Introduction

Objective: TostudyandpresenttheprovisionsofBS5950part1relatedtothedesignoftension members,compressionmembersandflexuralmembers

Scope: TheBS 5950 Part1 givesrecommendationsforthedesignofstructuralsteelworkusing Hotrolledsteelsections,Flats,Plates,Hotfinishedstructuralhollowsections,Coldformed structuralhollowsectionsinbuildingsandalliedstructures.

Generalprinciple: Theaimofstructuraldesignshouldbetoprovide,astructurecapablefulfillingitsintended functionandsustainingthespecifiedloadsforitsintendedlifewithdueregardto economy. Appropriatepartialfactorsshouldbeappliedtoprovideadequatedegreesofreliabilityfor ultimatelimitstatesandserviceabilitylimitstates. 1.Ultimatelimitstates concerningthesafetyofthewholeorpartofthestructure.
