasoit and beyond. A lifetime of memories and friendships were made against the gorgeous backdrop of The Gaylord Opryland and Convention Resort; and the four of us left Nashville changed for the better.

A Helping Hand
By: Nick Shuler
Being successful in the world today is not an easy task; moreover, many can agree that it begins with an education. Students face a variety of different issues that can begin in primary, secondary, or high school. Then after high school, students may want to transition into college. During this transition into college, students may still need some sort of support, but where should they look? Are there any programs that give help to students academically, financially, and even socially? The answer is yes, and it comes in the form of the TRiO Program. The TRiO Program is an academic support service for low income and first generation college students, as well as students with disabilities. It was named TRiO because it began with three programs called Upward Bound, Talent Search, and Student Support Services. Student Support Services, TRiOs college-level program, is now known by many different names since it is nationwide, with over 1,000 offices on campuses across the country. However, no matter where you go, their goal is always the same; they offer support for students. Here at Massasoit Community College, Alvin Riley is the Director of the PLAN/TRiO Program. Alvin has been dedicated to assisting students through the TRiO program for over six years. As the Director, he mentors and guides 155 students in the PLAN Program. Alvin explains, We do work with students on a one-on-one basis Students in this program are twice as likely to graduate because of the one-on-one basis and the relationships we build. PLAN stands for Proactive Learning Assistance Network. The staff is located on the first floor of the Student Center in room SC174. PLAN helps students academically by offering preventative measures. Cathy Brogna is in her eleventh year at Massasoit; she is a Counselor as well as a Learning/Disabilities Specialist. She said, We help them find a solution or a way for them to do what they need to do before it becomes so overwhelming that they cant do it. If you have a learning disability, then she can help you obtain more time to complete your test, or if you have Attention Deficit Disorder, she can make sure that youre put into a distractionfree environment. She will do anything to accommodate a students needs, with the proper documents from a doctor, of course. Elisabeth Dorsey, a PLAN Counselor and Chair of the newly formed PLAN Alumni Council, said, TRiO recognizes the natural gifts of intelligence and talent for students who dont always have enough resources and opportunities available for them to reach their potential; were here to help them step through new, opened doors. PLAN offers a widespread variety of services that include a range of professional career and study skill workshops, cultural events, academic tutoring, and college transferring guidance. Even PLAN alumni have become more involved. Paul Glemaud, a PLAN alumnus, is now PLANs Technology Specialist. He has been an alumnus from both Massasoit and PLAN since 2009. The most memorable thing for him was the cultural events - We did a lot, I cant even remember all of the trips, he said. Paul also assists students with borrowing technological resources such as calculators, laptops, and smart pens, etc. The TRiO Program helps students financially by enabling students to complete their FAFSA forms and pursue grants and scholarships whenever possible. Money should not be an obstacle in front of a student on the road to getting their degree. If youre in the program, theyll do everything in their power to make sure of that. Students in the program will also be guided socially. For many students, the problem that they have when going off to college is that they have no support to push them to do well. TRiOs counselors act as that support group. They also have many social events so that students and staff can become closer. For example, in the past theyve taken trips to New York City to see the backstage of MSNBC; they have seen Broadway theatre tours of Mama Mia and Burn the Floor; theyve been to the Boston Harbor and even to New Hampshire to go white water rafting; and, they went parasailing in Rhode Island. Students interested in transferring to a four-year school can be taken on a visit to that college to determine if the school will be a good fit for them when they leave Massasoit. The TRiO/PLAN Program is a great way to help students succeed. They help students academically with the ability to turn C students into A students. PLAN Counselor Kim Beatty said, I like working with students, whether its an English assignment or a math problem. I like to see that transformation. PLAN helps them financially, from filling out their FAFSA forms to earning scholarships. They even help students socially by helping them bond with their counselors, who allow the students to see things that they may not have seen on their own. Its very rewarding, I enjoy meeting new people; every semester someone new comes along, said Michelle Fitch, the PLAN Administrative Assistant. With a great staff like this, there is no wonder that theyve been around for so long, and will most likely continue to be in the future.

Top 10 Must See Movies of The Summer

By: Shelby Garlick
With the recent and enormous success of The Hunger Games, 2012 is poised to be a gigantic year for the film industry both commercially and critically. The entire year seems to be full of movies that are going to dominate the box office as well as the next award season. The summer in particular seems to be quite strong, and has the potential to produce some truly massive hits. So, in eager anticipation of the coming blockbuster season I have compiled what I consider to be the top ten must see movies of this summer. This is just based on my opinion of films so feel free to argue with the ranking but I think we can all agree that these films will be (hopefully) worth the price of admission at the very least.

10.

Total Recall- The current trend of Hollywood is remaking/rebooting everything, so it was only a matter of time until they got to this 1990 sci-fi blockbuster/cult classic and gave it a modern day reboot. With some big names and some amazing effects showcased heavily in the trailer, Total Recall looks to be one of Hollywoods better remakes.

9.

Abraham Lincoln Vampire HunterBased off of the bestselling novel, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is one of those movies that just sounds so absurdly awesome you just have to see it. Movies are all about suspending your belief, and I will have no issue suspending my disbelief watching the sixteenth president of the United States slay the bloodsucking creatures of the night.

8.

Dark Shadows- Tim Burton is back again and this time its a remake of a 1970s comedy show about a vampire and a (at the time) modern family. Johnny Depp dawns his most macabre makeup yet and stares in what may be a surprising comedy hit. Of course it is a Tim Burton movie hit so it will be all dark humor. I love puns.

7.

The Dictator- Sacha Baren Cohen returns to the big screen with yet another boundary pushing character and film premise. Unlike his past two films, The Dictator seems to be a genuine comedy and not some social experiment down for crowd reactions. Parodying the current uprising and downfalls of dictators, Sacha Baren Cohen is poised to make us laugh again with a healthy dose of very edgy and offensive jokes.

6.

Snow White and the Huntsman- As much as I despise Kristen Stewart as an actress, I cannot deny the appeal factor of this film. With big names as Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth (The Expandables, Thor), this well-known fairy tale is getting the blockbuster treatment from Hollywood with a multi-million dollar budget and a large amount of publicity and hype.

5.

The Amazing Spiderman- Since Toby McGuire has moved on this franchise, Hollywood is now rebooting a franchise that is only a decade old. The trailer appears to be phenomenal and Andrew Garfield, of The Social Network fame, looks to be great in the role of everyones favorite arachnid-themed superhero.

4.

Brave- After Pixars first and hopefully only mediocre film Cars 2, Pixar is looking to rebound with a beautifully animated epic about a Scottish girl looking to rebel against the norms in her tribe. With some top notch casting, voice acting, and the promise of something it appears that the Pixar we know and love is back to making good movies once again.

3.

Prometheus- Ridley Scott returns with what appears to be a truly unique and mind bending piece of science fiction. Scott is no stranger to making great science fiction, go watch Blade Runner if you need proof of this. The trailers for Prometheus are already showing off the amazing effects this film has to offer. Prometheus looks to take audiences to the far edge of the universe this summer, and I doubt we will be disappointed.

2.

The Avengers- Its hard to think of some films that have been so eagerly anticipated in 2012 (see the next film for another example of this) besides The Avengers. We finally get to see some of our favorite superheroes join forces on the big screen for one super powered battle royal. The film is already getting a massive amount of attention on Twitter, and the early reviews are nothing but positive. With a massive cast and several big names attached to it, The Avengers is sure to be a giant hit with audiences this May.

1.

The Dark Knight Rises The level of attention this film has received during post production is borderline insane. The rumors about The Dark Knight Rises were flying even before the film was put into production. Its created nothing but a media frenzy since Nolan announced a third film after his landmark film The Dark Knight. Usually the third film in a trilogy suffers, but with Christopher Nolans genius behind the wheel The Dark Knight Rises is looking to pack one enormous punch this summer. Ive been looking forward to this one ever since the release date was set. The Dark Knight Rises is the must see movie of this summer season.

The Show That Made Country Music Famous!

By: Maryann Serrilla
Yes, I am in fact talking about the one and only: The Grand Ole Opry! Located in Nashville Tennessee, The Opry is known for its famous country music. In April, I had the opportunity to visit this amazing place. If youre a country music fan, get ready to be blown away from the moment you step inside. Walking in the theater you feel so awestruck when it finally sinks in that this beautiful place is where famous country musicians once stood, and where memories continue to be made every night. Even though I sat in the nose bleed section of the theater I was able to see the whole stage and the performers clearly. Unlike most concerts, the Grand Ole Opry staff lets you go down to the main floor and take pictures of the country music performances. Another bonus to seeing a concert at The Opry is that the prices for tickets are affordable. Tickets were only $42.00 versus paying $150.00 or higher at most country concerts depending on where you sit. This was an experience well worth the money I paid. I saw three different acts perform in this breathtaking theater that is well- versed in country music history. By now you must be curious and wondering which country music stars I saw performing that night. First, Jana Kramer took the stage. Jana went from acting on the TV show One Tree Hill to following her dream of singing country music. Although she is relatively new on the scene, she is quickly becoming popular. Jana Kramer made her debut on The Grand Ole Opry stage the night I was there singing here hit single, Why You Wanna? It was incredible to be a part of that! Nineteen year old country sweetheart Hunter Hayes captured the hearts of the audience and truly sang from his soul while performing his new hit single Wanted. He also sang the song Storm Warning. Within two seconds all the girls crowded around the stage cheering for Hayes. Yep, a little crazy if you ask me! The last performers to take the stage were the popular husband and wife duo, Thompson Square. They sang their hit singles Glass and Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not? Witnessing and being a part of Jana Kramers first performance on The Grand Ole Opry stage was memorable. But, seeing Hunter Hayes and Thompson Square up close and personal was the most awesome experience I have ever had in my life. My night at The Grand Ole Opry was truly magical. I think for any country music fan visiting the country music capital of Nashville, a night at the Opry is necessary and should be at the top of any To-Do list! I would recommend a visit to The Grand Ole Opry to anyone who enjoys and appreciates country music. The talented musicians put their hearts and souls into their performances when they hit the stage. At the end, you leave knowing that you just had an experience full of memories that will last a lifetime and some good ole country music running through your head. If you are planning a trip down to Tennessee or are just interested in finding out more about The Grand Ole Opry, visit their website: www.opry.com . The Opry features many famous country music artists that come monthly so the schedule is always changing. You also have the option of going on a guided tour of the theater. This is an experience you do not want to miss; trust me!!

Bridging The Gap Between High School and College

By: Tatiana Jean-Noel
Hi! I see you have the Brockton High sweatpants on; did you just graduate from there in June? That friendly introduction is one of the things Ill remember about meeting Amanda Huggon-Mauretti, the Special Programs Director here at Massasoit Community College, for the first time. Feeling a bit shy and awkward, I slowly responded, Yes. I did. Why? Amanda, eager to continue our conversation proceeded to ask me if I had taken my placement test yet and how were my scores. I still had a puzzled look on my face, but Amanda continued to talk, Theres a program that Im running this summer called Summer Bridge that will help you in many ways. For all those wondering exactly what Summer Bridge is, Amanda explains, The Summer Bridge Program is designed to assist students in the transition to college by providing coursework in Math, Writing and Reading. For the past few years, the program has welcomed 20-25 incoming freshmen to the campus over the Summer II session. Besides catching students off guard (like myself ),those who work in The Summer Bridge Program also find students through guidance counselor referrals, early orientations on the Massasoit campus, and referrals from past participants. Curious about how students were chosen for Summer Bridge I asked, You said that you get referrals through guidance counselors and that you can only accept 20-25 students at a time, how do you choose the high schools to get the referrals from? Amanda explained, The program is available to students who will be attending Massasoit for the first time in the fall. We look for students from Brockton and Randolph high schools, and also schools that serve students from Brockton and Randolph, like Southeastern Regional Voc Tech, for example. We have also had great success with GED recipients from Youthbuild Brockton, so we welcome anyone with their GED who has been accepted to Massasoit. The Summer Bridge program has had countless success stories and impacted many incoming freshmen students since it began in 1999. I wanted to hear Amandas thoughts on why this program is so important to Massasoit and the success rates for its students over the past 13 years. Amanda told me, For students that come to Massasoit in the summer, we seek to ensure familiarity with the campus and its resources; but also give students a jump start on their degree programs or advancing through developmental math. Math classes have been the main offering for the last 3 summers because weve found that students who test into the first levels of math at Massasoit are those at the greatest risk of not completing their degree. She continued proudly, Weve had a great success rate with at least 90% of students advancing by a least one math level. Before our conversation ended, I asked Amanda if there was anything that students and also students with family members joining us here at Massasoit should know about the upcoming Summer Session II Summer Bridge Program this year. She replied, If you know someone that is interested in coming to college in the fall who may be the first in their family, this is a great way to start the process with support and gain the confidence needed to succeed. Having been a part of The Summer Bridge Program I can truthfully say it makes a difference, a huge difference!! It made an impact on me and helped me advance through my pre-requisites. So, spread the word!! If you or someone else you know needs more information, please contact Amanda HuggonMauretti at ahuggon@massasoit.mass.edu

100 Years of Fenway Park

By: Kyle DiGiandomenico
This April, the Red Sox celebrated the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park. It has been the home of the Red Sox since 1912, and there is no end in sight. The renovations and improvements to the park over the past several years ensure that it will be around for at least another 30 years. So many memories have been made in this baseball cathedral, and it is considered one of the best sports stadiums in the United States. Fenway Park has not just been home to the Red Sox, but to many teams throughout its 100 year history. It has hosted 19 soccer matches, and was also the one time home of the New England Patriots. Even the Boston Bruins played a game there in 2010, part of the NHLs Winter Classic. It has also hosted many concerts. Recently, Bruce Springsteen and The Rolling Stones have performed there. It has also been mentioned in a number of Red Sox fans have been rewarded movies, including Field of Dreams, with the improvements to Fenway Fever Pitch. And The Town. because they are considered some the most loyal fans in sports. The Red Sox I have had the opportunity to see many have sold out every home game since games at Fenway Park, and if you May 15, 2003, which is a major league havent been I would strongly recomrecord. It is also one of the small- mend it. It has an incredibly unique est parks in the league, holding less atmosphere and there is no better than 40,000 people. It is just 302 feet from home plate, the shortest porch in baseball.

1 and 3 Place Winners of One Book, One College

ST RD

Celebrate One Book, One College with Massasoit as we read and respond to Greg Melvilles Greasy Rider! A true story, Greasy Rider chronicles how the author chooses to power his car with vegetable oil, an alternative to gasoline, and sets off on a road trip seeking a more sustainable life.
Students were asked to choose from one of the following prompts: 1. What does the word sustainable mean to you? What can you do as an individual to live a more sustainable life, either in your consumption of resources, your management of personal relationships, your academic life, or your creative process? In other words, how do you keep or hold on to whats important to you? Write a poem, short story, or personal essay that explores the idea of sustainability. 2. Sometimes it seems that life does not give us many choices. But look closer: alternatives are everywhere, waiting to be tested. What alternative choices have you made in your life? What alternatives can you imagine changing

Sustainability

My hands digging up the Earth, Pressing seeds into the dirt, Planting baby daffodils, in the soft-churned soil. They will be yellow, good and ripe, Just takes some rain and sunlight, And soon enough, theyll be alive. So, the roots went down, The stems grew up, The buds did bud, And opened up. They blossomed until fully flowered, opened wider and wider-hour by hour. Soon my garden was full of life. Oh! To my happy hearts delight!-To see my little children sway in the wind, And glow in the summer light. But I left my garden to start another, Left my children without a mother, To begin another endeavor, That was much, much bigger. I had big plans for a new line of work. Id spend all my time in the dirt, And by the time they were all grown, Id pluck my blossoms from the Earth. So off I went, to better things, And by the following year, in the Spring, A new flower patch was full grown, but my little garden was left all alone. I returned near the Summers end, To revisit the garden I had left, and what did I find in my old flower bed? My little garden had gone brown, and dead. It was wild, weeded, and overgrown, And no new seeds had been sewn. My little garden had up and died, Because it was left alone. Without my devotion, Without my heart, My flowers wilted, went brown, And then dried up. How will anything sustain-That is, remain the same, Without dedication, toil, or heart? Thus are the ingredients to keep a garden tame.

Alternatives
By: Rebekah Kelley
When I think of California, I dont think of the palm trees or the sunset sky beaches. The pictures of Hollywood and the natural beauty of the state are not what my mind pictures. What I think of is the most difficult, yet most rewarding time in my life. The trials that we face in our lives make us stronger, and often times wiser. Your hardest tribulations and when you conquer them are what you remember with the most fondness. Its not the vacations or holidays or the birthday parties you feel triumphant about, its when you conquer that giant that you have been facing. When that giant is struck down, it fills you up with a sense of accomplishment. I was 16, and to me, back then, California wasnt just the name of a state. It was a destination. It was the summer of 2009, my three younger sisters and I were sitting on the porch at my nanas house, eating cherries by the pool and seeing who could spit the seeds the farthest. It was a hot June afternoon, and my dad was going to be there in a matter of minutes. He was taking a break from work to come get a letter that had come for him; a letter from California. As his truck pulled up, I handed him the letter that I knew would change our lives. This seemingly insignificant paper delivered the answer that my family and I had been waiting for. It was going to tell us whether or not my dad was accepted to a school out in California. My dad said that I would find out soon, but he had to get back to work. The truck drove away, leaving me curious. About 15 minutes later, my mom called. She said that my dad had been accepted to the school! I couldnt believe what I was hearing, as my mom told me to start packing and to tell my sisters. Our set leaving date: December 26th, 2009. Once we found out that we were moving, we sold our house, my dads truck, and most of our possessions. We packed what we could in a U-Haul pod and our mini-van. Everything else was either sold or thrown out. Although this was not an easy process, I knew that we had to go. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Once we sold our house, we lived with my grandparents until December 25th. It was Christmas, and probably the last one that we would spend with our entire family. As the night ended, many tears were shed for our leaving. It was a bitter-sweet moment for everyone. My dad was on vacation from work, and was planning on quitting via email in a few days. Early on the morning of December 26th, we said tearful goodbyes to my grandparents, and we were on our way to California. Even though I was sad about leaving, soon my excitement arose with the realization of what we were doing. We were on our way to the state of California! Our first stop: Hershey, Pennsylvania. We arrived at the hotel, and got checked in. We went up to our room, all of us with achy muscles after such a long drive, but with high spirits. And thats when the bomb was dropped. My dads phone rang. It was his employer, out in California. My dad talked with him for a minute or too, and then hung up. He looked at my mom, and said that the job he had fell through. He no longer had employment. My heart sunk, as confusion and worry engulfed me. What were we going to do? My parents took a walk through the hotel to talk. My sisters and I sat in silence, waiting for their return. Whichever path we chose, it was going to change our lives. When they came back, we discussed the situation as a family. We said that we could either go to California, or return home. After much discussion we made the choice to return. It was neither wise nor responsible for a family of six to go to California, which had the highest unemployment rate, with no jobs. We made some phone calls to family members who agreed to let us stay with them until we could find a place to live. However, we did not come back home defeated, with our tails between our legs. We arrived with our chins up, unashamed of what had happened. We were not conquered. We would overcome this, as a family. Soon, we found a vacant house for rent next door to my mothers grandparents. The house had always been admired by my mom, and a month later, we were getting it ready to move in. We stripped the walls of wallpaper, painted, swept, dusted, and moved into our new home on May 1st, 2010. My great aunt lived with my great-grandparents in the house next door, acting as their caregiver. The following Easter was hosted at my house, and my great grandfather was rolled over in his wheelchair and was able to attend, while my great-grandmothers Alzheimers disease had progressed too far for her to come. This would be my greatgrandfathers last Easter. Soon, my greatgrandmothers disease required an ambulance to come to her house and take her to a nursing home. My great-grandfather could not bear this, and he became very sick. He passed away on Mothers Day of 2011. About 3 weeks later, on June 13th, my great-grandmother passed away as well. My family and I were right there for my great aunt, literally, if she ever needed our help. My mom was a great comfort to her aunt, probably more than she will ever know. Moving to California took strength, but coming back took courage. We had the courage to look that giant in the eye and say, We will not be defeated; our faith will not be diminished. We will be stronger, we will conquer, and we will live through this. That giant went tumbling down, and fell, along with all the doubts we had, and all those voices telling us that we could never do this. Since that alternative was taken, my great aunt had comfort in a time of need, a family grew stronger, and a challenge was conquered. I would not trade this experience for all the sunsets and beaches in California. I am now closer to my great aunt and the rest of my family than I could ever be, and my family is tougher and more unified because of this experience. We made the choice to sell everything we had, move away from everyone we knew, and start a new life. We didnt choose wrong; we proved to ourselves that if we can go through all that, and stay a family, and stay strong, then we can weather any storm that life can throw at us. We took the alternative road, and it was a hard one. Alternatives dont always provide the easy way out. The path of least resistance is one that includes no chances to prove yourself, while the path that my family and I took contained brutal, violent times. Still, we climbed to the top of that hill, stood on the peak, and felt triumph.

Lady Warriors 180 Degree Turnaround
By: Zahra Alavi
One word to describe the Lady Warriors softball 2012 season is impressive. They finished the regular season with a record of 11-13 and with a winning percentage of just below .500 at .458. The Lady Warriors have revolutionized from the team they were last year. In the 2011 season they finished 2-14. Talk about a turn around. Thanks to the more experience players and the excellent recruiting by Coach Semeler giving the Lady Warriors a chance to be competitive this year. Coach Semeler should be ecstatic that the girls have come a long way since day one. The most anticipated game for the Lady Warriors was against Lady Bulldogs of Dean because this would of determined who would play against CCRI in the post season. It was a time for revenge since the Lady Warriors dropped two games to Dean earlier in the season. In the first game Rylee Burt pitched a superb game. She went for 7 innings and allowed no earn hits or runs. Rylee had a season high with 14 strikeouts. On offense Kendra McMasters, Rylee Burt, Amanda Daily and Mari Croce each had 2 RBIs and went 2 for 4. The Lady Warriors found themselves in a dilemma as two runners were in scoring position at the top of the 9th. Jess Hines made a crucial play by taking away a hard hit drive up the middle to get the outs and clinch the game. Lady Warriors won 4-3. In their second game Rylee Burt kept the strong pitching going 7 innings allowed 2 hits, no earned runs and 7 strikeouts. The Lady Warriors defense was a solid performance only allowing 1 error. Both Jess Hines and Allie Gustin went 2 for 3. Kendra McMasters and Mari Croce had RBI doubles. Lady Warriors won 5-1 to advance to the post season. In the Womens Softball NJCAA DII Softball region 21 Tournament the Lady Warriors faced CCRI in a series best of 3. Unfourntately the Lady Warriors came up short losing 7-0 and then 8-0. Lady Warriors put their best effort, but could not contain CCRIs explosive offense. As the season came to a halt coach Semeler has set the bar high for the Lady Warriors softball team. Congratulations to Kendra McMasters, Val Rodrigues, and Rylee Burt all for making the region team. Who knows how far the Lady Warriors will advance in the 2013 season. We will just have to wait and see.
