Merritt to be featured on Global TV

Vancouver-based Huldra Silver Inc. was issued a Mines Act permit late last week for its Treasure Mountain silver mine, 29 km east of Hope. The capital cost of this project is estimated at $12 million and will provide 25 full-time jobs in the area. Treasure Mountain is expected to yield 60,000 tonnes per year from an underground silver-lead-zinc mining operation. The ore from Treasure Mountain will be processed at the Craigmont Mine near Lower Nicola, which operated 1962-1982. Craigmont will receive a permit amendment, and 10 additional jobs will be created at that site. Huldra broke ground last November for the construction of a new mill on the Craigmont site. Treasure Mountain is the 5th new mine permit towards meeting the govt's goal of 8 new mines and 9 expansions by 2015. 5 mines over the last year started construction or are about to begin, including Copper Mountain Mine in Princeton, Mount Milligan near Prince George, New Afton near Kamloops, Barkerville near Quesnel and Red Chris near Dease Lake in northwestern B.C. 5 mines that have been expanded include Highland Valley Copper near Logan Lake, Elkview near Sparwood, Huckleberry near Smithers, Endako near Fraser Lake and Quinsam near Campbell River.

Two new charges were laid against former Merritt RCMP Staff Sgt. Stuart Seib. In addition to charges of theft and breach of trust relating to stealing cocaine from a police evidence locker in Merritt, he has also been charged this week with theft and breach of trust dating back to June 2010 while he worked in Clearwater. Seib was suspended after the allegations of theft and use of cocaine from the locker. He has now resigned from the force and won't face RCMP discipline. An 18-year police veteran, Seib took over the Merritt detachment last November after serving 7 years as the officer in charge of Clearwater RCMP, where he claimed that drug enforcement was a priority.
