AIRBUS APPROACH TO ECO-EFFICIENCY

Aviation a vital, eco-efficient industry

At the heart of modern, global economies An R&D intensive sector that multiplies the effect of innovation across economies worldwide to the benefit of all A fast & safe transport mode; but also eco-efficient with excellent environmental performance when compared to the added value created Further environmental improvements require coordinated actions between all stakeholders

Our vision
We at Airbus are fully conscious that the complex equilibrium that nature has patiently built is fragile We at Airbus are fully committed to minimise our impact on the environment while creating value for the company We believe it is essential to strengthen the necessary research efforts that will help realizing the significant changes & technology breakthroughs for tomorrows sustainability

Airbus commitment to eco-efficient aviation

Airbus develops eco-efficient solutions at every stage of the aircraft lifecycle, from the design, production and operations phases to retirement from service Beyond aircraft alone, Airbus assumes a leading role in improving the overall air transport system at large in cooperation with other industry players (incl. Boeing) and global decision makers to develop operational, policy & governance solutions

What is Eco-Efficiency ?
Eco Efficiency is a business approach which aims at maximising the benefits of our products and services to our customers and other stakeholders while minimising the environmental impact of manufacturing and operating these products throughout their life cycle This is a key step towards sustainability

Eco-efficient advanced materials

Advanced light and hard alloys New joining processes New low energy demanding and low toxics containing composite materials & processes Advanced design by structural optimisation Smart and recyclable structures

Procuring eco-efficiently
Environmentally preferred general goods and purchases Expanding eco-efficiency policy throughout the supply chain and extended enterprise Supporting suppliers to comply with regulatory requirements and to minimize their impacts

Eco-efficient production worldwide

Commitments Vision 2020 : 30% reduction in energy consumption 50% reduction in CO2 emissions 50% reduction in water consumption 80% reduction in water discharge 50% reduction in waste production Minimising disturbance levels Respecting landscape & biodiversity Limiting the impact of oversize transport activities

17 dB margin to current Chapter 4 (27 dB margin to Chapter 3) QC2 for takeoff and QC0.5 for landing at London Heathrow Less than 3l of fuel per pax per 100 km Less than 75g of CO2 per pax per km Minimizing environmental impact through greater network efficiency Alternative fuel flight test (GTL) (Feb 1st, 2008)

Developing eco-efficient bio fuels

At each stage in the traditional distribution chain, carbon dioxide is emitted through energy use by extraction, transport etc.

Carbon dioxide will be reabsorbed as the next generation of bio fuel feedstock is grown
