A run-of-steam station with an installed capacity of 15, 000 kW operates at 15% load factor when it serves as a peak load station. What should be the lowest discharge in the stream so that the station may serve as the base load station? It is given that the plant efficiency is 75% when working under a head of 20 m. Also calculate the maximum load factor of the plant when discharge in the stream rises to 20 cumec. [20] A run-off-river hydroelectric power station is proposed across a river at a site where a net head of 25 m is available on the turbine. The river carries a sustained minimum flow of 30 m3/sec in dry weather and behind the power station sufficient pondage is provided to supply daily peak load of demand with a load factor of 71%. Assuming the plant efficiency of 56.4%, determine the maximum generating capacity of the generator to be installed at the power house. If the daily load pattern indicated 21.5 hours average load and 2.5 hours of peak load, determine the volume of pondage to be provided to supply the daily demand. [20] It is contemplated to develop a run-off-river plant on a river. The variation of discharge with head was recorded as follows. Plot the power duration curve. Discharge (cumec) 100 180 215 260 325 370 460 600 700 Head (m) 13.0 12.0 11.75 11.5 11.25 11.0 10.0 9.5 9.25 [20] 4. What is meant by economical diameter of a penstock? How can it be found out? [20] A Penstock Pipe, 750 m long, takes off from A reservoir and feeds water to a turbine, the level of which is 220 m below the reservoir water level. The first 250 m length of the penstock has a cross sectional area of 5 m2 and the rest has an area of 3 m2. The steady state discharge is 9 m3/s. If the turbine gates are closed in a period of 4.5 seconds completely at a uniform rate, what would be the water hammer pressure developing? Use Allievi charts and neglect the friction effects. Assume the wave velocity to be 1000 m/s. [20] Max.Marks:100
