Gioconda Belli

Gioconda Belli is a famous nicaraguan writer. She was born in December 19th, 1948 in Managua. She started to write poetry in 1979 been awarded by his poems. Gioconda was against Somoza's dictatorship, this mean she had to runaway from Nicaragua to Mexico and Costa Rica. For many years she was politic refugee. Somoza's regime send her to prision, since 1979 she was a revolutionary soldier of Frente Sandinista de Liberacion Nacional FSLN, this was a clandestine organization where the point was to erase the Somoza's regime. In the end she worked for the government. Gioconda highligted as a poet and novelist first with poetic plays like "Linea De Fuego", "Truenos y Arcoiris", "De La Costilla de Eva". Later she published in 1988 a famous novel called "La Casa Habitada". Su padre Humbeto Belli was a bussinessman and her mother Gloria Pereira was the founder of the Experimental Theather in Managua. Gioconda was the second of five sibblings: Humberto, Eduardo, Lucia y Lavinia. she studied elementary school in La Asuncion Primary School and preparatory in Madrid in the Real Colegio de Santa Isabel where she graduated in 1965, after she got a diploma from Philadelphia in Journalism and Publicity. In 1967 she got married and in 1969 she delivered her first daughter called Maryam, her poems started to become famous because the way she write, her sensuality and erotic ways to write poem make her a popular poet in th US. Her book "Sobre La Grana" in 1967 was awarded with the most special prize in those years the "Mariano Fiallos Gil" from the National Autonomus University Of Nicaragua, as other artist in that epoch she support as much as she could to the FSLN and she got the prestigious Casa De Las Americas Prize in Cuba thanks to her poem "Lineas De Fuego". She was headmaster from the Writer Union and was founder of the literary suplement "Ventana". Betwenn 1982 and 1987 she wrote three poetry books: "Truno y Arcoiris" "Amor Insurrecto" "De La Costilla De Eva"

These books have been published in the UK, Italy, Germany, Spain, Mexico. In 1988 her first novel "La Mujer Habitada" was vey claimed by the interviews, just in Germany was almost a million of copy sold, and like 20 editions, this novel got the Writer Prize, and the Anna Seghers award, since it was published the novel had been translated in 11 languages, in US Warner Books published the book with the name "The Inhabited Woman".

In 1990 she published her second novel called "Sofia de Los Presagios", in 1996 "Waslala" both translated in many languages. Also she wrote a children's book called "El Taller de Las Mariposas" published in german, italian and dutch. In 1998 "Apogeo". The last writing of Gioconda are: In 2002 "El Pais bajo Mi Piel" this book was published in englis language with the name "The Country under My Skin: A Memory of Love and War" in England and United States. In 2008 "El Infinito en las Palma de la Mano" In 2010 "El Pais de Las Mujeres" this novel at first was called "Cronicas De La Izquierda Erotica" but was change by copyright problem.

The catalan singer Carme Canela recorded an album based in Gioconda's poems with jazz influence in 2008 called "Carme Canela canta Gioconda Belli". Since 1999 Gioconda lives between the US and Nicaragua with her children from her two marriage.
