Games for teaching English to children

Parts of the body Prepare stickers with the words for different parts of the body on them. Start the lesson by a rendition of Head, shoulders, knees and toes, encouraging students to join in. Song gets quicker and quicker until no one can keep up. After this drill the words for other body parts, either using a picture or pointing to your own body. Then ask, Where is your? etc. Split class into teams. Each team has a sheet of stickers with body part words on. Each team chooses one member to be labelled. The teams have 30 seconds/1 minute to label as many body parts as possible the team who finishes first or gets the most body parts correctly labelled wins. Split class into pairs and they complete the word-verb matching handout. Elicit complete sentences using the verbs and words from handout. Make sure that students practice 1st-3rd singular and plural forms. Family Tree Draw your own family tree on the board, then tell the class a few things about each member of your family (for lower levels stick to age, where they live, their hobbies etc for higher levels also talk about their profession, personality, etc). You can put some lexis on the board if you feel its necessary, although the aim is to encourage the students to describe their family members without prompts so that they can practise natural speech as opposed to parrot-like repeating. Each student draws their own family tree which they then present to a partner, telling their partner about their family members. *While theyre doing this, observe and make notes to prepare a short quiz for the final activity this will ensure that the students pay attention to the next part which involves each student presenting information to the class. Each student now gives a short presentation on their partners family tree and describes their partners family. Before they begin, explain that everyone must listen carefully because there will be a quiz at the end with a prize for the winner. TAKE THE FAMILY TREES AWAY TO AVOID CHEATING!

Quiz Ask questions about the classs family members, e.g. Whose mum is a hairdresser? Does Federicos Dad play tennis? To avoid the students all calling out at once, explain that if they know the answer to the question they must stand up and not shout out the answer until prompted comprehension check this rule!
STUDENTS CANT ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT THEMSELVES, SO MAKE SURE THAT THERE ARE THE SAME AMOUNT OF QUESTIONS ABOUT EACH STUDENT.
