Luke Roske-Metcalfe The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Is 40:21-31, 1 Cor 9:16-23, Mark 1:29-39 February 5, 2012 5th Sunday in Epiphany In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen. Brothers and Sisters, I have good news: We are beginning a new year full of hope and anticipation! We are beginning a new year, and with it there is a sense of freedom and freshness. This might sound strange, because our church calendar says we began a new year back in Advent, and because were already in the second month of 2012. In many respects, however, it feels like a new year, because last week we held our annual congregational meeting, and elected a new council and coordinators for the various ministries of our congregation. With this election, we begin again, with new leadership and direction. Whenever we begin something new as a church, I cant help but be filled with hope and a sense of promise for whatever God has in store for us. This is not to say I dont think the previous council wasnt faithful in their service. In fact, I believe the previous council left the church in a better place than when it began. I also think that, through Gods grace, we have been and will continue to move in a positive direction. But with new leadership comes new perspectives, new ideas, and new energy. In a few minutes well commission this newly elected council and these coordinators as leaders of the congregation. We will ask that they follow Gods guidance throughout the year. In many respects, our council will serve as spiritual leaders. Through Gods grace, they will serve this church with their God-given gifts. In a few minutes we will commission this new council and these coordinators. There is a commitment for you to make, too, as a congregation. I will ask you to

faithfully support the council. I will ask you to work with the council in a mutual ministry so that we might, together, proclaim the Good News to the nations! During last weeks congregational meeting, Xochil, our childrens teacher, made a comment. Basically, she said that the council and coordinators cant do this alone. And shes right. The council clearly needs your prayers, but they also need morethey need your support. And thus I pray for you as a congregation and for the council. I pray that God will actively work through the council. I pray that each of you, as members and those who consider this congregation to be your home, will find ways to actively support the council and the coordinators. I pray that if you feel called by God to help maintain the church building, then youll talk to Alejandro. I pray that if you feel called to teach a Sunday school class, then youll talk to Eldaa. I pray that if you feel called to learn about how other congregations live out their faith, then youll talk to Maria de Lourdes. I pray that if you feel called to welcome visitors to this congregation, then youll talk to Debora. I pray that if you feel called to help plan events so that we might spend more time in fellowship as a congregation, then youll talk to Nancy. I pray that if you feel called to plant a garden or start a composting system, then youll talk to Jose Antonio. I pray that if you feel called to help improve our communication and outreach to the community, then youll talk to David. I pray that if you feel called to sing, then youll talk to a choir member. I pray that if you feel called to become a member of this congregation, then youll talk to me. I hope that if you are not sure how God is calling you, then youll talk to one of your newly elected spiritual leaders. I pray that they will warmly welcome and support you because, in the end, this is your faithful response to Gods love, and this is what it means to be church. In this, I hope that if you feel called by God to do something, then you dont do it out of a sense of obligationor out of a feeling that you ought to do something. I hope that you follow your sense of call because of the freedom we have in Christ. Brothers and Sisters, let us welcome this New Year with hope and anticipation. Let us continue this faith journey together, and let us remember that we do all of this not out of obligation, but because we are free in Christ to serve one anotherbecause we are free in Christ to live out our lives as God leads us. And thanks be to God for this. Amen.

En el nombre del Creador, Rendentor, y Sustentador, Amen. Hermanos y hermanas les tengo buenas nuevas: Estamos empezando un ao nuevo lleno de esperanza y anticipacin! Estamos empezando un ao nuevo, y con esto hay un sentido de libertad y renovacin. Esto puede ser un poco raro porque nuestro calendario litrgico nos dice que el ao nuevo empez en Adviento y todava estamos en el segundo mes de 2012. Pero lo siento como un ao nuevo porque la semana pasada tuvimos nuestro junta como congregacin y elijimos un nuevo consejo y coordinadores para los ministerios de la congregacin. Con esta eleccin, empezamos renovados otra vez, con un nuevo liderazgo y una nueva direccin. Cuando empezamos algo nuevo como iglesia, me siento lleno de esperanza y con un sentido de promesa para cualquiera cosa que Dios tenga preparado para nosotros. Esto no quiere decir que no crea que el consejo anterior no fuera fiel en su servicio. La verdad es que creo que el consejo anterior dej a la iglesia en una mejor posicin que cuando empez su tarea. Tambin creo que, por la gracia de Dios, hemos cambiado y continuaremos cambiando en una direccin positiva. Pero, con un nuevo liderazgo, tenemos nuevas perspectivas, nuevas ideas, y nueva energa. Dentro de algunos minutos comisionaremos a un consejo nuevo y a nuevos coordinadores y coordinadoras como lideres de nuestra congregacin. Les vamos a pedir que sigun a Dios como su gua durante el ao que viene. Nuestro consejo nos servir, de muchas maneras, como lideres espirituales. Por la gracia de Dios, los miembros del consejo servirn a r nuestra iglesia con los talentos que han recibido de Dios. Dentro de algunos minutos comisionaremos a un consejo nuevo y a las coordinadoras y los coordinadores. Pero tambin, habr un compromiso de parte de ustedes. Voy a pedirles que apoyen al consejo fielmente. Voy a pedirles que trabajen junto con el consejo en un ministerio mutuo para que podramos proclamar juntos las buenas nuevas a todas las naciones! Durante la junta de la congregacin, Xochil, la maestra de nuestros pequeos, hizo un comentario. Bsicamente nos dijo que el consejo y los coordinadores no pueden ser lderes de la congregacin solos. Y ella tena razn. Claro que s, el consejo necesita sus oraciones, pero lo que necesita ms es su apoyosu participacin.

Por eso oro por ustedes como congregacin y por el consejo. Oro que Dios obre activamente a travs del consejo. Oro que cada uno de ustedes, como miembros, y tambin por ustedes que consideran esta iglesia su casa, que encuentren maneras de apoyar, activamente, al consejo y los y los coordinadores y coordinadoras. Oro que si ustedes sientan el llamado de Dios para ayudar con el manteamiento de las instalaciones de la iglesia, hablen con Alejandro. Oro que si ustedes sienten la llamada por Dios para ensear en la escuela dominical, hablen con Eldaa. Oro que si ustedes sienten el llamado de Dios para aprender como otras congregaciones viven su f, hablen con Maria de Lourdes. Oro que si ustedes se siente llamados por Dios a dar la bienvenida a visitantes de la congregacin, hablen con Dbora. Oro que si ustedes se sienten llamados por Dios a ayudar en la planeacin de los eventos de la iglesia, hablen con Nancy. Oro que si ustedes se sienten llamados por Dios a mejorar nuestro comunicacin en la comunidad, hablen con David. Oro que si ustedes se sienten llamados por Dios a cantar, hablen con alguien del ensamble. Oro que si ustedes se sienten llamados por Dios a ser miembros de la congregacin, hablen conmigo. Espero que si no estn seguros de cmo Dios est llamndoles, hablen con uno de los lderes de la congregacin. Oro porque ellos les recibn y apoyen con mucho cario porque al final, esta es su respuesta de fe en el amor de Diosy esto es que significa ser la iglesia. En esto, espero que si sienten el llamado de Dios a hacer algo, no lo hagan con sentido de obligacino con un sentido de que deben hacer algo. Espero que sintiendo que es el llamado de Dios para ustedes porque saben que han recibido liberacin en Cristo. Hermanos y Hermanas, damos la bienvenida al ao nuevo con esperanza y anticipacin. Continuamos el camino de fe juntos, y recordamos que todo lo que hacemos no es con un sentido de obligacin, sino porque estamos libres en Cristo para servir el uno al otroporque estamos libres en Cristo para vivir nuestros vidas como Dios nos gua. Y gracias a Dios por esto. Amn.
