Who do you think is most likely to be dissatisfied with their physical appearance, men or women?

There was a ground breaking book written with hundreds of statistics about this topic. Incredibly, men in America have become obsessed with their bodies. This book was written jointly by Harrison pope and Katharine Phillips, Professors of psychiatry at Harvard and Brown University and by Roberto Olivardia, a clinical psychologist at McLean hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts. They have used a very unique term for this condition Adonis Complex which refers to Greek mythology describing gorgeous half man and half god.

Their research lasted for about 15 year long involving more than 1,000 men. The book argues that the men desperately try to look like Adonis because they constantly see the ideal, steroid-boosted bodies of actors ad models and because their muscles are all they have over women today.

In modern days when women fly combat missions, the authors ask, what can boy or man do to distinguish himself as being masculine? To achieve this masculinity, the abuse of steroids has gone through the roof. One contributing factor is the readily available steroids in the black market. One report from Drug Enforcement Administration in USA state that the percentage of all high school students who have used steroids has increased 50 % in the past years from 1.8% to 2.8%. National Institute on Drug Abuse in turn launched a campaign in gyms, malls, bookstores, and clubs and on the internet to warn teenagers about the dangers of using steroids. The body-building world and Hollywood are no exception and is seeing the use of steroid to create big bodies. Harrison Pope did a comparison and found

that the winner of 1943 Mr. America, Jules Bacon, did not stand a chance even against a 16-year old working out in gym today. Pope exclaims, "He couldn't even win a county body-building contest today. So why would men try to look like Hulk Hogan (A wrestler with big muscles)? Pope, Phillips and Olivardia say the Adonis Complex works in different ways for different men. Michael, 32, one of their research subjects told TIME he had been a short kid who got picked on always. So he picked up a muscle magazine started working out at a gym. But all this effort wasnt making him as big as the men in the pictures. More and more men these days are facing the pressure to conform to an impossible ideal. It has become a socio-cultural norm to associate muscularity with masculinity. There are many modern day misconceptions about masculinity:
1. A super confident macho type, like "The Fonz" on Happy Days.

2. A Schwarzenegger physique. ' 3. A strong and tough hero like Tarzan, Baretta, James Bond or Superman. 4. A crude and coarse potbe11ed drinker who swears and uses vulgar language. 5. One who is arrogant and fiercely competitive and feels that he must win at all costs.
6. The know it-all who enjoys intimidating others.

Instead true masculinity lies in men holding the qualities mentioned below: a. He likes a challenge and is a planner with daring, aggressive and bold ambitions.

b. He is a deep thinker who likes to tackle and conquer problems. c. He is unshakeable, unmoveable and deeply grounded in the truth. d. He will not compromise his principles, yield to temptation, or break under pressure. e. He is self-assured and confident. He knows where he is going and what he wants out of life

f. He controls his temper, disciplines his moods and monitors his overall attitude.

Here are some more practical areas by that define the true manhood.

Having Character: One might ask, What exactly is character? __ It is knowing right from wrong, turning form the wrong and doing what is right, even in the face of pressure and temptations to give in. These Characteristics needs to be exercised in all areas of life__big and small. Taking Initiative and using Common Sense Setting Goals and Having a Purpose in Life Being Bold and Confident: lets not confuse these two properties with arrogance and cockiness. One needs to be bold to in a way to showing strong convictions.

One great way of obtaining true masculinity is studying the lives of real men. Reading biographies and autobiographies of such men will help learn about strength, honor, duty, virtue etc. One important thing must be stressed here; To become a true man does not mean to become like another yellow pencil in the box. Everybody had different personalities; the world would be a boring place if it were not the case.
