The property class symbol consists of two figures, the first figure indicates 1/100 of the nominal tensile strenght (Rm) in MPa and the second figure indicates 10 times the ratio between yield stress ReL (or stress at 0,2% non proportional elongation Rp0,2 ) and nominal tensile strenght Rm.

(1) Free cutting steel is allowed for these property classes with the following maximum values: S=0,34% - P=0,11% - Pb=0,35%. (2) For nominal diameters above 20 mm the steels specified for class 10.9 may be necessary in order to achieve sufficient hardenability. (3) The class 10.9 is different from 10.9 because of the minimum tempering temperature.

For every tensile class, we have included a list of grades, to be considered exclusively as an example, because the mechanical properties depend on the type of screw and on the production route. The example included in the table refer to the european standard ISO 898-1: 99. For the ASTM A193 refer to the relevant pages in the chapter Special steels.

(1) Even though these grades dont fully satisfy the standard, they are frequently used, subject to agreement between manufacturers and users of fasteners. (2) Grades that can satisfy the mechanical properties only in cold drawn condition. (3) For this classes is necessary the quenching and tempering.
