1. INTRODUCTION

The Power Management System (PMS) supplied by Marine Electricals forms part of the Main Switchboard and is used to control and monitor the generators and the Main Switchboard. All components forming part of the PMS system is mounted within the Switchboard. A general over view of the Main Switchboard is shown below

MAIN SWITCHBOARD

The switchboard consists of one Ship load busbar sub-divided into two parts via a bus coupler isolator with two Diesel generators rated 344KW connected to one side and one Diesel Generator of 344KW on other side of the bus coupler. The system is provided with two shaft generator rated 900KW, each connected on Busbar Section No.3 & Busbar section No.4 connected through bus coupler 2. one stern thruster rated 500KW and one bow thruster rated 500KW each connected on Busbar Section No.3 & Busbar section No.4 respectively. The Busbar Section No.3 & Busbar section No.4 are connected to shipload busbar section via Bus coupler 3 & Bus coupler 4 as indicated above. The Power Management system consists of Paralleling and Protection Unit for each generators, a Programmable logic control unit and two Display Unit one on Main switchboard and other on wheel House Control Desk.

2. SCOPE OF SUPPLY
The scope of supply for PMS is as follows : a) b) c) d) Paralleling and protection unit of DEIF Programmable logic controller (Modicon TSX 37 Premium) Paralleling Relay HAS-111DG of DEIF Display unit XBT-F021110

2A. PARALLELING AND PROTECTION UNIT

The PPU of DEIF is a protection and/or control unit for a generator driven by diesel / gas engine or a turbine. It will carry out all necessary tasks to control and protect a generator, regardless of the use of the generator. This means that the PPU can be used for several application types such as: - Stand-alone generator - Multiple generator load sharing control - Fixed load to mains/base load The PPU measuring system is true RMS 3-phase measurement of generator voltage, generator current and bus (mains) voltage.

2.A.1 GENERATOR PROTECTION FUNCTIONS

Protective functions can be selected to activate one or two of the 8 configurable relays (standard). Up to 13 relays can be available depending on the options selection. Please refer to separate description of the relevant option. The standard protection functions in all units are: - Reverse power (inverse or definite characteristic) - Overcurrent (2 levels) (definite characteristic) - Overcurrent (1 level) (inverse characteristic) - Overload - Under/ over voltage of generator - Under/ over frequency of Generator - Under/ over voltage of busbar - Under/ over frequency of Busbar

2.A.2 STANDARD CONTROL FUNCTIONS

The standard control functions in all units are: - Static/Dynamic synchronisation - Frequency matching - Voltage check - Breaker delay time compensation - Phase sequence check - Fixed load (base load) running of the generator - Fixed frequency running of a stand-alone generator - Load sharing between generators with power and frequency control - Relay outputs for speed governor - Relay outputs to close/open generator breaker - Adjustable ramp up/down of generator load - Relay outputs for start/stop of next generator

3. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The operator can control the PMS Function through Operating Display Units from Main Switchboard or from Wheel House depending upon the MASTER/SLAVE selection. The operating display units indicate the system Mimic presentation provides continues updated information on the plant operating condition with all details of present alarms status. The operator can view the present Parameters/sequence set on PMS and can also allow him to set all essential operationing PMS parameters (Password Protected) through Operating panels provided on the Main Switchboard. The below is overview of the operating display with Function Keys. The Main Switchboard has three modes of operation selected through the operating display: manual, semi auto and auto mode. In MANUAL mode, the switchboard operations such as start/stop of generators, synchronizing, load sharing of generators and generator breaker controls are carried out manually. SEMI AUTO mode is an operator initiated AUTO mode. In this mode, Generator Start/ Stop and Generator breaker On/Off functions have to be initiated manually by the operator on corresponding windows on the operating display. To start the generator, press the DG ON button on respective windows on the operating display. Once the generator gets started and running, operator has to press the BKR. ON button. Now PMS takes over and carryout automatic synchronization and load sharing. Blackout start of generator is also active in this mode. In AUTO mode, the Power management system is activated. There are three conditions in AUTO mode, in which the next priority generator gets started, synchronised and shares the load. 1. With load dependant start 2. Available power low with heavy consumer request 3. When running generator has a safety stop signal. In case of a dead switchboard the generator with the highest priority will get a start command from the switchboard. Once started and voltage developed, the generator breaker will be closed and connected to the busbar. Subsequently generators will be started by the PMS, based on the priority set and the load requirement of the Switchboard.

3A. SYSTEM EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION

The Power Management System comprises of three major components as mentioned below: a) Paralleling and protection unit of DEIF b) Programmable logic controller (Modicon TSX 37 Premium) c) Paralleling Relay HAS-111DG of DEIF d) Display unit XBT-F024110 The Paralleling and protection unit (PPU) is used for protection and control of generators. Each PPU will protect the respective generators for reverse power , over-current ,overload, under/over voltage, under/over frequency and will provide preferential trip of non essential load in case of overload/over current. In addition, it is used to synchronise the generators in semi-auto/auto mode and once synchronized, automatically share the load between generators. The PPU also monitors the load on each generator and gives a start / stop command to the PLC to commence operation of starting or stopping the generator of next priority. All Parameters of the generators can be monitored on Display Unit of the switchboard through PLC via modbus communication.
