Foreign Madrichim Application Form 2012 Habonim Dror SA Summer Machaneh

Dear Foreign Applicant Habonim Dror Southern Africas (HDSA) December Machaneh is the premier event in the communitys youth movement calendar. This year, we are once again expecting over one thousand people to take part in the magic of Machaneh Lev HaNoar The Heart of the Youth. The movement places great value on outside input into education, methodologies and the spirit of machaneh. As a result, we look to recruit foreign madrichim to join us for this experience. The dates for Machaneh 2012 are as follows: Madrichim Advanced Guard: 30st November 8th December Machaneh: 9th December 28th December Rear-guard: 28th December 30st December
Should the above dates not suit your vacation, please inform us as soon as possible.

(compulsory) (compulsory) (compulsory)

Fees and travel: None of the madrichim at HDSA are paid, in fact madrichim pay a fee in order to attend and work at machaneh. This is the reality of our financial position and the commitment of our Bogrim. In addition, Habonim Dror SA does not have a budget sufficient for flying out the number of foreign madrichim which we expect to accommodate at machaneh. We thus look to the applicant to pay his or her airfare to Cape Town (including domestic flights within South Africa). However, due to the value we place on our foreign contingent, you will be charged no fee for the machaneh itself. Should your application be accepted, we will expect you in Cape Town on the morning of 30 November. Habonim Dror Southern Africas Machaneh is a unique and inspiring experience. This is the quintessential event on the SA Jewish calendar, where you will meet friends for life, you will sing, you will dance, and where you will engage intensely with intelligent and passionate channichim and fellow madrichim. Please read the attached pages carefully and complete them in full. We look forward to receiving your application. Aleh Vehagshem (Go up and fulfil) Gemma Cowan

Rosh Chinnuch

A little about Machaneh Lev HaNoar

Habonim Dror Southern Africa Machaneh is a famous event, and is the largest machaneh in the Habo world, with around 1000 chevre attending from across South Africa, Zimbabwe and even Mozambique. The machaneh takes place near a little town called Onrus (1 and hours outside Cape Town) on a campsite located at the river mouth of the Onrus River. This year the camp will run from December 9th-28th for channichim. All madrichim are expected to attend from November 30th Dec 30th. However, we would suggest that you come a few days earlier in order to get to know rest of the South African madrichim in the machaneh build-up. At the end of machaneh, madrichim return to Cape Town. This year, the camp is called Lev HaNoar The Heart of the Youth. The theme of the camp will permeate every aspect of the machaneh education, as we learn about the future of the Jewish People, challenges facing the world and Israel and work together to achieve our goals. Despite this overarching theme, the shichavot (age-groups) run autonomously on the large campsite. Six shichavot operate, each with its own tzevet (team) of around 20 madrichim, led by a Rosh and Sgan (head and deputy). The shichavot range in size from between 80 and 170 channichim. A huge amount of planning goes into organising such a machaneh, meaning that e-mail contact is imperitive between the foreign madrichim and the local roshim. Once at machaneh, there will be ample opportunity to provide meaningful input into the day-to-day running of your shichvah. The camp is managed and guided logistically, financially and educationally by a five-person team (the Vaad Poel steering committee), which includes the Rosh Machaneh, Sganei Rosh Machaneh, Rosh Chinnuch and Machaneh Organiser. There is a large complement of about 20 Israelis at the machaneh, which include full-time shlichim, short term shlichim and madrichim. To run effectively, the camp also hosts a wide range of other staff including a full medical team, security personnel, life-guards, cooks and office staff. A regular day for a madrich will involve three peulot with the shichvah, 2 meetings of the tzevet and a substantial amount of time to engage the channichim on a personal level or in smaller discussion groups. Usually, there exists a wide range of channichim at machaneh, ranging from those who attend for real ideological engagement to those who come for fun, independence, and bit of learning on the side. Issues dealt with are probably similar to Habonim Dror around the world regarding Jewish identity and Zionism, although we also deal with local South African issues. The vibe and ruach of machaneh is almost always listed as a highlight amongst foreign madrichim. At machaneh, we try to create an ideal Habonim Dror society which plays a role in everything that we do, the entire camp is created by the channichim and madrichim. We do all our own cooking and cleaning. A kitchen staff of Bogrim consisting of about 15 people, aided by a rotation of channichim, prepare the meals. Afterhours, madrichim congregate around a campfire to share stories, relax and even debate, usually accompanied by a guitar and that really special Habo feeling. This atmosphere is what helps create incredible and lasting bonds amongst the Bogrim at machaneh.
