FREMONT The date for the
2012 Mud Bowl Mania, mud volley-
ball tournament has been officially
announced Saturday, July 14 and
registration is now open.
Mud Bowl Mania is a mud vol-
leyball tournament, and is about
the easiest and most fun way to get
involved in helping those less for-
tunate in your community. All pro-
ceeds from Mud Bowl Mania will
help TrueNorth Community Services
prevent hunger and homelessness,
and provide meaningful mentoring
opportunities for youth in Newaygo
County.
Organizers expect up to 75 teams
to compete in the tournament this
year. There are only two divisions of
play; one 18-and-under, and one 18-
and-older adult open. Tournament
divisions will be played on very mud-
dy, beach-size courts. Teams may
consist of at least four, or up to eight
players, with up to six on the court
at a time. As this is a co-ed tourna-
ment, at least two of the players on
the court at all times must be of the
opposite sex. All players will receive
a Mud Bowl Mania T-shirt, and med-
als will be awarded to the top teams
in each division.
In addition to the main event,
there will be a community breakfast
in the morning before the tourna-
ment and a benefit drawing with a
number of great prizes including a
deluxe Weber gas grill, a processed
pig, a 10 Water Crest Kayak with two
guided river trips, and a $500 Wesco
gas card provided by Deur Dairy and
Landheer Insurance. Spankys pizza
and world famous breadsticks, along
with other affordable food and bev-
erage items will be available on site,
all day as well.
There is a flat-rate registration
price this year of $150 per team, and
ALL registrations must be received
(e-mailed or postmarked) by July 6,
2012. For more information includ-
ing registration forms visit www.
mudbowlmania.com
On Saturday the 23rd, the
frst event is a free pancake
breakfast at Cowden Lake Bible
Academy at 8 a.m. The parade
will start at 11 a.m. with the line-
up beginning at 9:30 a.m. (no
pre-registration required). Then
a barbecued chicken dinner will
be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
($6 adults, $4 kids, and special
price for families). Chari Miles
and her group will perform old-
time gospel and patriotic music
to entertain the diners. She is a
local gal with quite a following.
There will be 3-on-3 basket-
ball at the CLBA gym, a bucket
brigade relay, horseshoes, and a
soapbox derby as competitions
during the afternoon. Through-
out the afternoon, 150 years of
memorabilia will be on display;
crafters will have booths in the
park; and an antique village and
engine display will be open 1 to
5 p.m. There also will be town-
wide yard sales.
Arrangements have been
made for some special en-
tertainment. Joyce Leonard,
Michigans Yodeling Sweet-
heart, and Tumbleweed Phil
will be appearing from 2 to 5
p.m. at Coral Park. Joyce and
Phil bring you the best in tra-
ditional country, western, and
gospel music. Joyce is an award
winning yodeler and has many
fans all over Michigan. Gordon
the Magician will provide fun
family entertainment at 1 p.m.
and again at 4 p.m. at the Fire-
house. A great success with chil-
dren and adults, he does magic
and puppets. Then, from 7 to 9
p.m., West Michigans Premier
Country Band, Stolen Horses,
will perform original, current,
and traditional country music
live at Coral Park. They are a
very popular group and, with
their energy, connect well with
the crowd.
Bring lawn chairs for these
events so you will be comfort-
able during the performances.
The schedule and events are
subject to change without no-
tice. Come one, come all for a
great day of fun and history.

Newaygo Band participates
in MSBOA State Festival
On the afternoon of Friday, May 4, the Newaygo High
School Symphonic Band traveled to Big Rapids to participate
in the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association State
Festival. Under the direction of Daniel Barnett, Newaygo per-
formed Second Suite in F for Military Band by Holst, Move-
ment I and Movement II (Class AA music) and Deerpath
Dances by Holsinger.
The MSBOA State Festival is an opportunity for ensembles
from member schools to perform a program of three pieces for
adjudication, one of which must be from MSBOAs required
list. Each group is evaluated by three performance judges and
one sight-reading judge. Ensembles are rated on a scale from 1
to 5 with 1 being the highest rating possible. The overall score
is computed using a formula which combines the ratings of
each judge. At the State level, ensembles are held to a higher
level of musicianship in both the performance and sight-read-
ing rooms. Only bands that displayed exemplary skills at the
district level are able to participate at the state level.
The Newaygo High School Symphonic Band left Big Rap-
ids earning a Division 1 (Superior) rating from each perfor-
mance judge and the sight-reading judge. Their overall score
was an outstanding 1. Congratulations Newaygo High School
band members on this excellent performances.

event, was held on May 17, immediately
after Tri County 2012 Senior class night.
The event was well attended, by about 75
percent of TCs class of 2012. The parents
held many kinds of fundraisers, gath-
ered donations from the community, and
planned all of the details for the venue
and entertainment for the evening, which
was all kept a secret, to add more excite-
ment and anticipation for the seniors who
could attend.
The evening began with two busloads
of TC seniors leaving TCHS for their
surprise destination. The students were
excited, singing songs like the wheels
on the bus go round and round on their
way to their destination. After a little
more than one hour, and a short delay at
Evart McDonalds, they arrived at their
fnal destination. The parents had chosen
Spring Hill camp in Evart for their special
celebration Carnival evening.
After a brief welcome, the students
started their celebration with a variety of
food. They all were able to feast on a sub
sandwich and taco bar, while they sur-
veyed the area and the schedule for the
evening. Then, the students split their
time for 2-3 hours participating in several
activities that were unique to Spring Hill.
They went down a Zipline, swam in a pool
with a special waterslide, climbed a Rock
Wall, went on a special Johnny Jump and
other climbing apparatuses. The students
also received beach towels and tee shirts
to wear, and have all of their friends sign,
as the evening fun continued.
Meanwhile, the carnival games began,
where students would earn tickets by
participating, to use to put in containers
numbered for 20 different prizes. These
prizes had been chosen by the parent
committee, because they were items that
young adults would appreciate, simply
for fun, or as they go off to college, or go
to work and fnd their own place to live.
These prizes ranged from gift certifcates,
to electronics, from luggage to cameras.
The students enjoyed the balloon-dart
game, football throw, stand the bottle, a
large blow up relay maze, mega-twister,
candid fun photos and caricature artists,
to name a few of the activities. Then, af-
ter midnight, a DJ was there for several
hours of music and dancing fun, as the
students were able to enjoy an ice cream
bar, along with other treats. The celebra-
tion ended with two of the best events
of the evening. A hypnotist entertained
the crowd with some magic and by hyp-
notizing 14 students, with entertaining
funny imaginary situations that every-
one could really appreciate. Everyone
was wide-awake and were amazed by
how their fellow classmates acted; it was
very funny. Finally, the evening ended
with the awarding of the 20 large prizes,
along with a bag of special gifts for every
senior who attended. These gifts included
a drawstring backpack, some gift cards, a
fash drive, a portable cooler tote and fold-
able laundry hamper. The students were
pleasantly surprised to be honored with
all of these gifts by the parents and com-
munity. Since the TC Senior All-nighter
has ended, we have received many thank
you emails and Facebook messages from
students and parents alike. Thank you
for special night to remember was said
by several students, and is an indication
that the evening was a huge success.
Now that the event is over, due to
the parents planning and the generos-
ity of the community, there are still some
funds remaining after all of the bills have
been paid. Therefore, the committee has
decided to donate approximately $300
to the TC Senior Class charity Devos
Childrens Hospital, as well as to the class
itself, to use for its 5-year class reunion.
Finally, the TC 2012 Senior All Night par-
ent committee would really like to thank
all the parents, businesses, Tri County
staff and the Montcalm County Drug Free
Collaborative, for all of your donations of
funds, gifts, time or simply sharing your
ideas, which helped us make this evening
a success. We know that our TC Class
of 2012 was special, and everyone who
helped us reach our goal is proof of what
a wonderful community we have.

2012 Michigan Notable Author
comes to Howard City
Scott Sparling, author of Wire to Wire, will be speaking
at the Timothy C Hauenstein Reynolds Township Library,
Howard City at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 7. This program is
open to the public and free of charge. Sparlings novel was
recently named a 2012 Michigan Notable Book.
Wire to Wire is Sparlings frst novel. It is a tale of
friendship and loss, and creates a portrait of Northern Mich-
igan in the 1970s. While riding atop a freight car through De-
troit, Michael Slater is nearly killed when his head touches a
power line. After recovering, he hopes to spend his life qui-
etly in the desert; but when he nearly kills a man he returns
to Michigan, seeking out his old train-hopping pal, only to
fnd that his problems follow.
Sparling grew up in the Jackson area and graduated from
Antioch College in Ohio. He now lives outside Portland, Ore-
gon, with his wife and son. In the 1970s and early 80s, Spar-
ling rode freight trains across the United States and Canada.
Parts of Wire to Wire grew out of those travels. Sparling
also runs Segerfle.com, a popular website about the music
of Bob Seger.
Publishers Weekly praised Sparlings debut as well
crafted and thrilling, tying together an obvious love for both
Michigan and railroads with an expert sense of timing and
plot.
Copies of Wire to Wire will available for purchase and
autographing following his presentation. Refreshments also
will be served.

TO THE EDITOR:
Today my elderly aunt lost her home in a
house fre. This could have been prevented
through simply cleaning the dryer vent duct-
work.
She had had health issues for a number of
years and was living there off and on by herself.
As such, this isnt something you think about
cleaning.
She was extremely lucky to have a working
smoke alarm and a second exit in her home
had recently been cleared for a possible emer-
gency.
Im writing this in the hopes that other
people out there who have elderly family liv-
ing alone will stop in and check on them. Make
sure their smoke alarms are working, check the
exits to be sure that they can get out in case of
an emergency and clean the lint of the duct-
work for the dryer. There are other things that
should also be checked and a quick visit to your
local fre department could be life saving.
The years of memories lost in a fre cant be
replaced and neither can a life.

You dont need a will. Well, probably, you dont
need a will.
Its a common misconception that if you dont have
a will or a trust or any other estate plan, your stuff
will go to the state of Michigan when you die. It
will not. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
Well, probably nothing.
When you die with no will, Michigans default
statute rules. That statute has been on the books for
many years. It was drafted by the Legislature with
the help of estate planners and trust lawyers, with
input from representatives of several communities
and associations with the interests of our more elder
citizens in mind. So probably the default statute will
take care of distributing your stuff through probate
if you die without a will.
But the problem is that it might not. No default leg-
islation can perfectly predict every family structure
and the wishes of family members who die without
a will. For example, with no will your estate passes
to your spouse. However if you dont have a spouse,
it passes in equal shares to your children, which
would include children born during your marriage,
and children adopted by you. But if youre a man
who fathered a child while you were not married to
the mother, without a will that child might end up in
a ght with her siblings over your estate.
If youd had a child with your wife before you got
married but your name didnt make it to the childs
birth certicate and you and your wife die in the
same accident, then your parents can try to step in to
take your stuff if you die without a will. Your child
might have to ght for what youd hope shed in-
herit. Probably that will lead to a probate lawsuit.
If you had children from your rst marriage, and
your wife had had children from her rst marriage,
then you two had a child together (more and more a
common scenario), and then your wife died? Prob-
ably you wont like it that you dont get all of her
stuff because she died without a will. Youll get so
much off the top, but youll have to share the rest
with her 2 children and your child together.
When Aunt Clarice, who never married or had chil-
dren, dies without a will at age 88, perhaps you ex-
pect to receive the larger share of her estate. Her
house is worth $85,000. She has a chunk of change
in CDs. You and your spouse have taken care of her
the last 8 years. Perhaps you even retired early to
take care of Aunt Clarice. She promised you shed
remember you in her will. So youre expecting what
you think is a fair chunk. But imagine your surprise
when you learn that Aunt Clarice didnt remember
to make out a will. You wont be happy that her es-
tate will be split by default statute rather unequally
among you, your three siblings, Aunt Clarices three
living siblings, and Aunt Clarices three deceased
siblings 8 children. Bottom line? You could receive
only 1/15th of her estate, perhaps just $10,000 for
all your years of sacrice for her, instead of what
she had promised you. Probably youll end up in a
probate lawsuit ghting all your relatives.
From the moment you have a dependent a spouse,
child, grandchild, or other who depends on you
you owe it to your family to set down your wish for
how to divide your property and debts when you
die. Save them the anger and frustration of hav-
ing to take the shares that the default law will give
them. Save them from probate, and law suits and
family discord that never goes away.
If nothing else, the Michigan legislature has passed
a law that helps people prepare their own wills. Go
to www.michigan.gov and search for the statutory
will. Fill it out. Take it to the bank and sign it before
a notary.
Put your will in your will and end up a winner.
Because if you have no children or descendants or
heirs and no will, then and only then, your estate
will in fact go to the state - probably.

Raw Milk, the Sacred Food?
Last week I wrote an article about the problems with milk. In reality most of these problems come from milk that has been
processed, that is, pasteurized and homogenized.
During the process of pasteurization, milk is heated to 161 degrees to destroy the bacteria that are supposedly harmful to humans.
This heating causes a great deal of damage to the natural benets of milk. The proteins are modied, the natural enzymes are damaged,
good healthy organisms are destroyed, and some healthy fats are changed to Trans fats.
Many of you may remember whole milk that separated. The cream was removed from the top and used to make butter. The
remainder was called skimmed milk and is supposed to be healthy for us. The homogenizing process keeps the cream from separating
from the rest of the milk. The fat in milk is in very large macromolecules which oat. Homogenization is mechanical extruding process
that makes the fat particles very small so they are no longer lighter than the watery part of the milk. This greatly changes our ability to
digest and use the milk fat like nature intended. During the process of homogenization an enzyme called Xanthane Oxidase is released.
In raw milk this enzymes kills pathogenic bacteria, but when broken out of it natural environment it is extremely acidic and foreign to
our body chemistry. It is one of the contributing causes of osteoporosis and arterial inammation.
In primitive cultures, milk, especially butter, was referred to as a sacred food. It was given to both parents before they became
pregnant, a woman during her pregnancy, and to mothers while nursing. Because they did not have refrigeration, and raw milk spoiled
easily, all of these cultures used some form of fermentation to preserve milk products. This includes yogurt, sour cream, cottage
cheese, and all forms of other cheeses. When made from unprocessed milk, these foods can be very benecial.
As I mentioned last week, we still see people who have problems with unprocessed dairy products, but not nearly as much as
processed dairy. There are some that still have lactose intolerance, meaning they do not have the enzymes to digest milk sugar, lactose.
There are some who are allergic to the casein which causes irritable bowel syndrome, Crohns disease, excessive postnasal mucus,
allergic rhinitis, asthma, chronic hives, eczema and other allergic and inammatory conditions.
So, to see if the dairy products are harmful to you, use the two-week elimination / challenge test, or the pulse test. If you can handle
dairy products, we strongly recommend that they be organic and unprocessed. Organic raw milk does not contain any heavy metals,
growth hormone, antibiotics, herbicides or pesticides, greatly reducing toxic loads compared to commercial
milk.
The Weston A. Price Foundation can be helpful to locate raw dairy resources. Their website (www.realmilk.
com) should give you chapter locations as well as the date and location of their annual convention. If you live
near Lakeview, called the store or email, and we can give you contact information for the local chapters.
If you are like me, and cannot tolerate dairy products (neither raw nor processed), dont cry. There are
good alternatives. We recommend rice milk, almond milk, rice yogurt, coconut yogurt, rice ice cream, almond
cheese, and organic goat cheese. We generally do not recommend soy products (like Silk) unless they are
certied organic and made from whole soy. Soy isolates have been known to be very inammatory. Many soy
products contain phyto estrogens. These are not very healthy for males, growing children, or women who have
estrogen dominance and weight issues.

Open Letter To Our Neighbors
In light of recently enacted legislation and ordinances, we felt it necessary to
let you know who we are and what we stand for. First of all, we are medical
marijuana patients and their families. For the most part, we are no different
than you except we chose to take some measure of control over our own
health and care. Most of us have lived for some time with serious debilitat-
ing medical conditions and as such have been treated with a host of drugs
before seeking relief with MMj (medical marijuana). This is what is usually
left out of the conversation. The average MMj patient is 52 years old with a
medical history of being treated with prescribed drugs that have serious side
effects, and about a good chance of being legally disabled. Once we start
medicating with MMj, our use of the other drugs goes down dramatically. So
with that in mind, we present to you from the Center for Disease Control,
Bureau of Vital Statistics, 2008.
Annual American Deaths from:
Tobacco ............. 400,000
Alcohol ............... 100,000
All Legal Drugs .... 20,000
All Illegal Drugs.... 15,000
Caffeine ................. 2,000
Aspirin....................... 500
Marijuana ...................... 0
In the future, we intend to explain how the recently enacted Reynolds Town-
ship MMj ordinance is in violation of MI state law, and the nancial risk of
such to the Township residents plus the ramications of recently enacted
state legislation.
Yours Respectfully,
