Chapter 2 METHODOLOGY This chapter will cover the detailed explanation of methodology which will be used in producing a fully

functional project. It

includes gathering of significant information in providing solutions to the problems determined in chapter 1. The delimitation and scope of the project will be included also in this chapter. The methods will be used to achieve the objective of the project that will accomplish a perfect result. Project Methodology The development cycle that will be used through out this project is composed of 5 stages namely: planning, Analysis, design,

implementation and support. Planning will be the first stage in creating the actual project. To identify the information and requirements needed such as hardware and software, planning must be done in the proper manner. Planning has two main elements namely data collection and the requirements of

hardware and software. Gathering and allocation of resources will also be conducted to ensure that the project provides the required

capability on time and within budget. Data collection intend to use The this is a stage stage to in every study. The researchers about the project have

from the library. Books, journals and research paper collected in the internet will also provide a great help to the researchers. This project is based on the idea of Student Attendance Using RFID Systems by Mahyidin presented in the internet. RFID based

microcontroller from mytutorialcaffee.com are very good in acquiring information as well as reading forums on the internet. The hardware and software requirements are included in the

planning stage. This stage of planning will be used to identify all the materials needed in the project. The proponents will prepare a list of all the materials and components to be used in the project such as the microcontroller, LCD, Buzzer, keypad, Dot Matrix,

measuring tools, EEPROM, power supply, and cad software for creating the circuits and for circuit simulations. The availability,

functionality, and cost are some of the criterion in selecting the materials.

The second stage will be the analysis of individual subsystem of circuit design to arrive with a good decision-making in providing

solutions and alternatives and the appropriate circuit design for the project. The researcher will conduct experiments on the individual subsystem design along with the hardware components using the tools

in

the

laboratory.

peripherals, the researchers will use the educational board created by the previous computer students and the programmer available in the laboratory. Software will also be used in simulating circuits like multisim in choosing the appropriate circuit design. The researcher will choose assembly language in programming the microcontroller. The third stage will be the design of the appropriate circuit. The design stage has two elements namely hardware and software design. In the hardware design, creating of the appropriate circuit design such as schematic and pcb layouts, Easy Applicable Graphical Layout Editor (EAGLE) from Cadsoft will be used. Diptrace and express pcb will be some alternatives in developing the design. Designing of

prototypes will be conducted in this stage as well. In the software part, the programs will be developed using the MCU 8051 IDE. Fourth stage will be the implementation. Implementation is

divided into two parts namely: Unit test and Integration test. In the unit test the reliability of each subsystem will be verified

thoroughly. The circuit design will be tested using some testing tools and some measuring tools to verify the expected output. Oscilloscope and multi tester are among the tools which will be used in testing the voltages and currents of individual circuit. The individual programs will be verified and simulated using the MCU 8051 IDE. Lastly, after the individual subsystem is verified, the integration test is

implemented.

Last stage will be the support stage which will be conducted to identify errors, monitor system performance and identifying

enhancements or improvements of the system. Below is the block diagram along with the systems operation and functions to be followed in the development of the project.

produce the product. The subsystems for the project will be: power supply, Dot Matrix, LCD, Keypad, Buzzer, EEPROM, main board, external memory and In-system-programmer (ISP). Each subsystem will be

carefully designed or modified and selected to meet the requirements of the system. The power supply will be carefully tested before installing in the system. It will be utilized to convert alternating current (ac) to direct current (dc) and supply power to the system. The expected

outputs for the power supply will be carefully chosen to comply with the power requirement of the system. The at89s52 which will be used in the project is chosen because of its built-in in-system programmable (ISP) flash memory. ISP is the ability of some programmable device to be program while installed in the system rather than programming to program be used and the the for device prior to its

microcontroller. In order to identify and collect data from the user the

proponents use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. RFID will be used as input device in the system. The RFID module collects data using radio waves from tags that is read with the help of RFID reader. The RFID module will be utilized to identify the faculty members which are inside or outside of the faculty office. Each faculty

members will be given a unique tag to uniquely identify the faculty members by the controller and make decisions from it. The data receive from the RFID will be compared to the one stored in the

microcontrollers memory or in the external memory EEPROM. The faculty member must use his/her unique tag before entering and leaving the faculty. If the serial number of the tag is matched with the one already in the system then the system will indicate through LCD

implying that the instructor is inside or outside the faculty room.

A Keypad will be installed in the system to be used by the students. If the student wants to meet the faculty member for his/her concerns he/she will enter the designated number of the instructor. If he/she wants to cancel the operation the reset key will be provided, the enter key will be used to trigger the buzzer and the name of the faculty member will be displayed in the dot matrix prompting that the student is calling for the instructors attention.

which

be used

programming the device is assembly language. The limitations of the SIT Faculty Monitoring System include the following: The prototype can only be used using the tags provided by the researchers. It will also utilize the used of passive RFID using the low frequency range. The system will not provide information about the whereabouts of the faculty member incase he/she is outside the faculty room. In addition, it is beyond the scope of this project that the researchers will design the RFID module circuit. There will be no backup power supply in the case of power interruption that will be installed in the system. The microcontroller that will act as the brain of the system will only be Plastic Dual In-line Package (PDIP) manufactured by Atmel Corporation.

Data Gathering Techniques The researchers will utilize the internet and books that are available. In addition, and consultations methods with will instructors, be made in survey, order to

develop the SIT Faculty Monitoring System. The following methods will be utilized in gathering necessary data for the study: Research. The internet will be used by the researchers as the one of the major source of data for the project. The researchers also utilized books found in the universitys library to gain additional information regarding the subject matter.
