Scott Occhuizzo NOTE: My experience comes from working with crude refineries. A Distributed Control System consists of control hardware and software that is/can be distributed throughout a process/plant. The data related to this system is brought in through a common interface for the Operator to analyze and command. The DCS consists of the user stations, controllers, and networks that comprise the control system. In my industry, almost all Regulatory Control is performed in the DCS control hardware. A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is a piece of hardware (a controller) generally used for specialty control, such as Turbine Control, Vibration Monitoring or SIS implementation. Most DCS vendors offer Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) options, allowing the data from several different PLCs to be bought in through the common interface hosted by the DCS. For this reason, PLC systems are commonly referred to as SCADA systems. A PLC system is SCADA only, while a DCS can be a combination of SCADA and DCS-vendor controllers. In my opinion, the difference is the method of which the system is integrated together for the end-user. Im sure several others will have their own definition as it relates to their industry/experience.

Scott Occhuizzo The method of system integration you choose to pursue will ultimately be dependent on your process and control objectives.

xin hao simply, PLC is a automation product which only contains hardware and related configuration software, while DCS is a integrated automation platform which may contain many automation products either hardwares or softwares. Normally, DCS means a solution.
