Why mocktails equal a great party


Youre throwing a party. Maybe its a lazy summer barbecue. Or a classy sit down dinner. Or even a musicblaring, the neighbors are gonna kill me event. Whatever the occasion, you know drinking and driving is an issue because you havent been living under a rock. And since youre a relatively thoughtful type, youd like to help your guests refrain from things like vehicular manslaughter. Now your friends are probably equally well meaning. Theyre responsible folk. Theyve even offered to get everyone else home in one piece. But somewhere in the midst of all these good intentions, you end up with a bunch of designated drivers whos good intentions fell flat. When did everything go wrong? Possibly when you brought out a frothy pitcher of margaritas for the drinkers and lukewarm cola for the drivers. Bad idea. Remember, the decision not to drink isnt supposed to be painful. Thats where this book comes in. Its chock-full of liquor-less libations that will make the non-drinkers the envy of your party.

Ti ps for responsible alcohol consumption:


Do not drink for the sake of drinking. Avoid beer bongs, beer pong, chugging and drinking games. Dont drink on an empty stomach. High protein, high fat foods (such as cheese or nuts) are best to eat before and while you drink. Pace yourself. Sip your drink, dont gulp. Dont consume more than one drink per hour. It takes the body 60-90 minutes to fully feel the effects of alcohol on a full stomach.(One 12oz. beer, one 5oz. glass of wine, or one mixed drink that has only one 1 oz. shot of alcohol in it, is considered one drink.) Know when youve had enough. Monitor your feelings and continually check in with yourself for any changes in mood or perceptions. This way you can avoid the dreaded hangover, and you wont be the topic of everybodys conversation in the morning. H.A.L.T. Never drink when you are Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired. Alternate alcoholic beverages with non-alcoholic beverages and be sure to drink plenty of water to keep your body adequately hydrated. Set an alcohol limit for yourself for the evening before you start drinking. Never leave your drink unattended or accept an open beverage from anyone. Avoid carbonated beverages while drinking alcohol. Carbonation causes alcohol to be absorbed into the blood stream faster. ALWAYS have a sober designated driver. This is not the least drunk person. It is always good to keep the phone number of the local cab company with you just in case!

Remember to have water, and food available throughout your party for the designated drivers and guests who choose to drink alcohol.

Following these guidelines does not guarantee that a person can drink alcohol without developing a problem. These tips are offered to encourage moderation and safer drinking practices for those who choose to drink.

Black Bean and Mango Salsa


Time: short, makes 4 servings 1 envelope Good Seasonings Italian dressing and recipe mix 1 can black beans 1 package frozen corn 1 cup chopped ripe mango cup chopped red pepper 1/3 cup chopped red onion 1/3 cup chopped cilantro cup lime juice Mix all ingredients until well blended and cover. Refrigerate at least 1 hour. Serve with grilled chicken or tortilla chips.

Fruit Medley
Time: short, makes 6 servings 1 cup blueberries 1 cup strawberries 1 cup kiwi 1 cup mandarin oranges cup cool whip 1 small can mandarin oranges Toss fruit with reserved orange liquid. Spoon evenly into 6 individual servings. Top with whipped cream. Enjoy!

Ice 1.5 oz pineapple juice 1.5 oz key lime carbonated water 5 squirts Hersheys chocolate syrup Whipped topping Chocolate shavings

Directions

Mix pineapple-mango juice, and key lime water together in a cup. Add 5 Squirts of chocolate syrup to drink Serve over ice and garnish with whipped topping and chocolate shavings.

Ingredients:
3 parts white cranberry peach juice 1 part sparkling water 1/4 part blueberry juice 1/4 part black cherry juice Ice

Directions

Mix all ingredients and serve over ice.

Lowfat Greek Hummus


10 min (10 min prep) makes 4 servings 1 (16 ounce) can garbanzo beans, drained 2 cloves garlic 2-3 tablespoons lemon juice teaspoon ground cumin teaspoon sesame oil 1/3 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional) 1 tablespoon plain nonfat yogurt teaspoon salt Add all ingredients together in food processor. Process until smooth. Serve as a dip for vegetables or as a filling for gyros. For gyros, toppings may include lettuce, tomato, cucumber, red onion, radishes, parsley, olives or feta cheese. Great with pita chips!

Ingredients:
3/4 Cup Roses sweetened lime juice 3/4 Cup Roses mango martini juice 3/4 Cup pia colada mixer 1 can Welchs passion fruit concentrate 36 oz. Sprite Few drops Grenadine Optional garnishes: sugar sprinkles, lime wedges, maraschino cherries.

Directions

Pour entire contents of passion fruit juice concentrate in blender, add enough sprite to just cover and blend. Add remaining sprite and stir. Add lime and mango juices and pia colada mixer. Stir thoroughly.

Munchy Trail Mix


Intermediate, makes 6 servings 2 cups Cheerios cereal 2 cups Bite-size squares cereal (any variety) 2 cups Crispy corn puffs cereal 1 cups raisins 1 cup Candy-coated chocolate candy (M&M) 1 cup Peanuts Put in large bowl and mix well.

Ingredients:
2 Cups 7-up 1 Cup margarita mix 1/2 scoop Gatorade mix 1 Drop green food coloring Green crystal sprinkles

Directions
Blend all ingredients, and garnish with green crystal sprinkles.

Blend all ingredients into a frothing consistency and garnish with kiwi.

Low-Fat Pita Chi ps


20 min (5 min prep) makes 4 servings (about 32 chips per serving) 2 pita bread, white or wheat, pocket-style 1 egg white 1 tablespoon olive oil salt or other powdered seasonings to taste Preheat oven to 350. With scissors, cut pitas around the outside into 2 rounds each. Whisk together egg white and olive oil. Brush this onto the insides of the four pita rounds. Season however you want. I've used garlic powder, Cajun seasoning, Greek seasoning, cayenne pepper, curry powder- all delicious. Stack the rounds and cut them into 8 triangles. Spread in single layer onto baking sheet, seasoned side up, and bake for about 15 minutes, making sure they are no longer soft, but not too brown. Store (I've never gotten around to this part) in an air-tight container or bag. Mmmmmm, guilt-free snacking.

Mix equal parts of strawberry margarita mix and cranberry juice cocktail. Add a teaspoon or desired amount of sweetened lime juice. Dip glass rim in sugar. Pour mixture over ice. Garnish with cherry or lime wedge. For a frozen treat blend mixture with ice.

Deviled Eggs
60 min, makes 12 servings 6 hard-boiled eggs 1 teaspoon sugar 1 tablespoon white vinegar 1 can (16-oz) garbanzo beans (chickpeas), rinsed and drained 2 tablespoon nonfat mayonnaise 2 tablespoons nonfat sour cream 2 tablespoons yellow mustard 1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper 2 tablespoons minced green onion 1/4 teaspoon ground paprika Remove shells from eggs. Halve eggs lengthwise; remove and discard the yolks. In a small bowl, dissolve sugar in vinegar. Rinse the chickpeas and drain thoroughly. In a food processor or blender, combine chickpeas, sugar mixture, mayonnaise, sour cream, mustard, pepper, onions and clove and blend until smooth. Spoon mixture into egg whites or fill using a fluted pastry bag. Sprinkle with paprika, if desired, and refrigerate until ready to serve.
