CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the research, significance of the research. 1.1 Background of the Study In Indonesia, English is the first foreign language that has been taught from elementary schools up to university levels. Therefore, learning to master English is important. In learning English, it is necessary for students to master the four language skills, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The completeness of these aspects we can see the extent to which the ability to speak one's who have mastered the English language. Because not a few people who judge only a good English language skills of their speech. Learning model is the foundation of the practice learning outcomes decline in educational psychology theory and the theory of learning that are designed based on the analysis of the implementation of the curriculum and its implications at the operational level in the classroom. (Suprijono, 2010: 45-46)learning model can be interpreted also as a pattern that is used for the preparation of curriculum, organize the material and member guidance to teachers in the classroom.

Cooperative learning is learning that provides opportunities for learners to collaborate with fellow learners in structured tasks. Cooperative learning is known as learning in groups. Cooperative learning is more than just a study group or working in cooperative learning groups because there are structures that push or cooperative task that allows the interaction in an open and effective relationship is interdependence among group members.(Chotimah,dkk,2009:2)employment

relationship as it allows the emergence of a positive perception of what can be done by learners to achieve learning success is based on the ability of the individual self and the donations from members of other groups during the study together in groups. Throwing Snowball type of cooperative learning is learning that can be used to provide learning materials that are difficult concepts to students and can be used to determine the extent of knowledge and skills of students in such materials. So, the study is hoped to answer wheter or not, throwing snowball type of cooperative learning applied in the teaching speaking that can improve the eleventh year students of Senior High School are, appropriate and they can stimulate the students creativity.

In this study, we have several goals, including the following :

1.4 Significant of the Study The result of the researcher is purely significant as it can be meaningful for the teachers, students and other researcher. 1.4.1 For the Students The implementation of the throwing snowball type of cooperative learningcan add new experience in learning English, specially reading. It gives they an interest and enjoyable within English classes, and they can experience real uses of English. Finally, it is expected that it can increase the students achievement in learning English. 1.4.2 For the teacher Research finding on the students ability in speaking competition instruction using throwing snowball type of cooperative learning will be meaningful. Contribution to the teacher to apply and select the appropriate method of teaching speaking in Senior High School level. So they can achieve the goal. 1.4.3 For the further researcher

Hopefully, this study becomes a reference in conducting other research about speaking. Particular, speaking a composition using throwing snowball type of cooperative learning.

1.5 Hypothesis The hypothesis on the study of a using throwing snowball type of

cooperative learning as an instruction media used in teaching speaking can improve the students speaking skill.
