1.0 DEFINITION OF SIWES SIWES which was established through Industrial Training Fund (ITF) in 1973, literally mean Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme. It is the skill training program which forms part of the approved minimum academic standard. 1.1 AIM OF SIWES The scheme is aimed at exposing students to industry based skills necessary for smooth transition from the classroom to the world of work. SOME SKILLS ACQUIRED DURING THE PERIOD OF SIWES The work experience scheme was indeed interesting, following the knowledge acquired during the scheme. As a student I thought that there is no any difference between the Microsoft windows operating systems editions such as windows7 starter, windows7 ultimate, and windows7 home basic, windows7 home premium, windows7 professional, and Windows 7 Enterprise edition.
I now know the key difference between them

Which are as follows:-

Windows 7 Starter Edition is the entry-level edition for small notebook PCs and other PCs with limited hardware. It makes using your PC simpler. Key features that you will find in the Starter edition include the following::

Broad Application and device compatibility Safety, reliability, and responsiveness Ability to join a homegroup

Windows 7 Home Basic makes the things you do every day faster and easier. This edition is designed for value PCs in emerging markets. Home Basic includes the following:

Live thumbnail previews Advanced networking support (ad hoc wireless networks and Internet connection sharing) Ability to extend your screen across multiple monitors

Windows 7 Home Premium is the best entertainment experience on your PC. This edition provides full functionality on the latest hardware, easy ways to connect, and a visually rich environment. Youll also get the following:

Advanced window navigation and personalization with several new Microsoft Aero desktop improvements The ability to create a homegroup, so you can easily share files between your networked PCs and devices The ability to watch Internet TV and record TV on your PC with Windows Media Center Remote Media Streaming and improved support for different media formats

Windows 7 Professional is everything you need for work and home. This business-focused edition is great for small- and medium-sized companies, and people who have networking, backup, and security needs and multiple PCs or servers. Youll also get the following:

Domain Join, which gives you the ability to join a managed Windows Server network Advanced Backup and Restore to help you back up your entire system to a home or business network, Encrypted File System to help protect your data Windows XP Mode for running older productivity applications that require Windows XP Location Aware Printing, which helps you set different default printers for your home and work networks

Windows 7 Enterprise. Windows 7 Enterprise, you can take advantage of the following features that
are not available in Windows 7 Professional It includes everything that operating systems needs Microsoft BitLocker and AppLocker DirectAccess and Brachcache Enterprise search Multilingual user interface packs 10

I used the Microsoft word to do a mail merge, by addressing a particular document to various recipients. I used Microsoft viso to design a flowchart and some structure I used the Microsoft excel application to form an inventory on every system in the organization. I used remote desktop connection to connect to server for backup

The interface below show the remote desktop connecting to server was done successfully

11

The interface below is the Symantec backup software application it describe how to run

12

The interface below show how the daily, weekly and monthly backup has been schedules

13

Windows remote assistance is trying to connect to end user for support.

The interface below is showing how remote assistance is offer to end user

14

I used the Microsoft outlook express application, where I picked interest due to it versatility. The application is used to send e-mail, plan schedules, save contact or address books. The outlook express window is divided into the menu bar, toolbars, folder list, preview pane. The use of the outlook application introduced me to internet, due to the requirement to set an e-mail which is a resource only available on the internet. The ISP, which is a requirement, gives an address which has the User Id, Host Name, and a Top level Domain Name. The Microsoft software for an e-mail is the outlook express.

I learnt the naming convention on the internet for locating information called the universal resources locator (URL). A URL is also referred to as a general structure on address.

I learnt about some protocols, especially those used on the internet and some search engines. I learnt how to connect to any system in the domain I learnt how to join systems to domain of MTN. (mtn.com.ng) is the domain name I learnt how to use command line to run some command in the domain and outside the domain

SUMMARY The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a very important program

which exposes students of various field of study to challenges and provides a wide range of chances to learn in areas they lack practical experience. During this scheme, I was able to acquire knowledge in some of the Microsoft application packages, very little on HTML in web design; concentrated more on Microsoft windows express for its thrilling effect on me and its internetworking ability. 4.1 CONCLUSION In simplest of terms, the period of the student industrial work experience scheme (SIWE) with MTN COMMUNICATIONS NIGERIA LIMITED has been a remarkable one as it has established controlled relationship between the staff of centre, the students and me. This gave me the flair to concentrate and learn.

Finally, I will like the department to go strictly into inculcating practical knowledge of Microsoft windows operating systems which will enable student to know more on windows features and the importance.
