Grrr..Zombies by Marc Lee 2

Welcome to the world of Z. The future is a dark one as the dead have risen to feast upon the living. In Z players eld forces of either zombies or humans as mankind wages a desperate struggle to survive in an unknown world. Cities have been shattered, neighborhoods torn apart, and humanity is hanging on by a thread. Pockets of what can be loosely called civilization exist around the globe, but no formal governments stand ready to protect its people. Some elements of world armies still exist but there are simply too many of the enemy to mount an effective counterattack on a large scale. This enemy has no motive other than to feed. There are no objectives for them to seize and hold; no supply lines are needed to keep them ghting. The worst part- their numbers are without end. For each zombie put down, two more seem to spring up in its place. Most humans that fall to these monsters rise again as one of them; their single purpose being to kill. Despite this tragic past and equally tragic future, some people stand in deance of the horde. Be they brave, resigned, or mad, these soldiers take to the streets to cut down the enemy. In the pockets of civilization still remaining, armies have formed. Some are elements of government forces equipped with modern ghting technology and some are local militias wielding everything from axes to baseball bats, shotguns to replica swords. There have even been rumors of Church communities and convicts banding together to fortify their makeshift homes and ght back the dark plague that threatens to engulf the land. The struggle to survive looks to ultimately be a lost cause, but some will not give up the hope for a return to the Pre-Z days before the Outbreak. Apocalypse-Z is a world setting supplement for Battleeld Evolution by Mongoose Publishing and youll need a copy of those rules to gain full use of this book. You will also need some six-sided and ten-sided dice, as well as a tape measure. Z, being a tabletop wargame, begs the use of miniature soldiers. There are a large number of miniature gure manufacturers out there, some with really amazing zombies. Check out the section on Miniatures and Terrain for model manufacturers and some terrain making tips. While the armies and units in Z are designed to be playable in a stand-alone format, theres absolutely nothing stopping you from playing against other

armies in any Battleeld Evolution rule set or expansion. You can check the New Rules and Traits section for special rules when using other forces against the units presented in this book. This initial supplement details the human group known as the Enclave as well as the Zombie Horde. Future supplements will introduce new factions as well as new units for existing factions. One of the main reasons we all play tabletop miniature wargames if for FUN! Lets face it; unless youre playing in a high-stakes tournament with loads of prizes on the line, none of us are playing for the greenbacks. Remember to have fun and be a sport. Just because the zombie abomination youre elding wants to rip the head off of its adversaries and feast on their brains, doesnt mean you really have to do the same to your opponent (unless, of course, hes got really juicy braaaiiinnsssss). Should a disagreement ever arise that you cannot quickly remedy by thumbing through this or one of the main Battleeld Evolution rulebooks, simply expedite the process and each player choose either even or odds. Then roll a six-sided die. Whichever number is rolled determines which players interpretation of the rules wins the day. Once youve got this settled, you can keep on playing. You can always go back for a more indepth read of the rules after the game is over. If you still cant nd the answer there, check the Exploding Goat Games website for clarication; we really do love the company, honest. Remember, as alwaysGood Gaming!

[sssccchhhkkkk] Good morning and welcome to ChronoCorp Internationals Silver Spring Medical Research Facility. Here at Silver Spring, ChronoCorp is working around the clock to enhance not only the quality of life, but the length of life itself. A world leader in biomedical research, ChronoCorp strives to make real the best in medical technology ever seen on the planet Earth. Our goal here at ChronoCorp is to extend the average human life expectancy past 125 years by 2013. We trust youll enjoy your stay here at our Silver Spring Facility. Please feel free to visit our guest services center and sign up for a guided tour of the [sssccchhhkkkk] Thank you and enjoy [sssccchhhkkkk] stay Jenkins stepped over the bisected corpse of what once must have been a janitor as he made his way farther into the bowels of the derelict research facility. Damn, unbearable. Sarge, the stench in this place is unbearable. Jenkins slowly traversed the room keeping his MP5N trained on the unknown area ahead. His team of Navy SEALS was tasked to determine what occurred at the massive high-tech facility. It had gone largely ofine two days prior and all electronic and phone communications with the outside world had been cut. The team was dispatched after a bleeding and rambling laboratory technician staggered out of the building and into the street. He had been picked up by the local sheriff and transported to a nearby hospital. Several attempts had been made to question him, but he was bordering on insanity and his incoherent ramblings only gave vague details of some form of attack. The local police SWAT team held a perimeter while the Secretary of Defense had been notied. Due to the classied nature of some of the Pentagon research projects being conducted at Silver Spring, it would not do to have civilians inside. The rst group of Force Recon Marines, sent in that same day, never came out.

spun and had moments to glimpse his attacker before he was borne to the ground by a leaden weight. When he hit, the air was momentarily blasted from his body and he felt a wrenching feeling in his shoulder. Fighting through the pain with clenched teeth he turned his head and, in horror, saw his attacker. A man, or what was once a man, loomed over him with its ragged mouth agape. Jenkins could not believe his eyes when he saw that the man, dressed in the tattered and bloody remnants of a three piece suit, had only one arm. The other ended in a bloody, putreed stump just under the elbow. Large chunks of esh appeared to have been torn from his body and much of his rib cage exposed, revealing the dripping organs inside. One eye socket was empty and a crack in the mans skull ran from the bridge of his nose and over the top of his head. This man should be down thought Jenkins, This what is this?!? what Jenkins brought to bear his rie and squeezed the trigger. Through the muzzle ash, Jenkins saw the rounds strike home in a gout of blood. The beast staggered briey, but returned its onslaught. JESUS panicked Jensen as he began to push himself backwards along the oor. He let out a scream as he squeezed the trigger a second time. This time, the magazine emptied and he began to fumble in the pouch of his assault vest for a replacement. As he dropped the spent magazine to the oor, the man half-fell, half-leapt upon him. Jenkins, pinned to the ground, tried desperately to reach for the combat knife strapped to his thigh. As he did this, he felt another attacker grab his leg and a searing pain shot up to his hip. He screamed as the man on top of him opened his mouth and lunged towards his neck. He kicked frantically at the unseen attacker on his leg as a cold numbness spread up towards his knee. The SEAL felt the helmet ripped from his head and several teeth broke as the chinstrap slammed his jaw shut before it snapped in half. Jenkins saw ashes of white burst in his eyes as his BDUs were clawed to pieces. He let out the scream of a trapped animal as his rst attacker dug its teeth into the soft esh of his neck. He saw, through fading vision, his lifeblood spatter across his attackers face; then all was darkness.

Keep your mind on the mission Jenkins he heard over his Objective Force Warrior communications system embedded in his helmet, and quit bellyaching aboaaaarrrhhh. We here at ChronoCorp Internationals Biomedical Advancement Division have families too, and we all have loved ones weve lost. Now, with our state-of-the-art scientic advancements, we can hold on to those people that much longer. Were proud to introduce Denicalis, the latest in life extending technology. Denicalis doesnt just delay the harsh effects of aging, it REVERSES them! Weve been able to alter, at the genetic level, a cells need for certain proteins without which, normal cells age and die.

Denicalis stops human cells from needing those proteins and allows them to continue to grow and regenerate. Denicalis has wide-reaching medical applications from gerentolgy, traumatic injury rehabilitation, degenerative mental disorders, and more. Denicalis has uses in the public health, governmental, private sector, and military industries. Already, the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff have ordered full battleeld testing. If Denicalis is good enough for our brave ghting men and women, its good enough for Grandma!

The world setting of Apocalypse-Z begins a few years after much of the worlds population has been turned into zombies after a virus, designed to extend human life expectancy, actually kept dead people regenerating and motive. After The Outbreak, as it has come to be known, pockets of humans struggle to survive against the never ending Zombie Horde. Most humans have banded together into groups for protection. These groups generally have a base of operations from which they defend against zombies as well as other human factions. With the loss of most of societys infrastructure, resources are very limited and jealously guarded. To represent the relative paucity of resources and to capture the avor of the zombie genre, there are a few new advanced rules weve implemented.

NEW ADVANCED RULES & TRAITS

The Living
Since the core of this game involves zombies, a form of undead creature, there is a need to specify certain weapons, traits, and effects that only harm or benet the zombies. The Traits section adds the Undead trait, but, just to eliminate any controversy or questions later, any human model is to be considered living. Rather than give attributes of the living, just take it at face value that if it effects the undead, your US Marines or Enclave Watchers are safe. Trust us, youll know the undead when you smell them!

New Advanced Rules

Any Battleeld Evolution Modern Force list can be used with Apocalypse Z with only a few minor changes. The cost of all vehicles is increased by 50% and the cost of all aircraft is increased by 100%. This represents both the rarity of vehicles and aircraft in this world setting as well as the difculty keeping vehicles and aircraft fueled and maintained. The human survivors have learned that the best way to take down a zombie fast is to aim for the head. To represent this ability any living model or unit may take a ready action to aim any weapon that does a single die of damage and does not have the Lethal Zone or Flame Traits. During the model/units next shoot action add +1 to their attack. Any weapon with the Auto trait loses the Auto trait for this shoot action.

Building An Army

Before the start of any game, you and your opponent should decide upon a xed point total for you forces. The typical force total for a good two to three hour game of Apocalypse-Z is 1500 points. 1500 points will allow you to take some of the more powerful units and add some more hard-hitting weapons to your army. Of course, theres nothing saying that you cant have more or less points for your game, depending upon the amount of time you have, any scenarios you create, or how many models each player is bringing to the table. An army consists of groups of combatants called units. These units typically stay together during the entire game, using the Battleeld Evolution core command rules in the Units section of the main rulebook. Each unit in this game is assigned a specic points value. This number represents the cost towards your army total. The basic cost is for a unit of similar models. This might be for a single model, in the case of large or powerful models or characters, or it might be for a listed number of models that function together during the game. Some units allow you to purchase more models to bolster the ghting strength of the unit as a whole. This is reected in the basic unit rules and typically says something like, you may add up to 4 (four) more models to this unit for a cost of + 10 points each. Some units also allow for weapons or augmentation upgrades. These will be listed in the Special Rules and Restrictions for each unit. You might be able to upgrade a gun issued to a unit from The Enclave, or give a unit of zombies extra attacks by giving them the aptly named Extra Attacks physical augmentation. To determine the points cost total of that unit, add together the basic cost of the unit, the points of any additional models assigned to that unit, and any upgrades or augmentations taken. This total is then subtracted from the total number of points you have for your army list. Once youve reached your agreedupon points total, youre ready to play! 10

Tactics No army, in-and-of itself, is unstoppable. Some armies are easier to play and require less forethought than others, but skilled players who know their armys units and potentials can lay waste to even the toughest of opponents. Knowing your army is the rst step in building an effective ghting force. This fact is especially important for The Enclave, or any human army ghting in the world of ApocalypseZ. Zombies are inherently tough to re-kill (they are already dead, after all), hit hard in close combat, and have a nasty habit of making more zombies from their slain opponents. For a human general to survive and ourish, he or she must be able to use each units strengths to their full potential. A wise player also knows which units are dead before they hit the table. While it sounds cruel, winning battles takes hard decisions and the willingness to sacrice a unit of combatants to achieve the greater mission goals. A unit of Zombie Cleansers, for instance, is one of The Enclaves most powerful weapons in the struggle against the zombie hordes. The Cleansers have the Mark 1 Cleanser that does some really heavy damage to zombie units. The relatively short range of this weapon (12) coupled with a players inevitable desire to use the unit, typically means that Cleansers dont make it home from battle. You must weigh the cost versus the benets when using such a unit and understand their mission so that you dont scream in frustration when they inevitably get swamped by hungry zombies. Thats just a Cleansers lot in life. They understand this when they sign up (trust us, weve talked to them). Another key component of the Zombie Hordes is their ability to bring back eliminated models under the Endless Horde rule. A human player must always keep this ability in mind when theyre pressing hard for their victory. Most of the zombies you eliminate will come back at you later in the game. Determine what your objectives are, kill the zombies in your way, and fortify, fortify, fortify! There are times when it is more tactically sound to leave a zombie unit alone so they dont re-spawn later when your forces are more depleted. To discuss your tactics with other Z players, visit our Exploding Goat Forums, linked from our website at www.explodinggoatgames.com.

The Zombie Hordes

We didnt mean for this to happen. All of the projected test results indicated phenomenal success rates. Never before in my time with ChronoCorp had I ever seen such projected gures. The test subjects from the rst batch of candidates reacted overwhelmingly well to the serum. Sure six of the twenty test subjects died within minutes of the injection, but wed initially expected over twelve of the vagrants to die within the rst hour of project implementation. I personally found it rather amusing to see the scum of the earth used for the betterment of mankind. They were such a drain on the system, such leeches upon the veins of society that they could only be redeemed through the sacrice they were making. Since the dawn of mankind, the best minds have tried to extend the life expectancy of people well beyond their natural limits. WE were nally on the verge of doing it. WE were the ones to bring this new biotechnology to into the world.

Each motive system had restored itself to working capacity. We noted a substantial restoration of the subjects digestive system as well. At rst we found it odd that the mans circulatory, respiratory, and neurological systems hadnt seen the same repair rates, but that was something for future consideration. We had nally found a way for an injured person to re-grow limbs.

Most astonishing was when test soldier three-alpha tore apart a prisoner, picked up the mans rearm, and used it against the remaining prisoners. While the soldier was nowhere near the same skill level he had in life, he was able to take down two prisoners before expending the ammunition in the weapon.

As I was being pulled into the helicopter for nal evac, I was bitten on the leg by one of the zombies. During the ight out, I noticed that the small wound area went unnoticed by the rest of the passengers on the helicopter. I decided that this would be an excellent opportunity to test Omega-Six. I quickly injected myself with a heavy dose of the antiviral and dressed my wound. When we reached our evac destination in upper state New York, we realized that several other evacuees had also sustained bites. After a brief argument, we decided to try Omega-Six on the wounded, but I didnt bother to tell the others of my situation. After two days, we noted a distinct slowing in the effects of the bites from the infected. I still have yet to feel any of the effects, perhaps because of my heavy dose of the anti-viral. We heard news of the repeated failed attempts by the military to retake the Silver Spring facility. All we can do is wait and hope the Omega-Six works. We didnt mean for this to happen.

The test room was then summarily cleansed with the newly designed anti-zombie spray weapon. When test group Foxtrot was run through the same scenario, the results were similar. The problem arose during the cleansing phase. When the Marine Cleanser unit entered the room, the remaining zombie soldiers shot and killed three of the four men within moments. Since wed never created a contingency plan for this occurrence, the entry door to the room was still ajar during the cleansing. Before the backup cleanser team was able to secure the area, the ve zombie soldiers began rampaging through the corridors. We locked down that sector of the Silver Spring facility, but not before the zombies had destroyed the serum lab on oor delta-six. When our defenses at this point failed, we began an immediate evacuation of remaining personnel. I dont clearly recall those last few terrifying and chaotic moments, but I do recall grabbing a case of Serum IIA and the newly designed antidote wed created for the virus. This antidote, dubbed Omega-Six, hadnt been successfully tested, but all current data showed adequate anti-viral capabilities.

The Mindless Trait : A Better Look

Lets take a moment and make sure all the Braaainless Zombie Overlords have this new trait down-pat! The Mindless trait covers multiple aspects of zombie behavior including actions, unit cohesion, and the collective need to follow food.

John Tannenbaum had, at least by his own estimation, led a good life. He never stole anything, he never lied to his wife, and most importantly, never cheated on his taxes. As such, he couldnt see why he was stuck in his current dilemma. He looked in the rear mirror to see the line of trafc stuck behind him and, as he did so, saw the bead of sweat trickle down his ever growing forehead. Damn he swore to himself, Im going to be late to the ofce again. He was stuck in trafc on the 10 and had an important meeting later that morning with his boss. He knew that there was nothing he could be expected to do about the trafc jam, but his boss wasnt known for being all that understanding. To top it all off, the air conditioner in his old Pontiac had died earlier that week and it was topping ninety-ve degrees already at eight in the morning! With another muttered curse, John slammed his st into his steering wheel and let his horn y for several seconds before sighing and letting go. He grabbed the styrofoam cup containing his morning cup of coffee from the stopand-rob and put it to his lips. When nothing came out he looked sourly inside to see that it was empty. He cursed again and threw the cup out of his window. He heard a dull thunk and a yell of hey, you jerk! He looked to the left to see the driver of the car next to him, whose vehicle he hit with the cup hed just thrown, giving him an obscene gesture. Sorry, John said as he shrugged and went to tune his radio. The trafc hadnt budged an inch in over an hour so he wasnt surprised when the static from his radio cleared to the A.M. radio morning trafc report. Theres absolute gridlock on I-10 this morning folks so be prepared to spend some extra time getting to work today or nd an alternate route crackled the voice over the radio. No crap Sherlock, muttered Tannenbaum. THIS is why John E. Tannenbaum never bothered with the news. They never told you anything that you didnt already know. He hadnt bothered to turn on the television or radio news in years. He didnt care to know how crappy the world was today. He was just concerned with his own little part of the world. He leaned out the window and, against the smog clouded horizon, saw several dark forms walking in between the cars towards him. Now what the hell is this he thought as he picked up his cell phone to call work and let them know he was going to be late. He looked down at his phone to dial the number when he heard a scream from outside. He looked up to see a terrible commotion as several commuters ran past him, wide-eyed with terror. He pressed the send button on his phone and opened his car door to step out. He heard the receiver pick up on the other end and told his secretary about his predicament. As he did so he saw the source of the panicked crowd. Johns jaw went slack as he saw six people staggering towards him. Each persons clothes were tattered, torn, and covered in blood. As the gures drew closer he gasped in shock as he saw that each one was wasted and gaunt. One of the people, a large man in a ragged suit, was missing his arm; only a bloody stump remained. Another, a woman in a sun dress, had a gaping hole in her chest, revealing the bloody organs beneath the bones of her cracked ribcage. He dropped his phone to the ground and his arms hung limply by his side. All he could do was just gape as the gures approached. He recoiled in horror as the rst of the rabble drew near with its mouth contorted in endish hunger. The torn and bloodied sanitation worker reached out for him with a terrible moan. John put his hands up to support the staggering man. The stench of rotting esh emanating from the man made him choke back the bile that quickly rose in his throat. Jesus pal, what happened to you, John asked as the rest of the mob surrounded him. His concern quickly changed to abject fear however as he began to sense that all wasnt right with his current situation. The group of zombies grasped at his clothes and he was borne to the ground under the weight of their attack. He screamed frantically for help as the rst beast sunk its teeth into the soft esh of his balding scalp. He began kicking and ailing about as the monsters continued to bite him and tear the esh from his bones. It wasnt long though before the ghting stopped. John Tannenbaum wasnt going to make it to work that day, nor was he going to be able to respond to his secretary on the other end of the phone. He never heard her ask, JohnJohnare you there? John.

Zombies are, without a doubt, the single worst plague ever to strike mankind. Worse than the Red Death, Cholera, or any Pox virus, the zombie menace wipes out almost everything it touches and creates new carriers that roam the land. Mindless and hungry, these beasts can only be eliminated with massive damage to the brain. Even the smallest parts of a zombie can remain animated for quite some time after the head is severed; its is not unheard of to see a rotted, maggot covered arm clawing its way across the landscape. Amongst the zombies are some that, for some unknown reason, have grown to massive proportions. These brutes as they have come to be known, have all of the same horrifying traits as their smaller counterparts, yet can tear a living man limb from limb in its quest for a meal. Bile Zombies
Gregor Ivanovich crouched low behind the rubble wall outside of his Moscow apartment, or what was left of his apartment. He clutched the battered AK-47 to his chest and took a moment to regain his breath. He looked down at the weapon in detached amusement. Never before would he, a common Russian man, be able to hold such a weapon. That was reserved for the government and the crime lords. He laughed softly to himself with a bitterness borne of loss. Those days of harsh governmental control and rampant crime were gone. Those problems had been replaced by a new, more insidious threat. Those problems were before the outbreak. He glanced to his left upon hearing the approach of hurried footsteps. He wasnt concerned that one of the undead monsters was attacking; those footsteps sounded entirely different. They were slower and more ominous. You could almost hear dread when they approached. The dread of the zombies was palpable. It pervaded every waking moment. Dread became more than a feeling since the outbreak. It was a sight, a sound, a way of life. He sighed as his friend Peotre sat down in the dust beside him. They had been ghting for days in an attempt to leave the city limits. He glanced on the horizon and almost had to laugh out loud when he realized that, even after a weeks worth of ghting, they were right back where they started; pressed there by the hordes of undead scouring the city. He recalled a brief deathbed conversation with an elderly veteran of the Stalingrad ghting of the Second World War. He was amazed when the man told him that the ghting since the outbreak had been as vicious as it had during those most horric of times over sixty years ago. The old man had been only a boy then, but those memories were as vivid that day as the days he was living them. Peotre coughed and broke his ruminations. Well my friend, said the mountain of a man, looks like weve got a few minutes respite. Want some sardines? The man reached into a trouser pocket and pulled out a dented can of the heavily salted sh. It is not much, but its lunch. Gregor scanned the area quickly, condent in the cover the ruined building provided, and reach out a hand for a few of the sh. Thanks friend. He took off the thick glove that kept his hand warm in the brisk air of late autumn in Moscow, and gathered up his meager meal. He smiled at the man next to him and chuckled at the swath of bulky clothes covering him. Youre dressed like its the middle of winter Peotre, he said. Well, you know, replied the former police ofcer, its not like Ive got a closet to hang up all of my worldly possessions. Gregor knew all too well what the man meant. In days such as these, you carried every possession you owned on your back. He subconsciously reached out a hand to feel his pack sitting on the rocks nearby. One could not be too careful when supplies were so short. It also provides good protection from the bites too, noted Peotre. Shhhhh, hissed Ivanovich, suddenly wary, I heard something. Both men readied their weapons and cautiously spread out behind the cover of the ruined brick wall. Out of the corner of his vision, he caught movement. He turned to see four shambling forms approaching their position through the gloom. He knew immediately that the interlopers were zombies, but they were unlike any hed ever seen. Normally, zombies were gaunt, rotted caricatures of the people they once had been. These monsters were bloated, their bellies distended to impossible dimensions. He quickly moved his gaze from the zombies to Peotre. He saw the man squinting at the beasts and then he saw his friends eyes widen in alarm. He knew that the man had come to the same realization that these were not the usual threat. Ivanovich raised his rie to the threat and let y a burst of rounds striking the rst zombie in the chest. The creature recoiled and stumbled backwards. Peotre also red a hail of rounds into the same zombie but this time the monster exploded in a torrent of ichors that splattered onto the wall in front of them. Both men ducked for cover as the bile from the destroyed zombie coated the walls. Ivanovich ducked his head in terror as he heard a sound of sizzling coming from the masonry. He glanced up to see the brickwork dissolving under the gore. He cast a sidelong, terried glance at his friend, who had stood up once again and started unloading a magazine into this new threat. Ivanovich also stood and spun around to engage the enemy.

18

The remaining zombies spread out as they scrambled over the rocks leading to their fortied position. The lead zombie turned its eyeless gaze to Peotre and opened its gaping maw. Ivanovich looked on in horror as the beast started to heave at its midsection and spasmed as it thrust its decayed head in his friends direction. From the zombies mouth came a spray of bile that expanded in a cone towards his screaming comrade. The bile struck Peotre full-on in the chest. The man stumbled backwards through the debris and raised his rie. He looked down in confusion as the weapon failed to discharge its deadly payload. Ivanovich saw his friends look turn from confusion to terror when he saw the metal of the rie he was holding melting away under the vile liquid. Ivanovich squeezed the trigger of his own weapon and sprayed the approaching zombies with lead. He red until the magazine was empty and bent low to drop the spent unit and reload his last full mag. He looked up as he heard his friends scream turn from terror to agony. He saw the man ailing his arms as green-tinged steam rose from his thick woolen coat. The man ripped the garment from his torso and Ivanovich saw the esh underneath boiling away as the ichors ate into his esh. As Ivanovich sprinted to his friends aid, he saw the man collapse in a bloody heap. He knelt by the groaning mans side and gasped in shock as he saw the esh of Peotres chest dissolve, exposing the ribs and organs beneath. He reached out to wipe the uid from the mans body, but it was too late. He saw Peotres heart corroding as the bile ate its way through. With a scream of rage and sorrow, Ivanovich stood and spun to face their attackers. He heard a sound of heaving and saw a vomitous mass screaming through the air towards him. He lunged for cover

and briey saw the zombies spreading out around him. He reeled in pain as the bile hit home, covering his head and shoulder. He dug around in the debris, scrambling to nd his weapon. He thought he saw the dull wood of the ries stock and reached out his hand. That stock was the last thing he saw before the eyes melted from his head.

Smoke and re rose from the blasted out shell of the building across the street from his position. The last mortar barrage had taken out the bulk of the local grocery store where a large horde of zombies had been sighted an hour before. Luutnantti Mikko Lipponen smiled at the thought of the carnage they had just visited upon the monstrous army approaching their position. He reached towards his Kranaatinheitin 81 KRH 71 Y light infantry mortar and patted the metal ring tube with pride. Good job again my old friend, he said. He glanced around the ad hoc fortications he and his unit had assembled. They were condent that the emplacement would protect them for quite some time from even the heaviest of zombie attacks. They spent time reinforcing the masonry walls to counter the viscous vomiting of the bile zombies they had encountered the week prior. They had seen those attacks rot through ak vests and even a thin brick wall. They lost four good men that day. They werent about to fall for that little trick again. He stood and looked out of the small ring port for his mortar. He saw around a dozen zombies staggering in the street toward their position. He smiled as he saw the rotting torsos of over ten more clawing their way across the rubblestrewn pavement. That last volley had done some damage. Ok men, prepare for this next little attack. Theres a handful coming our way. Ries ready! he shouted to the rest of his unit. With an almost jovial manner, the soldiers under his command condently took ring positions around the makeshift bunker. He held their re until the last moment to ensure maximum effect. A zombie could be notoriously difcult to kill if you didnt get a good head-shot. He wanted to make every round count. Fire! he shouted as the rst zombie made its way to the exterior wall. The clack-clack of gunre erupted and several of the zombies went down during the initial salvo. As Lipponen turned to give the next ring order, one of the zombies reached in through his ring port and grasped at his jacket. He spun and red a round directly into the zombies face, splattering its rotting head all over the few zombies pressing hard against its back in a desperate attempt to engage him He stepped back from the ring port, the blood of the monster dripping down his cheek. He laughed to his men as they nished off the last of the attackers in a withering hail of gunre. One of his men handed him a dirty cloth. Here you go Luutnantti, said the too-young soldier, youre a messy eater it seems. The men in his unit shared a laugh and began settling down for a moments rest. Lipponen wiped the gore from his face and tossed the towel aside. He turned to assess the situation in the street outside when he felt an unusual surge of pain in his stomach. He clutched at his midsection and staggered backwards. He stumbled when the back of his legs hit an old desk and found himself falling on top of it, his men rushing to his side Whats the matter Luutnantti, asked his medic. I dont know. I dont feel too well all of a sudden, he coughed out as his head started to spin. He felt the sweat beading up on his forehead and could tell that his temperature was rapidly rising. His vision started to blur and he felt a sharp burning sensation running up his arm from his left hand. He weakly lifted his arm so that he could see the cause. Lipponens hand had a ragged wound on the knuckle of his index nger. It only appeared to be a scratch, but the pain was tremendous. He briey recalled the zombie grasping at his arm and remembered feeling a claw dig into his hand, but just for a moment. He looked in amazement as dark tendrils rapidly spread from the wound and up his arm. The medic ripped open the sleeve of the commanding ofcer and gasped in horror. The Luutnanttis arm was quickly turning from a sickening purple color to a morbid black. As the medic began digging in his rst aid kit, Lipponen felt the bile rise in his throat and his stomach muscles contract. He turned his head and heaved a bloody mass of vomit and tissue onto the oor. He railed in agony as his entire body wracked with strong, bone breaking seizures. Lipponen heard the snap of one of his vertebrae as the spasm tore through his entire body. Chaos ensued within the bunker. The medic began tearing Lipponens uniform off and initiated treatment; for what, the medic was unsure, but had to do something. Several of the soldiers rmly held Lipponen down on the desk as the

20

medic thrust a syringe deep into the ofcers arm. Lipponen struggled in agony against the press of his men, but rapidly found his strength failing. As the darkness fell upon him, he faintly heard his medic say, Ive never seen an infection travel this fast The unit of soldiers stood grimly around the lifeless body of their fallen leader, each man taking a moment to reect on the deeds of this brave hero. Their mournful silence, however, was broken as they heard a roar from outside of the bunker. The men were so focused on the cause of the commotion that they never saw the eyes of their late Luutnantti snap open, nor the body of the fallen soldier rise from the desk and stumble towards them.

Soldier Zombies
Corporal Deacon Deke Parker eased up the talus slope towards the deserted township. He was under orders to observe the long evacuated township of Dunham, assess the Z-threat levels, and report back. With this in mind, Deke had spent the better portion of the past week watching the Zzone from a distance. Hed learned that you cant expect a lot of movement from zombies if there werent fresh bodies around for them to eat. After four days though, he gured hed of seen some movement by now if there were any of the rotten buggers around. Corporal Parker casually raised his right arm and motioned for his Staff Sergeant, Juan Quinones to advance. Quinones low crawled up the slope to Parkers side, taking care to keep his M-16 at the ready. See anything Corporal? inquired the Staff Sergeant in his usual gravelly tone. Not a damn thing Sarge. Good, thats what I like to hear, said Quinones as he turned his head to the side and motioned for the rest of the squad to approach. Once the team crested the ridge they saw up-close the destruction that had been wrought upon the little town of Dunham. Blood smears stained the faade of every building, many of the buildings were severely burned, and there seemed to be no inhabitants except the rolling tumbleweeds. The most disturbing thing, however, were the vast number of bullet holes around the place. Hed been told that Dunham was mostly evacuated prior to any major zombie activity in the area and that only a few stragglers even encountered the monstrosities. PFC Johnson advanced to the front and stood by Quinones. The thermal imagers were good to detect any living presences in the area, but zombies that had turned even a day prior wouldnt show up. Got something Sarge, said the soldier, two clicks ahead behind some rubble. Its a faint signal, and small probably a kid. The squad advanced down the main street in a fast but tactical sweep until they approached a burned out husk of what used to be a small house. Quinones walked around a charred outer wall and saw a small girl, curled into a fetal position, lying on the ground. The large framed man rushed through the rubble to the girls side. As he approached the girl recoiled in horror. Ssshhhh its ok, were not gonna hurt you, he said in as reassuring voice as a man like he could muster. Just as he nished the sentence, the crack of gunre erupted from behind the squad. COVER! he heard Private LeBlanc scream. Each man rushed to nd a piece of cover and Quinones hunkered down over the cowering girl. At the top of his lungs he yelled out into the street, Dammit peoplewere the good guys! His scream was met only with more gunre. After this recent volley Quinones realized that the clack of the automatic gunre was distinctively from an M16; military grade hardware. Crap boys thats military out there. Wilsonget me H-. He was interrupted by the explosion of a small mortar round to the front of the building. He heard one of his men scream in agony and then the crash of a body to the ground. Quinones immediately called for his squad to return re. These guys might be military, but they certainly werent friendlies. As Quinones advanced to the front edge of the ruined house, he caught his rst glimpse of the enemy. He saw ve gures in the dusty gloom of a storefront across the street. Each was wearing Army issued BDUs and they were spread out in a textbook tactical reght array. He blanched as he saw the face of the lead soldier. The mans face was taught and the skin stretched thin across a skeletal face. One eye socket was empty, save for some dried puss on the cheek. Most of the esh from the soldiers neck was torn apart, revealing a dried and bloodied mess beneath. The soldiers left leg hung limply behind and was bent at an impossible angle for a living man to tolerate. Quinones had never fooled himself into thinking that a soldier couldnt be turned, but never before had he seen turned soldiers act differently than any other zombie. These zombies were ring weapons, not shambling forward with the desperate hunger for esh! These zombies were maintaining a solid ring line in cover. This didnt bode well. This didnt bode well at all. Dammit boys, those are zombies he screamed as the withering hail of gunre started anew. WASTE EM! His squad opened re with every ounce of weaponry they had. Quinones started to move around the left ank of his defensive position when he felt the ground beneath him erupt with a blast. He was launched off of his feet and into

22

an adjacent wall. The breath was knocked hard from his chest as he struck the brick faade of the house next door and he struggled to maintain consciousness as he slid to the ground. Grunting with pain, Quinones lifted his bloodied head to see that most of his team, as well as the little girl, had been caught in the horric blast. He tasted the iron tint of blood in the corner of his lips and began propping himself up to ready his weapon. Through the dust of the explosion, Quinones saw ve dark gures emerge. Each was staggering haphazardly over the debris and each was leveling an M16 directly at him. Rage lled the Sergeants mind as he raised his weapon and squeezed the trigger. A three round burst erupted from the muzzle and one of the zombies fell to the ground with a sickening squish. He calmly but quickly reached into his pack for another magazine as the zombies advanced. Just as the magazine clicked home, he saw the shadows fall over him. He lifted his gaze into the dead eyes of what used to be a U.S. soldier. Poor bastard-thought Quinones as the rst zombie fell upon him. He punched and kicked and screamed with all of his might, but he knew inside that it was only a matter of time. His last thoughts were the horror of rising from the dead to join this macabre shadow of his sworn brethren.

Its wasnt long after the outbreak that it became clear that the advanced training of some soldiers carried over into undeath. These zombies retained some rudimentary tactical abilities from their former lives and can even re weapons, albeit with less accuracy. Zombie Abomination
Monica Banks ran as fast as she could through the burned out husk of what previously had been a shopping mall. As she climbed over an overturned display case she felt her husbands hands slip from her own. She turned back to help him over the obstacle, as he had broken his leg a week prior. She put down the shotgun shed found and reached out to him. As she did, she saw his chest lurch forward and his eyes grow wide in terror. She leaned towards him as a bony spike erupted from his chest and sprayed his life blood over her face. MARK! she screamed as his head rolled forward. Marks lifeless body was ripped open as a second long spike wrapped around his body from behind and eviscerated the man. Monica stumbled back onto the display case and fumbled around for the shotgun. As she grasped the wooden stock of the Remington, she saw the dim light reect upon the twisted body of a grotesquely mutated beast. The vile being was clearly a zombie; she had seen enough of those to know the undead when she saw one. This beast, however, was like none shed ever seen. The height of a bear, but lean, the beast stood on two twisted and rotting legs that ended in sharp talons. The esh around the bony ribs had rotted enough to reveal the blackened, festering organs within. The creature grasped at her with the claws at the end of each of its two long scarred arms. Its twisted maw gaped open to reveal rows of sharp brown teeth covered in the rotting esh of its victims. Monica pulled the shogun around and leveled it at the chest of this abomination. She trembled as the two long articulated spikes withdrew from the crumpled body of her husband. Each spike, coming from the back of the monster, was over six feet long and was topped with a razor sharp protrusion of bone. Monica screamed as she pulled the trigger of the shotgun. Beyond the ery ash of the muzzle she saw the rst shot hit home and the beast staggered backwards. She cycled the grip of the gun and squeezed the trigger again, this time hitting the beast in the face. Blackened gore spattered over the walls behind the monster as its head disintegrated in an explosion of esh and bone. She cycled the shotgun again and stood as the twitching body of the abomination slumped to the oor. Breathing hard, Banks staggered to where her husband lay lifeless on the oor. She knew she should be weeping, but could not feel tears welling in her eyes. The tears had dried up months before when she lost both of her children to the zombie horde that had ransacked their suburban neighborhood. Monica looked down and saw that, while damaged, her husbands body was still intact. She saw the bite mark from the beast upon his shoulder. She calmly leveled the shotgun at the head of her lover. Monica Banks had seen both of her children rise as monstrosities after the attack and was not about to let her husband meet that same horrid fate. She squeezed the trigger, spent a moment in prayer, and turned away. The shotgun hung low as she began running down the corridor of the mall and, for the rst time in months, felt wetness as the tears streamed down her cheeks.

For some reason, certain zombies have their body structures terribly mutated by the virus. Their ribs grow and twist from their backs to form long appendages that end in razor sharp talons, which they use with lethal efciency. Their overall mass increases two-fold, making them massive and cunning hazards for humans struggling to survive. camera out of the open helicopter door. The helicopter righted itself and Koslow looked up front to see Pete Winton wiping the sweat from his brow. Wow Pete! Thats some damn good ying! Thanks, came the grunted reply from the cockpit. Koslow regained his composure and refocused his camera on the scene below. Hed been in some pretty tight spots in the past, but Pete was one of the best pilots out there. Koslow gured that Petes two tours in Iraq in Desert Storm qualied him for pretty much any ying the news could send his way. As Koslow gained a good frame around a group of Marines launching a counter-offensive from a liquor store down the street, he caught a blur of motion through the camera lens. He was able to make out a ying swarm of brown blobs emerging from the rubble and engulng the embattled Marines. He saw the tracer rounds from the Marines weapons arc in random panicked directions as they tried to ght off whatever had attacked them from the air. He made some adjustments on his camera and brought the image into better focus. What the hell? What was that Bill, he heard Pete cry from the cockpit. Bats. What? Bats ,Pete, bats. Whaddaya mean bats? Koslow didnt reply. He was far too entranced by the scene below. The bats were also stricken with whatever caused the human dead to rise. Their fur was matted and he thought he could make out areas of gore and bone as well, and while he wasnt a biologist, he thought that the zombie bats seemed much larger than their living counterparts. The ying monsters screeched and wailed as they were buffeted by the turbulence from the rotors of the JetRanger. Koslow saw the swarm of bats disengage from the thinning squad of Marines and take to an erratic ight pattern in the sky above the fray. He struggled to refocus on the swarm and couldnt gure out why. He dropped the camera view port away from his eye and tried looking the old-fashioned way. As his eyes took in the swarm he scrambled back in horror

Roger that, was the shouted reply from the cameraman seated in the passenger compartment. Bill Koslow, a ten year veteran of the business thought hed seen just about everything on earth that was newsworthy. The sight below took him completely off guard. Jesus, Pete, look at the size of that mob. The JetRanger dipped sharply toward the street to get a better look at the ghting. A swarm of what appeared to be thousands of zombies was rampaging over the streets. A small group of maybe one hundred Marines was holed up in a shopping mall at the end of the main road over which Pete ew. Fires raged from the debris that was created as the Marines continually shelled the horde of walking corpses. Several of the res had spread and engulfed an eight story apartment building. The conagration consumed zombies by the dozens but more appeared from every nook and cranny in the area. Koslow aimed his camera at the carnage below and struggled to obtain a focus that was worth airing on the upcoming broadcast. Dammit, Pete shouted Koslow, cant you keep this thing steady. Im doing the best I can the thermals from the re are causing a friggin huge updraft. Shes giving all shes got. The calamitous scene on the streets below continued to rage as Pete tried to steady the bird. He choked up on the cyclic and started to gain altitude. Sorry Bill, he cried. I cant keep her steady that close to the re. Hope you got a good zoom lens. Koslow was too engrossed in his work to reply. The image he saw through the lens went in and out of focus as he struggled to get a good shot. He heard a loud explosion from his left and turned to see the origin of the noise. He saw a ery mushroom cloud erupting from what was left of a roadside gas station. The re apparently had spread to the underground tanks. The helicopter shuddered as the shock wave from the blast spread. Koslow braced himself against the sudden movement and almost dropped his

26

as he realized that the swarm of zombie bats was headed directly for the helicopter. GO, PETE, GO! he screamed toward the cockpit. Huh? asked the bewildered pilot. Koslow slapped Pete on the shoulder and pointed out of the window. The veteran pilot looked to his left and saw the brown mass of ying death headed straight towards his helicopter. CRAP! he yelled to no one in particular, and immediately pulled the helicopter away from the battle below. The helicopter gained altitude slowly; too slowly to outdistance the bats. Both men were suddenly engulfed in a urry of motion, stench, and fangs. Koslow was unable to hang on to his camera. It fell from the door and continued down to the street below. He swatted frantically as more bats than he could count began attacking him from every side. He felt a large zombie bat land on his back and claw its way up to his neck. He yelped in panic and ung himself backwards trying to crush the bat against the seat behind him. He felt a sickening squish and heard the crunch of decaying bone but the bat kept crawling up his shirt and over his collar. Koslow caught a brief glimpse into the cockpit of a beleaguered Pete Winton in the same horrifying predicament. His view was instantly screened by another bat landing squarely in his face. He gagged as he felt the beasts rancid claw slip into his gaping mouth. As he was trying to hold back his vomit he felt the helicopter lurch to the side. He began to slip from his seat and momentarily wished hed strapped himself in with a seatbelt. As he spun onto his stomach and tried to grasp at the seat to keep from falling from the helicopter, he felt the fangs of the attacker on his back bury in the soft esh on the nape of his neck. He winced in pain as he felt the needle-sharp teeth pierce deep into his esh and lodge in the vertebrae just under his skull. He screamed in horror as the cold chill began to spread up his neck and into his brain. He ung both of his arms backwards in a desperate attempt to dislodge the bat from his neck. As he did, he let go of the seat and slid toward the open door. In a complete panic, he lunged wildly at the safety rail near his left arm. As his hands began to close over the steel pipe, he again felt the stinging pain of fangs dig into his esh; this time on the back of his hand. He instinctively recoiled from the pain and swatted at the bats near his hand. He was completely engulfed in bats as he continued the slide from the rapidly descending helicopter. He continued to struggle as he was ung from the JetRanger. Koslow was able to catch a glimpse of the helicopter, and Pete Winton, crash sidelong into one of the buildings lining the street. As he ailed wildly at the air and the bats still engulng him, he saw the helicopter explode in a torrent of

re and debris. His last thoughts were of sheer, unbridled terror as he plummeted into the asphalt street below. Bill Koslow died on impact, but that did not stop the zombies, or the zombie bats, from feasting upon him.

Not even bats were immune to the Outbreak. Despite Outbreak. their diminutive size, these undead creatures swarm over their victims with lethal precision.

Walter Scott was deep in regretful thought as he pushed his 4x4 hard down the rocky overgrown road. He instinctively reached to turn up the volume on his radio, but withdrew his hand when he realized that there hadnt been a radio broadcast in this region in over seven months. Damn, the little things die hard, he mused as the truck bounced over a particularly large rock. He looked into the rear view mirror to check and make sure the rest of the hunting party was still in the bed. Yup, Scott and Tom always could do the offroading. Dang Walt, laughed the wiry twenty-year old man in the back. Tom just about took a digger on that one. Yeah, you maniac, its bad enough the zombies are tryin to get us, now youre trying to kill me out here in the middle of nowhere, chipped in Tom. Walt laughed softly as he steered the truck off of the dirt road and into a clearing. He, being the eldest in the group, was in charge of keeping these boys on task and ensuring that they came back to camp with some fresh meat for the families that had found refuge in the clearing by Tenant Creek Falls. The vehicle rolled to a stop and Walt stepped out onto the soft grass. Alright boys, keep your pants on. I got you here didnt I? he quipped. The three men gathered their gear from the back of the king cab and started to plan for the hunt. Theres likely to be some deer around here, if not moose, said Scott. Tom exhaled sharply, a moose would be nice lots of meat, even if its oily. They continued on in silence as they packed up and started into the thick wood line. Theyd been on a dozen of these hunting forays before and knew what each other were capable of and good at. Walt, having seen more than four decades of life, took the center of the line while the two younger men fanned out to the side to ush out any potential game. The walked quietly through the brush for over an hour until they came to a large clearing just as the sun was starting its descent. There had been a heavy rain the night before and the warm sun of the afternoon had cooked the moisture on the foliage into a ne haze over the tall grass. Walt stopped at the edge of the tree line and spotted Tom to his far left and Scott just about fty paces to his right. Each knew to take some time before entering

Zombie Beast

the glade since this was a prime spot for game to gather and no one wanted to spook off a potential weeks worth of food.

Walt heard the usual cluck-cluck of Tom trying to get his attention. He looked to his left and saw the hefty former high school quarterback pointing to a small rise in the middle of the clearing. Walt squinted through the haze and caught the dark form of a rather large animal standing in the waning sunlight. He drew his old binoculars out of his vest pocket and lifted them to his eyes. What he saw took him completely by surprise. Walts eyes widened behind the lenses as he watched the distant form of a rhinoceros standing in the dimming light. In his life before the zombies, Walt was a reghter, not a biologist, but he was pretty sure that rhinos werent native to upper state New York. Must have escaped from a zoo, he thought, still, there must be a ton of meat on that sucker. He motioned for both of his hunting partners to slowly fan out and advance. Walt had watched enough National Geographic to know that there were few animals on earth more dangerous than a mad rhino. It would be best to divert its attention and hope that their hunting ries could take it down. He made his way into the clearing and watched Scott and Tim do the same. He estimated the distance at about two hundred yards, not a terribly tough shot, but a little close considering that he didnt think a single shot would take down the beast. Walt watched as the other two men settled into ring positions. Once they were in place, he took a knee and raised his rie. He had become a somewhat capable hunter of late, but hed never taken down more than a juvenile black bear. In his humble estimation, an animal like this was way out of his league. He brought the rie to bear and took a steady aim at the rhino. He remembered something a copbuddy had once told him about shooting to the center mass of the target. He focused on the dark shape through the mist and breathed in. He exhaled halfway out and held before squeezing the trigger. The 223 round exited his Winchester Super Shadow with a loud report. He immediately began to take a second aim at the rhino. If Walt had taken the time to inspect the beast through his scope before shooting, he might have noticed that this particular rhinoceros didnt quite look like the ones hed seen on television. He might have noticed the dull grey tone to its skinwhat was left of the skin anyway. Walt might have noticed that a large portion of the left haunch of the

28

beast was hanging loosely to one side, exposing the rotted esh amongst its ribcage. He might have noticed that the rhino wasnt grazing on the ample grass in the clearing. Walt might have done a lot of things As he leveled the rie for his second shot, he heard the reports of his companions ries sound out through the mist. He took a slower breath this time, determined to make this next shot, likely his last shot judging the speed at which the rhino was charging him, count. He peered through his scope at the rampaging form of the animal. He, as he usually did, took a good look at the eyes of the creature; it was somewhat of a sentimental thing for Walter. It was only then that he realized that one of the creatures eyes was missing. It was only then that he realized that large portions of the rhino appeared to have been chewed upon. Walt stumbled back in terror. Within seconds the zombie rhinoceros was upon him. He dropped his rie in the panic and could only throw up his arms in futile defense as the beast lowered its rotting head to strike him full on in the chest. The concussion of the impact was unlike anything Walter had ever experienced; it felt as if he had been hit with a tree trunk. He dimly heard his own scream of agony as he ew through the air for what seemed an eternity. By the time he hit the ground with a bone-crushing thud, the zombie rhino was once again bearing down on him. This time, Walt didnt even have the energy to put his hands up in defense. He could only grunt as the rhino stomped down on his left leg, pulverizing it. As he started to loose consciousness, his last thoughts as the rhino was beginning to tear at his esh were that he never knew rhinoceros to be meat eaters.

Zombie Hounds
Norma Mason gasped as she watched the six oclock newscast. The square jawed anchor grimly reported another strange occurrence of the dead seen stumbling from inside of the city morgue. The emergency services of the city were stretched to their limits in this crisis and most people were locked inside of their homes. Norma felt safe locked in the county animal shelter with the stray cats and dogs. The heavy concrete walls and metal door would do more than protect her from the catastrophe outside. This past Monday she had restocked the small kitchen in the shelter and a large delivery of kibble and medical supplies the week prior would ensure that she could care for the furry little darlings in her charge. The citys public health ofcials were at a loss to explain this recent series of events. The news broadcast went on to report that hospitals all over the eastern seaboard were lling up with victims showing signs of fever, nausea, and delirium. These hapless souls would die and then, within hours or days, return to a blasphemous mirror of life. At rst the victims were sedated and treated, but that was before a nurse was bitten terribly by one of these monsters. Within hours she too complained of the same symptoms as her patient. It was then that people started to realize that this disease was contagious. Norma was pulled from her ruminations and back into the present as the reporter on the news said that the National Guard was being brought in to assist the citys desperate re, medical, and police services. She smiled as she saw the televised image of the Army helicopters disgorging hundred of soldiers onto the streets of the beleaguered city. Thatll show em, thought the rounded woman as she turned to heat her microwaveable dinner. She pressed the start button and smiled in anticipation of the meal to come. She turned her head to the left in response to a banging sound from the corridor housing the animal cages. Now what are those buggers up to? thought Norma as she turned off the television and started down the hall. She hesitated as she reached out for the latch securing dog cage room. Thats odd, she mused, the dogs should be barking mad right now. Its well past their supper time. Norma opened the door with a smile. Hello my pretties, time for ddinner. Her voice trailed off as she looked in horror at the dogs in the cages. Each ones fur was matted and dirty. Their ribs were showing under loose esh and all were frothing at the mouth. Several of the canines had large wounds on their sides and necks where the other dogs had obviously attacked them. She recoiled as she saw that three of the strays were nothing more than piles of half-eaten esh and bone on the concrete oor of the largest pen. Norma dropped the keys to the food room and the only thing she could hear over the sounds of the keys skittering across the oor was her own heart beating in a urry. One of the hounds turned its gaze upon her. She cried out in alarm

30

when she realized that the dog, a German Shepard, had only one eye, the other hanging loosely out of its socket by the veins. She backed out of the room and into the dimly lit corridor. She turned to run to her ofce to call 911 but halted in her tracks when a large shadow appeared in the doorway. She cried in terror as the rotting corpse of a Bull Mastiff stepped silently in between her and the phone. She turned to run but her way was blocked by several diseased dogs standing across the hall. She reached out defensively with her hands in front of her and began sobbing. Please please not menot mommy, she begged. The zombie hounds didnt listen.

The Cameroon sun burned overhead as Tebogo Atagana nished chopping up the tubers that were the afternoon snack for the Patas monkeys calling the Mvog Betsi Zoo home. He squinted as he looked up from the food prep table and watched the troop of monkeys sitting in the late day sun. He noted that the male of the troop was lying down in the tall grass at the base of an acacia tree. Thats odd, Ngozi usually sits on the rock atop the hill watching his women, Ill have to check on him. Atagana completed his task, lled a bucket with the monkeys food, and walked across the eld to the Patas enclosure. As he approached the troop, he felt a growing sense of concern over the agitation he sensed in the animals. This Patas troop was usually fairly relaxed during the hottest hours of the African afternoon, but today they screeched and chattered at his approach. Several of the females hugged their young close as he walked past, their eyes unusually wary. They were always watchful, but it was typically the curiosity of any monkey when the keepers entered the expansive enclosure. In all of his years researching the Patas at the zoo, hed never seen such unusual behavior. He spread the chopped tubers over some freshly scattered rushes and walked to the male, Ngozi. As he made his way through the tall grass he noticed an unusually large number of ies circling over the monkey. Not feeling well today my old friend, he said in warm, soft tones, well have to see to that wont we. Ngozi turned his head weakly at Ataganas approach. The monkey attempted to lift a limp arm in the mans direction and opened its mouth wide, letting loose a weak and gurgling chirp. Atagana was horried to see a large open wound on the side of the animal, grubs gnawing at the oozing esh around an exposed rib. Atagana knelt beside the monkey and looked up into the acacia overhead. Did you have a fall last night Ngozi? he asked, Ive never heard of a healthy monkey falling from a tree. Lets get you into the clinic for a look. He gently picked up the injured Patas and began the walk back to the main medical facility. As he passed the female Patas monkeys and their young he was shocked to see their unusual reaction; they ran screaming from him as he strode past their afternoon haunts. With a mounting sense of concern, Atagana left the enclosure and went to meet the zoos veterinary staff.

Zombie Monkeys

He laid the near comatose male on the examination table and picked up the phone. He dialed the main ofce and, upon hearing the veterinarian was on her way over, went back to comfort the monkey. After a few moments he heard the click of the door opening behind him. He turned his head slightly to see Brianna Westerly, the zoo veterinarian, approaching. Hi Brianna, I found Ngozi lying under the large acacia. The troop is agitated today; Ive never seen them like this. I dont know if he fell from the tree, but I doubt it. It looks to me like he was bitten. Hi Tebogo, she replied with worry in her voice. She had worked with the man for many years, knew his deep compassion for the animals in their care, and had never seen his face so laden with worry as it was now. She placed her hand on the belly of the Patas monkey and softly said, Hey Ngozinot feeling well today? She smiled at the animal as she reached onto the shelf adjacent to the exam table and withdrew a stethoscope. Well get you back on your feet in no time. After a brief initial examination of the monkeys vital signs, her brow furrowed and she bent low to inspect the wound. She brushed the maggots off the wound and checked the area. Most concerning to her was the animals lack of response to her touching the wound. This is denitely a bite mark Tebogo, she said, and it looks like another Patas did it. Atagana, hesitant to leave, turned to Westerly, Brianna, Ill leave this to you; I want to go check on the rest of the troop and see if I can see what happened. As he walked out of the clinic, he ran over the events of the last few days in his mind. He knew that the Patas were matriarchal, but they rarely became so violent with each other. Sometimes a female might attack a male if he threatened her offspring, but Ngozi was a very laid-back male and hed never seen the monkey act aggressively towards babies in the troop. After about an hour in the Patas enclosure, he heard Westerly scream from across the eld between the lab and the exhibit. He turned and started to jog back and then heard a metallic crashing sound that he presumed must be the table. He sprinted to the door, ung it open, and was horried to see the veterinarian cowering in a corner, clutching her left arm to her side. What happened? he asked in a booming but concerned voice.

32

N-Ngozi. He bit me. He bit me Tebogo. The keeper knew that there was more to it than that. Everyone working in the zoo had been bitten by an agitated animal at one point or another during their career and Westerly was no exception. He scanned the room and saw the previously comatose monkey leaping around the facility, screeching and wailing. He turned back to Westerly, well get you cleaned up and bandaged. He reached down to help her to her feet and she began crying. Brianna, its ok. At least Ngozi seems to be feeling a bit better now. Itll be alright. Its not my arm Tebogo. Its not my arm. He was dead Tebogo... He was dead, she said, her voice trailing off as she grasped her wounded arm tighter, the blood oozing from between her ngers. What do you mean, he was dead? the keeper asked. The veterinarian pulled her gaze from the rampaging monkey and looked Atagana in the eyes. Ngozi was dead on the table my friend. His heart and breathing stopped. He died shortly after you left, Tebogo. I started to inspect the wound more closely and prepare him for necropsy and then he suddenly leaped up from the table and attacked me. Are you sure he was dead? he asked incredulously. Yes. Im positive. He didnt have a pulse or respirations for over thirty minutes. Then the attack.

Tebogo Atagana raised his gaze from Westerly to the howling primate. He barely had time to see the animal leaping from the counter and towards his face. He didnt have any time to stop the animal from sinking its large canine teeth into his shoulder.

We used to think they were cute. We used to enjoy seeing them in the circus. Not any more. The virus affected all primates equally, but most monkey species retained their quickness and agility. Too bad they didnt stay cute. UNIT SIZE: Five (5) Zombie Monkeys POINTS COST: 100 RARITY: One per three Zombie Horde Units.

Lieutenant Alex Burton awoke to nd himself lying under a heap of rubble, water dripping steadily onto his forehead from some unseen location overhead. He vaguely remembered the last few days of constant and brutal ghting against a large zombie incursion, but many of the details were sketchy at best. He remembered leading his platoon into the city the week prior and rapidly being overwhelmed by the sheer number of zombies present in the streets. As the fog in his brain lifted slightly, he remembered watching several of his men dragged down under the horde of rotting esh. He had no idea if he was the only one left alive. Burton turned his head and felt something sticky. He lifted his right hand to nd copious amounts of dried blood caked in his hair and down his neck and thought it odd that he didnt have a massive headache, but gured hed feel it once he got up and moving.

Zombie Super Soldier

hunger he had experienced before eating the rank meat from the townhouse. Damn, Im hungry, he thought. He scanned the wrecked street and his eyes fell upon the shell of a ruined grocery store. Ignoring the limp from his right leg, he made his way down the two city blocks to the store. The automatic doors had been forced inwards and lay broken on the tile oor inside. He navigated those obstacles and went to the butchers counter. He made note of the power outage and briey wondered why he wasnt having a hard time seeing his surroundings, but this musing was quickly replaced by his soldiers instincts as he heard movement off to his left beyond the counter. Burton unslung the M16 from his shoulder and cautiously made his way around the shattered glass case. As he passed, he made depressing note of the lack of food on display in the case. Burton rounded the corner saw the dark silhouette of a ragged dog snifng around the oor under a nearby chopping block. He dropped his guard slightly and the dog turned to watch him, the animals tail wagging excitedly. He bent to one knee and the dog approached cautiously, snifng the air as he neared the lieutenant. Burton was always a dog-person. He thought of his own bulldog at home with his wife and reached out towards the stray mutt before him. As his hand neared the dogs head, the hackles on the canine stood erect and the dog dropped his head low, growling and baring its teeth. Burton, without knowing why, lunged forward and grabbed the dog. The animal yelped in pain as the soldier seized it and pulled it near. So hungry, he thought, so very hungry Without a moments hesitation, Burton tore into the animal with his bare teeth. The dog snapped back at him as its blood spilled warmly into Burtons mouth. The canines teeth dug sharply into Burtons cheek, tearing off a large portion of his jaw muscle in the process. Burton wrapped his thick arms around the dogs neck, and with a quick jerk, ended the dogs struggling. Burton wasnt sure how long he feasted upon the esh and blood of the stray dog but time wasnt a concern for him. He was so hungry. After lling his gut, Burton retrieved the M16 he had dropped in the rush to seize the dog. He carried it at the ready as he made his way through the rest of the store. He was vaguely aware of the warm, sticky blood coating his chin, cheek, and chest and made his way to the restroom to clean himself up. He stepped over the skeleton of a long deceased grocer and approached the sink. He cupped his hands under the faucet and lled them with water, only dimly aware of the large chunks of esh missing from his forearms and hands. He splashed the warm water over his face and raised his gaze to the mirror before him. He stared at his own visage for some time, reecting on

Summoning all of his strength, Burton grasped the large piece of timber pinning him to the rubble pile and heaved. After a few moments of digging, he released his left leg from the pile and scanned his surroundings. It seemed to Burton that he had been lying in what used to be the kitchen. As he surveyed the room, he realized how hungry he was. It seemed to him as if he hadnt eaten in months. He stumbled through the debris to the refrigerator, which had been knocked over during the ghting. He ripped open the door and looked inside. Underneath the spilled milk and condiments he saw a butchers wrap. He picked up the package and ripped through the wax paper. Inside he found a steak that had apparently been sitting in the warmed refrigerator for several days. He initially recoiled from the stench of the rotting meat but reconsidered as the rumbling in his stomach reminded him of his hunger. With a near animalistic abandon, Burton stuffed the rancid steak into his mouth. Surprisingly, he found the rotted taste of the meat to be unusually satisfying. After he nished his ad hoc meal, Alex Burton walked into the street. He found that he was limping severely but felt no accompanying pain from his leg. He glanced down and saw that his right femur had been broken and the bone was protruding through the torn esh of his thigh and the fabric of his BDUs. This isnt right, he worried. Why arent I in excruciating pain right now what the hell? Burton could chock up a lot to the adrenaline of a soldier but, as the veteran of countless zombie battles and the war in Iraq, he knew there was only so much pain ones own endorphins could mask. As he felt the panic rise in his chest, it was quickly replaced by the same ravenous

34

the past few hours. As he did so, he became increasingly aware of his current condition. He ran his trembling ngers over his destroyed cheek. He could feel every cell on his scarred face, each touch bringing in a sense of heightened awareness he had never experienced before. He was at once awed and horried as he pushed his ngers deeper under the skin of his face to feel the bone of his jaw beneath. He caught a glance of the shredded meat from his right forearm. He dropped his gaze to the arm and wondered why it didnt hurt even though he could see both his radius and ulna under the muscle that was torn away from the bone and hanging loosely at the wrist. Burton ripped off his BDU top and it was then that he saw the massive hole in the fabric covering his left shoulder. He instantly saw the bite mark, instantly recognized the bluish black streaks radiating from the deep wound caused by rotting teeth. He had seen these bites countless times before. He knew then what had happened to him. The events of that last fateful battle rushed back into his memory with alarming clarity. He saw every detail, could remember every smell. He could even taste the fear of his men in the air as they fell one-by-one to the zombie horde. He recalled the last few moments of his own consciousness as he fought viciously against several zombies on the second oor of the townhouse where he awoke several hours prior. He saw with perfect clarity the grenade he pulled from his pack and remembered how he threw the explosive into the fray. He saw the large brute of a zombie charge him and felt again the tearing of his own shoulder as the brutes attack hit home. He saw the ash of the grenade out of the corner of his vision and remembered falling into the darkness of the now ruined house below. As Burton reconstructed those last few hours of his life, he began feeling a rage welling in his chest, rage and hunger. Raising his rie, he thrust the butt end of the stock into the

glass, shattering the mirror and his psyche at the same time. He stalked out of the bathroom and the grocery store looking for a way to channel his anger. He was furious at his own men for leaving him to this terrifying fate. He knew that his wife would move on once she was told that his unit never returned from combat. He needed to show them what they were doing to him. Hed let them know what it meant to abandon Lieutenant Alexander Burton to a fate worse than death.

As the hunger increased, I realized that I was able to control it, even if only a bit. For some reason, Ive retained most of my memories; the clearest of them all are the painful ones. We heard of the spread of the virus from the Silver Spring facility and found that the Omega-Six was, at best, a delay of the infection. After the other bitten evacuees turned, we quickly dispatched the rest of the group. I was horried after the rst of the attacks. I couldnt believe what I was doing as I rst sunk my teeth into Major Williams, but his blood and esh passing my lips was the sweetest taste Id ever experienced. After the rst feasting, it became easier each time. We maintained our secured evac facility for several weeks and sustained ourselves on the esh of those we killed. I believe now that the Omega-Six is responsible for the group retaining pieces of their memories from their previous lives. After the President held his press conference to announce the situation to the world, we realized that the military response to the infected would be swift and brutal. We decided that we could not let this happen. I dont recall exactly when I lost my humanity, but that doesnt really matter. All that matters now is survival. What weve successfully created is nothing less than an evolution of man into a superior life form, and I refuse to let us be annihilated like some animal species. Even those of us who have retained nothing of their former selves are far superior to mankind. WE are the new top of the food chain; the living, or Food as weve come to call them, are nothing more than animals to be exploited for our benet. As we traveled through this brave new world, we encountered ever-increasing numbers of our brethren. While mindless and brutish, we found that they still served our needs. The crushing mass of their superior esh was the perfect tool allowing us to lay waste to community after community. The Food supply was endless; endless and delicious. I also found that we were able to exert a manner of control over our masses. Perhaps the virus mutated the communication centers of the brain, perhaps it created entirely new areas. Either way, it is irrelevant. We new Overlords, as we care to be called, are able to exert some direction for our followers. This is essential if we are to take what is rightfully ours. Without our guidance, the masses would simply rampage until they depleted our sustenance. We must take care to let the Food breed enough to sustain our numbers.

Each of the Overlords has decided to claim an area of this region for their own. Our increased capacity will undoubtedly lead to conict within our ranks and this would be counterproductive for our species; Homo sapiens supernus. I have selected the northeast. The massive population of this area ensures that our supply of Food will last for many, many years to come. The infrastructure of the former government is still strong here, even if their control is lost. This poses a constant threat to me and mine. As I delve into new ways to ensure our survival, I nd my own abilities increasing. Ive gained a superior control over my own instincts and have newfound power to control my environment. I am still struggling to understand these powers, but revel in them nonetheless. I have the ability to project But I digress, after we exhausted all of our food supply crippling fear into my Food. I believe that this stems in the evac facility, we realized that we needed to expand from the new growth Ive watched develop from within our feeding grounds into the communities nearby. my brain. Initially, the land bound allowing us to dine at our leisure. predators tried to sustain themselves in our wake, but Pathetic. they werent able to escape the hunger of my children. 36

While not as satisfying as the esh of humans, these creatures did provide sustenance for us. I say that they did for the simple reason that those creatures have since learned to stay away from us. This is more than I can say for humans though. They continue to throw fresh numbers at us in their futile attempts to retake the areas they have lost due to their weaknesses and inadequacies. Thankfully, those hindrances are coupled with the undeserved arrogance of mankind. They never learn. It speaks to the inferiority of Homo sapiens that they learn less than the common dog. It is this fact that shall be their undoing.

The Zombie Overlord is a powerful controlling force behind any zombie army. The Overlord, for whatever reason, still holds many of its memories from its past life, however distorted these memories may be. As they grow in power, so does the zombie horde they lead. The Enclave
In the rst few years after the outbreak, civilization fell apart. Cities were overrun and most of their populations turned into lifeless shambling monsters. The desperate survivors cried out for order, no matter who gave it to them. Out of the chaos came a man commanding a small army of armed warriors that fought back the tide of darkness. This man, a self-styled General, engaged the enemy with a zeal that hadnt been seen since New York fell. After a series of cleansing battles, Blake Palmer had little trouble getting the beleaguered populace to turn to his forces for leadership. The General was seen as a savior. Within a span of only 6 months he consolidated his authority over the Hudson River Valley and the Berkshires. His forces brought about the order that the people so craved, even if it wasnt the democratic society which they enjoyed before. His ranks swelled until he had an army numbering over one thousand. Palmer, a New York City police ofcer before the outbreak, had once attended the U.S. Army Military Academy at West Point. He was a cadet there when he was only eighteen years old and found that the military structure there was too much for his brash, young personality to handle. He left the academy and took a series of odd jobs, none of which met his need for a little adrenaline now and again. It was with New Yorks nest that he found his calling. Palmer was never one to hold to ights of whimsy or romanticize life, but he found that he enjoyed helping the citizens of The Big Apple so long as he got to bust a few scumbag heads in the process. He spent several years on patrol and was eventually selected for the SWAT teams on NYPD. The skills he developed during his tenure with the NYPD and the tactical training of the SWAT units helped him immensely in the rst few years after the Outbreak. His natural leadership qualities made him a central gure of every engagement in which he fought. He rapidly became the General in the ad hoc military group that had gathered around him. Palmer found that his new title boosted his swaggering ego and helped to dull the pain of the loss of so many of his fellow ofcers when the city fell. His army spent over a year purging the areas northwest of NYC and eventually developed a large following of civilians. At rst, he found these tagalongs to be a frustration, a hindrance to his ghting capabilities. After a time, however, he saw the need for their day-to-day skills in supporting his forces. Having fought for so long, his troops also found that the citizens provided a much needed reason to keep on ghting in the face of such a demoralizing enemy. It did not take long, however, for Palmers

Army List

followers to run short of supplies, both military and civilian. Palmer decided that he needed to nd a base of operations. He sent his forces out in last ditch attempt to secure resources. This army, called The Enclave by the people, sent missions to several National Guard Armories in the region and secured a large quantity of munitions. Once his ghting force was armed and equipped, Palmer immediately set to nding a secure place to set for the Enclave to make roots. Palmer knew of the facilities at West Point and decided that this would be an ideal place to start rebuilding and from which to launch military operations. Upon their return from the supply raids, he led a large force to re-secure the academy grounds. He found that the facility still stood, but had been largely abandoned. The Army forces that had remained holed up there were more than willing to join his forces. Palmer sent a scouting force back to his holdout in Rye, NY to gather the citizens and bring them to West Point; once there, the reconstruction began. Palmer, as wary of human forces that might challenge the security of his people as he was wary of zombies, promptly fortied West Point. He ordered cleared large swathes of the forest surrounding the college and sighted the few artillery pieces in his control on those areas. He had his troops coordinate work details which he sent to the nearby MidOrange Correctional Facility. After purging the state prison of the few remaining inmates who would not cooperate, these work details removed the fencing and transported it back to West Point. The fencing was secured in a perimeter around the most defensible buildings at West Point. Palmer created barracks within the newly created Compound and housed his army within its protective perimeter. He selected the most important civilians to house within the Compound as well. At this point the civilian population under his charge numbered over six hundred and could not be accommodated within the compound. These people were allowed to stay in those West Point buildings outside of the perimeter. Most gured that having Palmers army behind them was better than trying to survive on their own. These people planted crops and tended to the daily needs of Palmers army in return for the protection that his force offered. Palmer, in an effort to control the armaments that he secured, planted stockpiles of ammunition and arms in the surrounding countryside. Only Palmer and his most trusted advisors know of the locations of these caches. When needed, he sends scouting parties out to ensure the areas are secure. He then sends out a small force to retrieve the required munitions. He was also able to secure several small boats which he uses to patrol the Hudson River for 30 miles in each direction.

40

Palmer, having spent years in military or paramilitary service, believes in a strong chain-of-command. He believes that a strong leader with strong controls over the people is necessary given the current circumstances. He has set up an elite military unit within the Enclave called the Watchers. This group of soldiers forms his inner circle and advises him on almost every issue. The Watchers also form a sort of military police force over the people of the Enclave. Palmer is more than happy to let people do as they wish, so long as they do what theyre told and dont bring undue risk to the Enclave. Those that choose to break the laws set forth by Palmer and the Watchers are punished severely. Those guilty of the most serious offenses are given a choice between death or service in a penal unit within the Enclave Army. Those people who chose to live by Enclave law are generally left alone, provided they all contribute. Palmer will not tolerate freeloaders and insists that everyone do their part to ensure the Enclaves survival and prosperity. He doesnt fool himself by thinking that everything will return to the way it was before the Outbreak, but hell be damned if he allows the zombies to take over without a ght. In the fourteen months since Palmers rise to power in the Hudson River Valley, several bands of nomads attempted to dislodge his hold. These were universally met with annihilation. The bulk of the zombie presence in the area has largely been eradicated, with only sporadic attacks on the people of the Enclave. Palmer, however, not happy to merely survive, has sought to expand his power base outside of the Hudson River Valley and the Berkshires. He routinely sends his forces, now numbering around one thousand, out to bring other human settlements under his control. He armies are well trained militias with a strength of arms that rivals that of most in the area. Palmer routinely drills his troops to ensure that they have a high level of training; especially since hes turned his eyes towards the area of White Plains to the south. The only thing stopping this expansion is a new outbreak northeast of the Tappan Zee Bridge. Palmer, never an overly superstitious man, still believes it a bad omen that this newest outbreak originated in a little town called Sleepy Hollow.

Force Structure
The Enclave forces represent a faction of surviving humans in the Hudson River Valley region of New York State. They have been able to maintain a fairly disciplined military structure to their force. The military forces of The Enclave consist mainly of former U.S. military personnel and emergency services workers such as police ofcers and reghters. These individuals keep the order, supply and secure necessary resources, and protect the civilian populace of this fragment of society. Within The Enclave is a special group of dedicated men and women called the Watchers. These brave warriors have dedicated their lives to protecting the tradesmen, farmers, and other citizens. They wholly believe in The Enclave and its ability to bring humanity back from the brink of extinction and will do whatever it takes to make their brethren survive and even ourish. At the head of the Watchers is a council of leaders called, quite simply, the Watcher Council. This group is headed by General Palmer and makes the major decisions for the people of The Enclave. Each Enclave unit is assigned a rarity value: Basic, Support, Watchers, and Heros. A force from The Enclave is built around the Basic units. The core unit of Basic troops are the Militia. You can eld any number of militia units you choose. The other two Basic units are Penal Troops and Fireghter Platoons. These units have a certain number of Militia units you are required to eld before adding them to your force. The Support and Watcher units are assigned a rarity value that require a certain number of ANY basic troop choice before elding that Support or Watcher unit. Heroes have a rarity of 1 per 4 units. Some are listed as unique. See the Hero section for more details on specic restrictions.

Militia Squad
Lieutenant Gary Simpson walked along the line of new recruits into the militia ranks. Simpson had served seventeen years with the National Guard before the outbreak and was well versed in the qualities it took to be a soldier. As such, it was his charge to train the newly enlisted personnel within the ranks of the Enclave Militia forces. As he walked through the inspection of this new unit, he gave a critical eye to the bearing of each man and woman. He watched for any sign of weakness of character, cowardice, or lack of attention to detail. He found it difcult since the unit was equipped in such a patchwork manner. It had once been an easy take to assess new recruits; each having been issued the same equipment and expected to maintain that equipment to a standard. The Outbreak had changed all of that. These recruits were armed with an assortment of hunting ries, knives, and other miscellaneous weapons. They were dressed in all manner of fatigues that had been scrounged from area military surplus stores. They were underfed, ragged, and had all seen most of their loved ones and friends die a most horrible death. Had he commenced this inspection of Guardsmen ve years prior, each and every one of them would have been cleaning toilets with a toothbrush until their ngers bled. He stopped walking and turned to his second in command, Sergeant Horace Hoss McKinley. Sergeant McKinley, a moment, he said. Sir, was the stocky mans abrupt reply as they walked away from the line of recuits standing at attention. Hoss, asked Simpson, youve watched these people for four weeks now. Tell me, can they handle it? Are they ready to actually ght zombies, rather than run from them? Sir, Ive trained hundreds of soldiers over the years, replied the former drill sergeant, these aint the best Ive seen, but theyll do. Well Hoss, I hate having to settle for theyll do, but settling seems to be the only thing on the menu these past few years. The Sergeant nodded in agreement and both men walked back over the waiting trainees. Hoss walked purposefully over to one trainee, a slender, hollow-eyed youth barely old enough to shave, and barked an order at the man. With a panicked look in his eyes, the young soldier stood straight-backed to attention, having slouched while the veteran warriors were talking in private. McKinley walked back to his commanding ofcer and muttered, I think theyre more afraid of me than they are of the zombies at this point, Sir. The corner of Simpsons mouth twitched up in a knowing smile and he stepped towards the line. Alright! he bellowed, youve all volunteered to serve the Enclave and her people. Every last one of you has agreed to lay his or her own life down in the defense of this little piece of heaven weve carved out of this horrible mess we call a life. Youve all been trained as best as we can. Each of you has a weapon, that weapon is NEVER to leave your side, he shouted. If I ever hear of one of you running scared from your assigned unit, Ill put a bullet in you myself. These are hard times people. We need to be hard too. Follow your orders, do what you were trained to do, keep your wits about you, and youll survive. Fall short of that, and youll be walking around with THEM scrounging for lunch amongst your own people! He watched as each recruit turned their gaze inward, being hit hard by his words. He saw one man inch and drop his head slightly. Simpson turned his head to McKinley, who had also seen this. McKinley nodded to his Lieutenant and came down hard. Recruit! he screamed as he looked at the mans name patch, Jones. Jones, you heap! Do you have any doubts about your ability to do what the Lieutenant just said? N-no Sergeant, the terried man shouted. Well Jones, barked McKinley, I doubt that. Ive watched you for four weeks now and Ive got a bad feelin about you. What did you do before your enlistment Jones, inquired the soldier. I-I-Iwas, stammered the man, I was a plumber sir. Lieutenant Simpson walked over to the man, who was cowering under the Sergeants stern glare. Well Jones, said Simpson, I suggest you get back to clearing toilets before you get someone killed. Lieutenant Gary Simpson spun on his heel and strode back to his ofce within the Compound. He didnt enjoy cutting a man down like that, but he knew he was doing the man a favor. At least if he spent his time unclogging crappers, he live a bit longer. The life expectancy of a soldier in the Enclave Militia wasnt long to begin with, he didnt need his own troops cutting it even shorter.

The Militia Squads are the core upon which The Enclave has built its army. While not the best trained or equipped units, Militia forces do receive some basic military training and they are armed with rearms of various sorts. The Militia Squads usually have a hodge-podge of camoague and padded armor that offer some form of protection from the eyes and claws of the zombie hordes. Enlistees in the Militia tend to be weekend warriors, gun enthusiasts, and those citizens of The Enclave that dont have any real trade skills. Some of the soldiers are men and women who have lost everything they once held dear and have decided that it is better to die on the eld of battle than sick and wasting of starvation on their own. Lewis ORourke stood in front of the Watcher Council, awaiting judgment for his crimes. His hands shackled to a heavy chain around his waist, he could only clasp his hands together in front of him and pray to whatever gods had forsaken humanity, asking them to save him from the gallows. It wasnt his fault that the woman had tried to steal his meager rations. Sure, he might have struck her, but it wasnt his fault that his punch knocked her over and she happened to fall on a rock, striking her head in the process. He remembered the wash of blood and brain matter that sprang from her cracked skull as he watched, with an almost out-of-body amazement, the scene unfold before him. ORourke was jarred from his reections by the sound of the High Watchers voice booming from across the table before which he stood. I asked you a question, citizen, the mountain-sized man bellowed. Uh, ORourke stammered, Im sorry, sir. I was reecting upon my mistakes. Please forgive me. He hated being so subservient to these people, but he knew that they had absolute control over his fate. With a scowl of disgust, the High Watcher repeated his question, I will give you a choice citizen. Since you have broken our laws, you must be punished. You will be facing the death penalty unless you choose the service. I ask again, will you agree to serve in the Enclave Prison Corps rather than see the gallows? For ORourke, this was an easy choice. It was better to die ghting than to meet the reaper with your hands bound and a rope across your neck like an animal. Ill serve, was his only reply. With the sound of the gavel striking the desk, ORourke was led out of the makeshift courtroom and into the secured prison barracks. Unlike the last cell he was held in before his trial, this prison barracks was little more than a fenced in collection of tents, heavily guarded by Watcher soldiers. As he was escorted past the perimeter fence, his shackles were removed and he was shoved, not gently, into the yard. As he gazed around the barracks, he saw thirty or so other prisoners half-heartedly watching his inauspicious entry into this new world. As he dusted himself off, he was approached by a wiry man wearing the uniform of the State Department of Corrections, only the patches of that now defunct organization had been replaced with those of the Enclave. Well, came the gravely voice from ORourkes newest master, another scrap for ghtin. The man waved his hand toward one of the large olive green tents. Youll be bunking in tent number six. Theres a bedroll inside with your sorry name on it. Chows in two hours, until then, make yourself useful and move that rock wall ten feet to the left. ORourkes eyes followed the pointing thumb of the ofcer and saw a long stone wall oddly placed in the center of the compound. The wall was haphazardly built of large rocks and did not seem to serve any real purpose within the fenced in perimeter. Um, sir whats the point of moving that wall? It doesnt seem to be serving any real purpose there. The uniformed mans eyes narrowed in anger and his mouth contorted into a grimace. Thats Sergeant to you scumbag the man growled as he balled his meaty right hand into a st and proceeded to slam it full-force into ORourkes belly, I work for a living. Now YOU will too! he shouted. Now move yer butt and start haulin rocks. ORourke, clasping his stomach in pain, pushed himself out of the dust and made his way to the rock pile. It took him over three hours to move the entire wall. Famished when he was done, ORourke wiped the grime from his face with an equally dirty hand and headed wearily to the mess tent in the center of the barracks. As he pushed his way past the tent aps, he saw the other prisoners sitting around low tables, eating scraps of food with their bare hands. Sighing, he walked to the cooks table. The heavyset, mustard-covered man chortled as he approached. Foods all gone fer the day boy, the man laughed, spraying pieces of bread towards ORourke as he did so. ORourke turned to walk out of the tent and head back to his bedroll when the Sergeant stepped in his path. Awww, the man said, dripping with sarcasm, you miss dinner time cause you were working too hard? Too bad that. Looks like youre gonna have to wait for breakfast. ORourke stepped around the man and continued out the tent door. As he walked into the yard, he heard from over his shoulder, and breakfast is at oh-four-thirty hours. Were going on a supply raid tomorrow. Find a nice stick in the yard to use. Youll need it to ght off the zombies. ORourkes head hung low and the Sergeant laughed. It was going to be a long, sleepless night.

The laws of The Enclave arent that complex, but the punishments for violating them are harsh. It is seen as a necessity of life in these hard years after the Outbreak. Survival has been difcult enough without people adding to the troubles through their own misconduct. For those who violate the most serious of The Enclave laws, they are offered a choice: death or service. Most choose service as penance for their indiscretions. Depending upon the severity of the crime for which the Watcher Council convicts them, criminals in The Enclave are sentenced to a number of months in service to their community through the Penal Units. These units are placed at the forefront of battle where the convicted are best able to make good on their crimes. Firefighter Platoon
Filthy and decaying ngernails grasped at Jack LaFontaines turnout gear, trying to pull him under the press of rotting esh. Heaving forward with all of his might, LaFontaine pushed the initial wave away with the handle of his Pulaski Axe and rapidly reversed the tool, swinging it in a vicious arc at his foes. The heavy tool served as an effective weapon as it severed the head of one zombie and cleaved a second monster in half, from shoulder to groin. Blood sprayed over LaFontaines SCBA mask, momentarily blurring his vision. He ran his Nomex glove across the shield, clearing the mess as best he could. Just as he cleared away the gore, he saw a second wave of zombies attacking his engine crew from the left. He hefted the axe in his right hand and pulled the reghter to his left backwards, narrowly avoiding the slashing blow of a contorted and diseased appendage springing forth from the back of an undead abomination supporting the zombie horde. The reghter he saved, a burly man by the name of Washington, nodded his thanks and turned to reengage the zombies. LaFontaine leapt to Washingtons side and the two men swung their axes at what passed for the abominations head with the skilled precision that reected their years of ghting res in one of the largest cities in the world. The abomination raised one of its claw appendages to ward off the blows, but LaFontaines axe simply severed the bony growth, leaving a steady stream of blackened blood spurting into the air. Washingtons axe struck home, biting deeply into the beasts torso. The monster pulled away, bringing Washingtons axe with it as it went. As the abomination reeled backwards, it lashed out at Washington with its remaining talon, tearing through the thick cover of his turnouts and biting deeply into the esh of his left arm. Washington screamed in rage and pain, clutching his wounded limb as he fell to one knee. LaFontaine leapt in front of his fallen brother, guarding him with his axe. The abomination recovered from Washingtons last attack and surged forward towards LaFontaine. The beast opened its gaping maw, revealing dozens of razor sharp teeth covered in ichors and rotting esh. As it closed for what promised to be a lethal bite, LaFontaine dropped to one knee while thrusting his axe up and into the soft tissue under the monsters jaw. He felt the resistance wane as his makeshift weapon penetrated past the thick esh and through its gums and mouth. LaFontaine didnt stop his upwards thrust until he felt the jarring stop of his axe striking the underside of the abominations skull. His arm instantly awash in blood, he reversed the killing stroke and withdrew his axe. As the abomination screamed out in its dying rage, LaFontaine struck the zombie with the butt-end of his axe, propelling it back and away from Washington. As the rest of the re platoon closed ranks around the two men, LaFontaine grabbed Washington by the collar of his coat and pulled him away from the battle line. Washington screamed in pain as his gear pulled on his arm. Just one more minute buddy, LaFontaine said, his voice mufed by the SCBA mask pumping fresh air into his lungs. As the line of reghters closed in front of them and continued to engage the undead horde, LaFontaine set his comrade down and assessed the mans injuries. Deep laceration to the upper arm, he thought, just missed the brachial artery, looks like it severed some nerves, was his quick analysis. Cmon Wash, he said, grunting anew under the weight of his friend, were getting you to medi-vac. Youre done ghtin for today. Nice job. Frag that man, breathed Washington as he smiled wanly up at LaFontaine, Ill be back in the ght in a minute. No chance, hero, came the chuckling reply, youre looking pale as a ghost and are losing a lot of blood. JESUS, man, you got BLOOD all over my turnouts! HELPED YOU, laughed LaFontaine as he helped his colleague from the battleeld, youve lost so much blood youre delirious. Both men continued the shufing trudge to the medic station in silence as the battle raged behind them, condent that the men and women theyd left behind would nish the job they had all started.

Riot Police Squad

The rhythmic stomp of boots was a comforting heartbeat as Sergeant Paul Taft led his unit of riot police across the dusty streets. Many of his men were on their last leg, having marched for four straight hours to assist a scouting party sent out to secure supplies. The scouting party had become surrounded by zombies as they loaded up the last of the food and fuel into the box truck and had desperately fought to stay alive for well over two hours before calling for help. Taft hoped that those men had held out, but he doubted it. He didnt make it twenty years as a city cop by having a lot of faith. Since the Outbreak, what little faith he had before had dwindled to almost nothing. As his unit rounded the corner of an abandoned city block, he saw the ickering light of burning ames coming from a warehouse up ahead. He heard a dull thudding blast and saw the telltale arcing light of a signal are rise from a building next to the engulfed warehouse. He shouted the orders to his squad and they hit the double-time towards the location of the scouting party. Skirmish lineEXECUTE! he shouted as they neared the scene, keep eyes open, we dont know where those rotting bastards are hiding. The police under his command poured from their twocolumn marching formation into a skirmish line two-deep with the well-oiled precision of trained professionals used to working under re. Taft had condence in the abilities and grit of these men. They had survived this wretched excuse for a life as a unit for well over eight months. They had only lost two of their number and the replacements hed received t in well. Theyd hold; he was sure of it. As they neared the burning warehouse, he heard a shout of warning from the leftmost ank of his skirmish line. He turned to see over a dozen zombies staggering out of a storefront towards their position. LEFT FLANK! he called and his men quickly responded to this command. They angled the line to their left and were immediately set upon by the undead threat. The horde crashed into their heavy riot shields and the press was almost overwhelming. Taft saw a blur of decayed esh wave over his shield and heard a wet slap against the side of his Kevlar helmet. He thrust his shield forward and raised his Mark XIX Desert Eagle pistol towards his attacker. He braced his shoulder against the impending recoil and red. Before he even saw the explosion of blood and gore, he was turning to assess the status of his line. He barked orders with condence as his men pushed back the mass of zombies, nishing the melee. They turned to continue toward the holdout location of the scouts and heard a bellow from behind. The line turned to see the massive form of a soldier rushing their position. Taft had seen these creatures before; the dead remnants of an elite warrior, trained to kill for the government, now simply killing for the hunger. He ordered his men to break the skirmish line and take cover in the debris on either side of the street. Taft knew that their shields would provide little protection from the arsenal of weapons the soldier carried. As he lunged for cover, he heard the booming clack of a chain gun cycling and then the snap of high velocity rounds breaking the sound barrier near his ear. Taft rolled deftly into the wrecked building and spun to level his rearm at the zombie. He screamed for his men to open re. After a hail of rounds erupted from either side of the street, he saw the camouaged gure crumple to the ground. Taft held no illusion that this attack nished the zombie soldier and ordered his men across the street to hold cover and protect his attempts to destroy the monster. He and his nearest men leapt from cover to end the threat from the soldier. As they did so, they heard the remainder of the unit open re to their left, obviously engaging a new threat. Condent that they would hold, Taft rushed toward the writhing soldier on the ground ahead. As he closed on its position, the beast stood to confront him. He red a round from his Desert Eagle and drew his baton. The soldier inched as the round hit home and raised its hands in defense, its maw opening, eager to feed upon Tafts warm esh. As the two warriors met in a urry of blows, the soldier grasped Taft by the throat and lifted him off of his feet. Taft struggled for air as the grip of the soldier tightened around his airway. His eyes widened as he looked into the horrifying visage of his enemy and bursts of light ashed in front of his eyes as his lungs burned for air. With his remaining strength, Taft swung his steel alloy baton into the side of the soldiers decaying head. He felt it hit home with a sickening splatter and was dropped to the ground as the zombie reeled back from the attack. As he hit the street, Taft struggled to get air into his lungs and raised his pistol again. The zombie, from one knee, reached out for its chain gun which had fallen to the ground during the reght. Determined to not die in the stinking street, Taft red the remaining rounds from his gun into his attacker. As it fell prone, he summoned all of his energy to stand. As he

walked to the motionless zombie before him, he reloaded his Desert Eagle. He stood over the body of the undead soldier and red one point-blank round into its head, ensuring that it would not rise again. He glanced around the street to nd his men back in a skirmish line, pressed hard by the newest zombie onslaught. With a resigned sigh, he recovered his shield and rushed to support his unit.

During the rst days of the Outbreak, the Police Departments of the United States were overwhelmed by the sheer number of service calls, suspicious occurrences, and untimely deaths that plagued the country. Once they realized what they were dealing with, the police were quick to react. One of the rst things law enforcement agencies did was to deploy ofcers in full riot gear. This included hefty, thick armor designed to withstand all manner of projectiles, kevlar helmets with face shields, and heavy duty plastic riot shields. These tools werent quite enough to stop the cities from being overrun, but they are deployed now with precision and skill to form one of the most vital elements of support for The Enclaves armies. There are few zombie foes that match the defensive capabilties of riot police. UNIT SIZE: One (1) Police Sergeant and ve (5) Patrolmen, each armed with a .44 Magnum Pistol and full riot gear. Sniper
The sounds of crickets chirping, the steady drip of water, and his own breathing were the only things Sergeant Kyle Vance heard as he lay prone atop the rusty water tower overlooking the suburban sprawl in front of him. From his perch, he could see the engagement in the streets below as the Enclave force battled a horde of zombies larger than any hed seen before. He gazed through the scope of his rie and drew a bead on a massive zombie making its was towards the rest of Vances SWAT squad. He knew his fellow ofcers could use the help, but his mission orders were clear; wait for the heavily armed soldier zombie to come out of hiding. Vance was condent that the rest of the SWAT team was up to the task they were facing, they had been many times before. If he red now, he would give away his position of advantage and be swarmed by the undead hungry for his warm esh. He patiently waited while the ght raged on. After what seemed like an eternity, he heard a loud explosion from somewhere to his right. He glanced and saw what was left of a Watcher HMMWV scattering in a ery ball. He knew that it would take substantial repower to take that type of vehicle out with one shot, and he was fully aware of the armaments carried by the zombie super-soldiers, as they had come to be called. Scanning the distant buildings he determined that the attack most likely had come from a ruined schoolhouse approximately eight hundred yards away; not too hard a shot for a sniper with his training and experience. He lowered his head to align his right eye with the scope and took aim on the building. After only a few moments, he saw the bulky gure of a chain gun weilding zombie appear in a second story window of the school. Vance estimated the creature to be roughly seven feet tall and unarmored by the looks of the ragged military issue t-shirt that hung loosely around its chest. He centered the pale white crosshairs of his night vision scope on the zombies torso. Drawing in a half-breath and holding it, he gently squeezed the trigger. He watched the monstrosity inch backwards and tumble out of sight. Thankful for the suppressing muzzle break, he was condent that the ash from his weapon went unseen. With the precision of years worth of training, he calmly centered the sights of the weapon on the black space of the empty window. Within moments the super-soldier lurched back into the window, its face contorted in rage. Vance red another round into the zombies shoulder and it fell once again from view. Jesus, that thing is tough, he thought, reecting on the speed with which the soldier stood up from the initial shot that would ordinarily take down the biggest former NFL linebacker with ease. As he readied his rie for a third shot, he saw, in growing alarm, the zombie stand back up and stare straight towards his perch on the water tower. Vance hastily scrambled backwards away from the edge as the chain gun erupted in a storm of re and lead. Pain seared through Vances soul as the rst round ripped into his left arm, narrowly missing the bone. As he desperately made for cover, he felt a second round graze his left quadricep muscle. Blocking the pain from his mind, Vance dropped over the top of the tower and onto the rickety metal ladder leading to the ground below. A good sniper knows when its time to change position, he remembered from his classes, and he couldnt think of a more appropriate example to apply this bit of wisdom. When he reached the bottom of the ladder, he saw that the fear lingering in the back of his mind had come true: several zombies had reacted to the sound of the chain gun rounds striking the water tower and were headed in his direction. He switched his rie from single shot sniper action to three round bursts and made for the far end of the fence surrounding the tower. Once he reached the chain link perimeter, he slung his rie over his right shoulder and scaled the fence. Vance hit the ground with a heavy thump and started to run for a nearby house, the ravenous zombies close on his tail. With the blood from his leg wound soaking his boot, he found the run more unsteady than he would like. He gave up his rush for the house and turned to meet his new attackers. Vance steadied his rie against his hip and opened re. The rst two zombies fell in a mass of gore and Vance started backwards. He red a second burst at the nearest monster, tearing its already decayed body in half. The beast staggered forward and fell almost on top of him. Vance looked up from the downed zombie and had no time to re a third burst before the sole remaining creature was upon him. The zombie struck Vance full-force in the chest and bore him to the ground. When the two gures hit, Vance felt the wind blasted from his lungs and he struggled desperately to kick the beast off of him. Rotting, dripping hands grasped at his tactical vest and the stench of the decaying human body almost made him wretch. Bile from the zombies mouth dripped onto his face and down his cheek as he ailed madly to escape. Suddenly, the weight of his attacker was lifted from his body and black blood spattered across his helmet.

50

Dazed and confused, Vance looked up. Standing over him was his commanding ofcer, MP-5 at the low ready and anked by the rest of his SWAT unit. Dammit Vance, we cant leave you alone for ve minutes without you getting whopped by these rotters, the man joked, extending his hand in aid. This brought a laugh from the rest of the team.

Thanks guys, was all Vance had the energy to say. Looks like youve been hit, said the commander in a casual tone, you gonna live? Yeah, Vance replied, Ill make it. Good. Now get into that house and take out that supersoldier. Weve got work to do.

With the presence of such devastating creatures as Zombie Brutes, Beasts,Abominations, and Overlords, the snipers value cannot be underestimated. Many a time has a sniper found himself in a slug-fest with a Zombie Super Soldier for control of the battle. UNIT SIZE: One (1) Sniper with M40A3 Sniper Rie. Zombie Cleansers
The steady sounds of horric combat shattered the quiet of the summer evening as Shannon Perrin and her squad of cleansers made their way down the ruined side street toward the ank of the zombie horde du jour. She heard the rhythmic breathing of her counterparts over their open comms channel and found that it comforted her. They all understood that the job of a zombie cleanser was to get up close and personal with their undead adversaries. They all understood that the Kevlar lined jumpsuits they wore provided only so much protection from the attacks they would likely face in mere moments. Even the welder-style masks they wore didnt stop the most debilitating of zombie attacks. Still, Perrin felt comfort in the ten gallon canister of cleanser liquid she had strapped to her back. There wasnt a zombie around that could withstand its corrosive properties. As she stepped through the wreckage of a burned out school bus, she repeated the names of all of the loved ones she had lost over the years since the Outbreak. Perrin found that this helped her to focus her energies on destroying the zombies rather than feeling the inevitable terror in seeing their rotting faces and exposed organs up close. Sarge, called one of her team, breaking her ruminations, were closing on the main body of the horde; just around the next corner. Copy that, Wilkins, she said, O.K. team, diamond formation. Ill take lead, Riccosi on left, Kowalski on my right, Wilkins, youve got the rear. Lets do this people and get home in time for dinner. The group took their positions silently as the rounded the corner of an old warehouse to face the press of decomposing bodies attacking the rest of the Enclave forces. Perrin primed the nozzle of the pump connected to her tank and knew that the rest of her cohorts would be doing the same. She glanced down at the thick green uid starting to bead up on the tip of the dispenser tip and said, lets rock. letter and joined her in a line against the advancing zombies. When the rst wave of zombies was within the optimum six foot radius, she called out over the comm, WASTE EM! Perrin continued to rhythmically chant to herself the names of the fallen as she poured shot after shot of the chemical onto the zombies. One by one the monsters fell under the ferocity of their attack, disappearing in steaming piles of liqueed esh as they went down. Each of her team members did the same, decimating the horde in front of them. Over the din of battle, Perrin heard an ungodly roar from across the street and saw the largest zombie shed ever encountered. She momentarily diverted her attention from the zombies in front of her and focused on the twelve foot tall rotting carcass of what used to be a grizzly bear. Perrin had heard of such beasts, but had never seen one in person. The bear charged through the press of zombies, tossing them to the side as if they were rag dolls. Perrin heard the comforting clack-clack of gunre approaching their position and ordered her crew to pull back. In unison, the four warriors backed away from the engagement, continuing to spray the cleanser liquid at their foes as they went. Once they had retreated to a defensible position, they stood guard in case any more zombies came their way. Crap, Sarge, muttered Kowalski, I thought bears were cranky when they were alive. This takes the cake though. She glanced at him just as the rst massive concussion rocked the heavy wooden door leading to the side street outside. Looks like Yogis back, she called, readying her cleanser unit.

The second attack on the door sent large portions of it careening into the room occupied by Perrin and her squad. She instinctively averted her eyes from the spray of splinters and pulled the trigger. The green zombie-toxin spewed forth At her command, the entire squad rushed in formation to from the nozzle and coated the matted and lthy fur of the engage the zombies. Perrin pulled the trigger on her weapon rampaging zombie bear. It roared in anger as the liquid ate and smiled in grim satisfaction as the viscous goo slashed through its thick hide and he swatted a paw into Riccosis over one zombie, then the next. Each of the creatures chest, sending him reeling into a wall across the room. instantly reacted with a scream of agony and dropped to Perrin heard the dull metallic thud of Riccosis tank striking the ground, writhing as the substance corroded their undead the concrete wall and the subsequent hiss of the pressurized esh. She head Riccosi screaming COME GET SOME! gas propellant streaming from the hose attachment on the from somewhere behind her and knew that the wiry man bottom of the tank. She focused her attacks on the bear as was thoroughly enjoying every minute of this. She couldnt she saw, out of the corner of her eye, Riccosi spinning back necessarily blame him; the four humans had taken out over towards the bear before his tank nally exploded in a wash ten zombies in this initial attack. of metal, gas, and cleanser uid. She braced herself for the imminent reaction from the mass of zombies. Right on cue, they turned from their initial combat and faced this new threat. The three other members of her squad followed their training to the Perrin saw that Riccosi had the sense to spin his back towards the bear at the last minute, directing the bulk of the explosion at the marauding monster. The man was thrown back into the wall from which he had just spun and slid motionless to the ground beneath. The bears howl of anger

turned to one of remembered agony as a massive glob of cleanser coated its head and shoulders. She retreated a step as the ailing beast staggered towards her, maw open and arms swinging wildly about. She red one last blast from her cleanser, emptying the tank in the process. The ground beneath her feet rumbled as the zombie bear collapsed under the corrosive uid and slid, stopping only inches away from her. She briey looked down at the animal in disgust and pity before turning towards the motionless form of Riccosi. She leapt over the downed bear and rushed to the mans side. Perrin ripped the helmet from Riccosis head and took off one of her thick rubber gloves. She pressed her rst two ngers against his neck, feeling desperately for a carotid pulse. After a few moments, she felt the lifeblood beating beneath his warm esh. Sighing in relief she turned to the other two men in her charge. Hes alive, banged up, but alive. Sweet, said Wilkins smiling wickedly, slacker owes me a meal ration ticket. Kowalski laughed heartily and Perrin looked up from Riccosi to Wilkins. Youre a sick bastard, sick, she said shaking her head and replacing her glove. Perrin stood and pulled out her twoway radio. Cmon guys, lets get Riccosi ready for evac.

Chunks of plaster and sheetrock sprayed down the hallway as the explosion tore apart the corridor. She watched the cop in front of her fall backwards in agony, clutching his leg just above the knee. The dust stung her eyes and choked her as she made her way towards her fallen teammate, but Magdalena Cortez wasnt about to leave a man behind to be eaten by some disgusting monster. Cortez rushed forward through the debris and grabbed onto the ofcers ballistic vest carrier. Cmon, Thomas, she shouted over the cacophony of the combat around them, get your butt moving. Pulling with all of her strength, she helped the man stand. She slung his left arm over her shoulders and started to climb through the rubble towards safety. Just a little farther, man, she growled as she red her MP-5 down the hall to dispatch a zombie bent on turning them into lunch. Once the duo reached a room on the rst oor, she laid him down and inspected the damage to his leg. The man was grimacing in pain as she tore his BDU trousers apart around the wound. Its just a scratch, she said as she reached down and yanked a piece of metal out of the gaping hole in his quad muscle. The man shouted out in pain, JESUS, CORTEZ! he cried. She ashed a crooked half-smile up at him as she reached into her pack for a bandage and started to dress the wound. Youre a friggin baby, Thomas, she joked. Yeah, he chuckled in between gasps, boo-hoo. You gonna nurse me later? he quipped. You wish, she replied as she tightened the bandage a bit tighter than really necessary. Aaarrghh, the SWAT ofcer grunted, alright, you win, you win Cortez, he laughed. The two SWAT ofcers took a minute to breath and then reassessed their situation. They could tell from the bursts of gunre that the other ve cops in their unit were still in the building. Somehow the elite unit had become separated during the erce ghting on the second oor. A pack of the rotting zombie dogs had leapt from a blasted ofce off of the main corridor on that level. As the team jumped for cover and began to re are the new threat, she and Thomas had been pushed backwards down the corridor. The two ofcers had found a defensible position when the unit of undead soldiers came down from the third oor. She recalled jumping into the stairwell with Thomas as the soldiers advanced down the hallway towards them. She had heard the blast from the landing above her as the missile from the unit hit the wall leading to the stairs. When she looked up through the falling debris, she saw Thomas falling. Cmon, man, she said, theyre sure to be back on us any minute now. Besides, weve still got puppies loose in here with us. Gotcha, grunted the other SWAT ofcer. The two veteran police ofcers made their way toward the sounds of battle above them. As they neared another stairwell, they heard the lightly padded feet of dogs approaching them from behind and circling around them. Cortez and Thomas exchanged glances and spun simultaneously to meet the threat. As the rst of the zombie dogs leapt toward them, they red their weapons in a classic spray pattern, downing their enemy. Four of the ve hounds went down in clumps of festering hair and esh, the fth, however, shook off the wounds and started circling to their left, what was left of its snout contorting, showing gore covered fangs. Son-uf-a, breathed Thomas, tough pooch. Cortez raised her MP-5 towards the beast as it charged. Wanna treat uffy? she growled at it leapt in the air toward them. The dogs eyes widened as the rounds struck home, blowing its heart out of its back. The momentum from the dogs jump carried it into Cortez and she punched forward with both of her hands, knocking the vile monster to the ground where it lay twitching. That was the cheesiest thing Ive ever heard, Cortez, said Thomas. Yeah, she smirked as she red a single round into the dogs head, at least I didnt say hasta la vista, baby. Thomas smiled as he turned to the stairwell, Cortez coming up alongside of him. Without so much as a word between them, the two trained cops went up the stairs to aide their fellow ofcers as the battle raged overhead.

Ask a cop in The Enclave and theyll tell you that the only things that have changed for the police ofcers assigned to SWAT Teams are the targets. Before the Outbreak, these highly trained tactical specialists undertook the most dangerous of duties known to law enforcement. From drug raids to hostage situations, these teams of cops were called in when the situation got too hot to handle for everyone else. In the time since the outbreak, the SWAT teams nd themselves called upon all the time, even for routine missions such as scouting for resources. This is credited to the fact that every day is a situation too hot to handle for most of the survivors. SWAT teams are equipped with their familiar armor and MP5 submachine guns, as well as advanced TAC Com gear. TAC Comms are rare and almost invaluable resources that allow the teams to maintain constant communication with the rest of their team mates and army commanders. This enhanced communicaiton capability allows them to operate over a wider area than the standard Enclave troops. Ralph Emerson crouched under the boughs of a large pine tree to take some refuge from the scorching heat of the late July sun. He hadnt eaten a decent meal in well over four days; the same amount of time he and the rest of his Watcher unit had spent on this resource scouting mission. He brushed aside the bed of brown, dry needles nearby and dug within the rich mulch. He came across a fat grub and promptly tossed it into his mouth, swallowing it whole so he wouldnt have to taste the sweet, yet nonetheless repugnant, gush of innards he had experienced when chewing the insects. Even after three years of hard living after the Outbreak, he still couldnt get used to the idea of eating insects for sustenance. Hed heard all of the arguments telling him that they were rich in vitamins and could keep a person going for quite some time. Somehow, he doubted that this was what his namesake meant when he wrote of living deliberately. He lifted his dented metal canteen to his parched lips and drank the last swallow of water inside. He looked inside the canister hoping that it would, upon closer inspection, be magically relled. It wasnt. Despite the hardships of the scouting missions, and life as a Watcher in general, he knew that these forays outside of West Point were absolutely critical to the survival of the Enclave and he would follow his orders and assignments without question. Still, it was disheartening to spend a week away without any success whatsoever. He subconsciously ngered the trigger of his shotgun as he looked out over the valley beneath him. He saw the smoke rising from the houses down below where the farming settlement was obviously preparing the evening meal for the workers. Something will turn up soon he thought, it has to. No sooner than he nished this thought, he heard a shout from the distance. He stood, removed his binoculars from his pack, and scanned the valley oor. His heart rate quickened as he saw a dark mass of broken gures slowly shambling towards the Enclave farming community below. ROTTERS! he screamed to his comrades likewise perched along the ridge, two oclock; around 30 of them; approaching the farms along the river. Without needing direction, the rest of his unit hastily shouldered their packs and readied their weapons. In unison, they began the sprint down the ridge into the valley. Emerson directed his men along an intercept course as fast as they could. He knew the lay of the land and planned to engage the zombies in a small clearing on the riverbanks merely a hundred yards south of the farm on the outskirts of the village. This settlement was the Enclaves most valuable producer of corn and pork; they must defend it at all costs. He could only hope that his men could make it in time to prevent too many casualties.

Watcher Infantry

As the Watchers neared the area, Emerson red a single round into the air, hoping that the zombies would change course and make for their position. His plan worked perfectly. He ran towards the clearing, swatting branches from his face, and directed his men to form a semi-circle holding formation on the north end. Just as his men started to take position, the rst of the zombies entered to clearing to nd their next meal. Let em have it! he called as he leveled his shotgun at the rst of the monsters. He heard his men open re as he waited for the rst wave to come close enough to get the full brunt of his shotgun blast. Once they were in range, he red, obliterating the closest zombie and tearing the arm off of the one next to it. He slammed the fore grip backwards, discharging the spent casing and re-chambering a live round. He brought the weapon back to the ready position and started into the clearing. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Watcher Desjardins struggle with his rearm, which had jammed during the rst volley. Seeing that the man was too close to the zombies to risk ring his shotgun, Emerson withdrew his hunting knife and sprinted towards the melee. As he ran, Desjardins made distance backwards and stumbled over a rock, falling onto his back. The lead zombie pounced on the panicked man, scratching and snapping its jaws. Emerson leapt on top of the two and thrust his wickedly sharp blade deep into the back of the zombies skull, destroying its brain. The zombie fell limp on top of Desjardins, who struggled to push the rank corpse off and rejoin the ght. Emerson, another zombie closing on his ank, let his knife fall away, still embedded in the head of the beast. He grabbed his shotgun in both hands and spun, driving the butt end of the weapon into the forehead of his new attacker. Feeling the satisfying crunch of bone, he reversed his stroke and leveled the gun at the zombies chest. After one blast, the zombie fell to the ground, its torso blown in two from the strength of the shot. Sensing a moment to assess the situation, Emerson scanned the clearing and saw his unit cleaning up the last remaining monsters in a gruesome dance of blood and esh. He reached down to help the fallen Watcher to his feet. Jam? he inquired casually. Yeah, damned shoddy rounds we got from the armory last week, replied Desjardins. Almost got me that time, thanks. Dont mention it, Emerson grunted, turning to face the rest of his men, and well see to the workers at the munitions depot when we get back. Johansen, Richardsmake double-time to the settlement. Theyll be scared out of their minds with all this shooting. Let em know theyre in the clear.

56

For now, said Desjardins quietly. Emerson turned to look at the blood spattered Watcher. Yup, and thats why it looks like were spending the night here. Zombie cleanup. Ive never seen them come in such small numbers. I guarantee theres more out there. Roger that, Sir, said Desjardins as the remaining Watchers dusted themselves off and started the trek to the village in wary silence.

There are soldiers and then there are Watcher soldiers. The Watcher Infantry consists of some of the best warriors left after the Outbreak. They are devoted to the cause of The Enclave and believe that only through strict military regimentation will humanity survive. Those hours that they do not spend training, they spend on vigilant patrol in the region. Watcher Infantry units work a grueling schedule of rounds between the various strongholds and settlements of The Enclave. Their purpose, to protect the citizenry and resources that The Enclave so desperately needs to survive and recover. It is not unusual for an individual unit to spend weeks, if not a month, out in the eld, away from their bunks and relative safety. The soldiers of the Watcher Infantry, however, take this duty not only in stride, but take pride in the sacrices they make for their people. They are well armed and equipped and frequently utilize one of the few vehicles that The Enclave has at its disposal.

Over the deep rumble from the hard-pressed engine of the battered hum-vee Gabriel Foster could hear the shouting of men and the sporadic clack of gunre. He visualized the riot equipped police ofcers pressing back the mass of zombies attempting to encircle the abandoned fuel depot, clearing a way for his Watcher platoon to make a precision insertion into the undead horde currently occupying the compound. Fosters ruminations were broken by the jarring impact of a massive force striking the side of the hum-vee. He regained his balance before being thrown out of his bench seat only to feel the vehicle lose control and skid out of control. The entire unit of Special Forces soldiers were tossed about the passenger transport compartment as the skilled driver compensated for the impact and brought the vehicle back onto course. Jesus! cried out one of the men, what was that?

the creatures, dropping it in a heap of bloody, decomposing esh. The three remaining monsters continued to press toward his position and he was aware of more gunre coming from over his shoulder to engage these threats. Two of the zombies were felled by a hail of gunre and the third had its left leg sawed off by the spray of lead that hit it; it rocked forward and went crashing to the ground. Foster turned his attention to the front and started to make his way to regroup with the rest of the unit. As he took a step he felt a claw-like nail grasping at his BDU pants. He looked down and saw the recently felled zombie dragging itself up his leg in an attempt to feed on him. No you dont, you bastard, grunted Foster as he slammed the butt of his rie into the things skull, crushing the bone and liquefying the brain. He renewed his calculated rush forward with the rest of the unit and heard the splintering of wood as the door to the nearest building was blown off of its hinges. From within emerged a huge, twisted form of a zombie with two long appendages sprouting from its back. The monster leapt at the closest Watchers, slashing out at the men with its razor sharp talons. Within mere moments, the two men were torn in half, their mangled corpses ung to the side as the zombie advanced. Foster, along with the remaining Watchers, opened re. He watched as his rounds, and those of his comrades, struck the beast full-on in the center mass of its rotted torso. Blood spewed from its wounds and the creature staggered back a step before regaining its momentum. The unit spread out as the beast continued to rampage amongst their ranks. Foster saw another man felled by the vicious attacks of the abomination and continued to pour rounds into the things chest. The Watchers began to pull out their combat knives as the beast closed distance and it became too close to re weapons, for risk of hitting one of their own. Cornell screamed in agony as the beast lashed out, severing the hardened warriors right leg. Foster watched in horror as the man fell backwards to the ground, his life blood spurting out onto the packed dirt. Foster leapt toward the zombie as the units medic rushed towards their fallen commander, pulling out his med-kit as he ran. Foster, with a bellow of rage he could hardly recognize as his own, ung himself onto the back of the creature, narrowly impaling himself on the sharp appendages as he did so. With an almost out-of-body disconnection, Foster saw his right arm swing downwards, combat knife readied to deliver what he hoped would be a killing blow. Foster felt the jarring impact of the blade plunge deep into the base of the monsters skull and was suddenly thrust backwards as the thing tried to buck him off like an angry steer. Foster, always an excellent athlete and an avid weight lifter, held on to the handle of his knife with a death grip as the abomination swing wildly, its sturdy appendages ailing at him in an attempt to dislodge the man. He could feel the knife grinding around in the beasts brain case; feel the breaking of bone and hear the grating of metal as it split the skull. He wrapped his legs around the torso of the monster and rode it to the ground as it could no longer stand upright with its energy failing. With a massive crash, the two plowed into the earth amidst a spray of dirt and rock. Upon impact, the abomination twisted and rolled over Foster, crushing his leg in the process. He screamed in pain as he felt the bone in his femur crack. Determined to nish the zombie, he maintained his grip on

Some huge friggin zombie bear, came the call from the front seats. Bears, someone called out, whats next? Within moments the hum-vee screeched to a halt and the commanding ofcer, Lieutenant Steve Cornell, was on his feet. MOVE OUT! he bellowed, you esh-bags know what to do. With the precision that showed their years of military training and cohesion as a unit, the Watcher Special Forces unit poured out of the hum-vee, weapons at the ready. Without a word, the men formed a spearhead formation at the tail end of the transport. Cornell pounded his st on the back hatch of the vehicle, signaling to the driver that the unit had disembarked and the hum-vee should make to the rear of the battle line. As the vehicle sped off, Foster scanned his surroundings and had to admit, he didnt like what he saw. The men were forty-or-so paces into the chain link fence that enclosed the compound. Police, re, and militia units were embroiled in combat outside the perimeter and several of the outlying buildings were on re. Within the depot the dark forms of zombies were beginning to emerge from the concrete buildings inside. Foster heard a low rumble from the opposite end of the compound and the primal screeching of some unknown enemy somewhere in the area. FOSTER, called Cornell, radio, NOW! Foster, the units radio specialist, ran toward the Lieutenant, turned his back to the man, and took a knee. He felt his commander pulling the microphone out of the canvass backpack in which Foster stored the archaic radio. The device, most likely from the Vietnam War era, was heavy and unwieldy, but it was the best that could be scrounged and made operational given the current state of things. He heard Cornell call out for reghter support to the west end of the depot to extinguish the res before they caught the fuel tanks and blew the entire area to hell. The Lieutenant then ordered the men to push the incoming zombies back from the fence to make a hole for the reghters to do their thing. The unit maintained the spearhead formation as it pressed toward the area engulfed in ames. The warriors red their weapons endlessly to ght back the encroaching horde of undead. Foster saw a group of rotters moving to his left and spun to face the threat. He red his rie into the rst of

the knife. In a nal, massive spasm, the abomination seized with such force that Foster felt the carbon steel blade of his knife break apart from the sturdy tongue embedded in its hilt. The skull of the creature broke apart and Foster was instantly awash in grey brain matter and rancid, bloody gore. The zombie stopped moving. With a erce grunt, and with sharp pain shooting up his hip from his thigh, Foster thrust the beast off. He noticed his vision starting to dim as the pain overwhelmed his senses. He was vaguely aware of his squad-mates calling for a medi-vac and the rm grip of hands on his leg and shoulders. The darkness of unconsciousness took him as his comrades hoisted both he and his terribly wounded commander into the back of the hum-vee, which had returned to rescue the team. The group sped off to bring the injured warriors to the back lines before returning to the battleeld to nish the job at hand.

Her husband was slain by the beast but Monica, ever the survivor, destroyed the undead monster and continued on. After a month of lonely wandering, she made her way north along the Hudson River where she made contact with Enclave scouting forces. Her grit and determination, as well as her developing skill for killing zombies, made her an instant personality amongst the civilians in the human settlement. To this day, she is held up as an example of the surviving human spirit and has even made a name for herself amongst the Watcher Council. Whenever the citizens of the Enclave are threatened, Banks throws herself at the undead enemy with the fury of a person who has lost everything that once mattered.

General Blake Palmer

General Blake Palmer stood at parade rest as he stared out the large window overlooking the Compound grounds. His grim face reected his mood. Hed lost nine men in a food raid the day before. Nine good men, thought Palmer. With supplies running as low as they were, food raids were a necessity. He hated throwing his troops into that battle, but it had to be done. The numbers of zombies were as high as ever, the ChronoCorp security forces were hording all supplies in the region, and the heavy rains during the last growing season made for poor crop yield. Damn, thought Palmer. He hated having to concern himself with such mundane matters as crop yields; hed much rather be consolidating his forces to purge the surrounding town and cities of any zombie infestations. He already cut rations to the civilian population in the Compound in half, any more and hed have food riots. He didnt like having to cut rations, but the basic facts of reality stood; he needed to have his ghting men and women at full strength or the civilians would be overrun. Palmers ruminations were disturbed by the click of boots behind him. He turned his head ever-so slightly to see the dark form of his subordinate silhouetted in the doorway behind him. Captain, what is it? asked Palmer. General, replied the large framed man in battle-dress uniform, weve got a sighting. Palmer turned and pressed a button on his desk. The area was instantly bathed in a harsh orescent light illuminating a large table on which sat a topographical map of the region. He strode over to the table. Tell me. Sir, scouts reported a mass of roughly one hundred zombies headed westbound over the north ridge at 0300 hours. We

estimate theyll be in view of the outer sentry posts within ve hours. Damn, Palmer muttered under his breath. Captain Harris, get the troops briefed and fed. Check our ammunition stores and pull the civilians in behind the fence. Palmer returned to his view overlooking the Compound. He saw a middle-aged man sitting on a bench on the grounds staring into the sky. Palmer pressed the transmitter on the radio sitting on the sill next to the window. Harris. ~Yessir get that slacker on the bench tossed into the brig stat. ~Roger that. Palmer turned to his desk and sat in the plush leather chair. Hed teach that civilian what happened to loafers while his troops fought back the horde.

There isnt much that can beat the look of a well painted army of miniatures standing upon the tabletop battleeld, waiting to lay waste to their opponent. For many people, the collecting and painting of an army is as much fun ,if not more fun, than playing the actual game. Others really enjoy crafting the world of terrain amidst which the models move and ght. Well, whatever your poison, we can all agree that theres something in this for everyone.

First, lets talk about miniatures. Battleeld Evolution, and hence Apocalypse-Z, is intended for 28mm miniature wargaming. Luckily for us Z-types, there are a wide selection of 28mm models of both zombie and human forces. We scoured the land for gures and found quite a few manufacturers whos minis t the bill. This list is by no means exhaustive. If youve found some other great manufacturers of 28mm zombies or other Z appropriate units, drop over to the Exploding Goat Games Forums and let everyone know. You can never have too many zombies (unless you look at it from The Enclaves point of view).

You can always make very quick and relatively inexpensive terrain from the pink insulation foam sold at most hardware and home supply stores. Just get a sharp retractable utility knife and cut out hills and other such features. When using any kind of pink, blue or styrofoam, it is important to seal it before using any kind of aerosol propellant paint. The propellant eats away at the foam. We use latex house paint to coat the foam. Once that dries, youve got a pretty tight seal against the propellant. From there you can undercoat your foam any color you choose before covering it with the ocking of your choice. Alternately, you can nd a tremendous selection of pre-made terrain hills at your local brick and mortar hobby store or, if theres not one nearby, online at one of the hundreds of gaming vendors. While the cities were largely overrun by zombies early after the Outbreak, its always amazing to see a table with some high quality buildings representing a city lled with rotters. Every little nook and cranny is a perfect hiding spot for some decaying beast just looking for its next lunch!

Setup

A Human force has been dispatched to search an area If a unit carrying a resource token is killed, leave the for resources. Unfortunately, that area is currently resource token on the table where the last model was infested with Zombies. killed. Another unit can take a ready action to pick up the resource token. Both forces setup along the long edges of the gaming table. The deployment zones should be 28 apart. The players should alternate placing buildings and ruins with the following restrictions: 1. No building or ruin can be placed within either players deployment zone, 2. Each building or ruin must be at least 10 from any other building, ruin, or table edge, 3. At least 6 buildings or ruins must be placed. After all buildings have been placed, place any additional terrain as agreed upon by both players.

Victory Conditions

This scenario is played using victory points. The zombie player earns a number of victory points equal to the value of any unit completely destroyed. Units brought below half their original strength count as half their value. If a human unit with more than 50% of its models remaining retreats without a resource token, earn half their value in victory points. The Human player earns victory points by successfully retrieving resource tokens and keeping their troops alive. A unit that moves off the long table edge in the Human players deployment zone with a resource token earns victory points per the table below. Any unit at full strength still on the board at the end of the game counts its full value in victory points. Any unit still on the board not at full strength but not below 50% earns half its value in victory points. The side with the most victory points wins.

Turn Length

10 Turns or until three resources tokens are retrieved by the human player. No units using the ambush special ability can be placed inside the buildings/ruins. A human unit can search a building/ruin by having at least 5 models from the unit within the building/ruin and taking a ready action.
