1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Preliminary The use of these instruments is dedicated ESCLUSIVELY to instructed people. The purpose of this manual is to give the necessary informations for a correct and safe use of the product. Those are derived from a continue, systematic elaboration of all the theoretical data and technical trials results registered and validated by the Builder, in conformity with its safety and quality rules.. . All the technical data reported in this manual are dedicated ESCLUSIVELY to specialized users able to interact with the instrument in full safety either for people, either for the machinery, either for the surrounding environment, recognizing every anomalous working condition and making simple procedures of verification, according to the safety current rules. All the informations regarding commissioning, mounting, demounting, set-up and installation of every accessory device are intended and indeed feasible only and in exclusive way by specialized people or directly by SITEL Control technical support peoples, in full agreement with the current safety and health rules. All SITEL Control product cannot by rule be repaired or disassembled at component level on field. For a correct use of the product is necessary to guarantee the readability and the conservation of the present manual, also for future consultation. In case of loss or damage of this manual, or even only for matters of technical or operation deepening, please call SITEL Control technical support. To avoid to find problems in the use of SITEL Control instruments is strictly indispensable that the user BEFORE TO START TO OPERATE reads with deep attention all the informations contained in the present manual. After, to access easily to the disordered informations please refer to the index located at the start of this manual.

WARNING
DO NOT EVER SEPARATE FOR ANY REASON THE FIBRE OPTICS FROM THE OPTICAL-HEAD AND FROM THE INSTRUMENT ELECTRONICS. THIS WOULD CAUSE THE LOSS OF THE INSTRUMENT CALIBRATION WHICH CAN ONLY BE RESET AT SITEL CONTROL LABORATORIES AND THE WARRANTY WOULD IMMEDIATELY DECAY. 1.3 Instrument overview The fibre optic optical thermometers SITEL Control of SYSTEM F and TWO COLOR SYSTEM F series are designed and manufactured to operate in an extremely reduced space without affecting their measuring performance, or whenever it is impossible to install a traditional optical thermometer because of too high room-temperatures or strong electro-magnetic interferences. This result has been achieved by coupling the optic measuring-head, having very little dimensions, through a special fibre optics cable to the signal-conditioning electronics, housed in a separate case which can easily be installed far from the measuring-point. Both the measuring-head and the fibre optics have been manufactured with a special technology free of any bonding agent, allowing their operation at room-temperatures up to 450C. The electronic processing is completely digital and the temperature data are provided through an analogue output (4-20 mA, or on request 0-20 mA or 0-5 V)., or through an user configurable RS485/RS232 serial interface; an LCD display displays directly the temperature value on board of the instrument; On request they can be equipped with a laser pointer to ease its correct alignment with the target object These thermometers are manufactured in two versions, different for the measuring technique used: the monochromatic version, that use a single infrared wavelength to make the measurement and the ratio version, that use the ratio of energy at two different infrared wavelength for give the measure.

2 - GENERAL DESCRIPTION
2.1 Mechanical specifications The measuring-head is manufactured in stainless-steel suitable for aggressive environments; it is absolutely watertight for hydrostatic heads up to a pressure of 1 meter water-column. The fibre optics cable too is protected by a stainless-steel sheath. The conditioning-electronics is housed in an aluminium alloy case, protection IP65. Please refer to the following illustration for any dimensions.

3 - COMMISSIONING
3.1 Measuring area An optical thermometer detects temperatures according to the amount of infrared rays irradiated by the measuring surface. Said surface has a circular shape and a diameter depending on the distance from the pyrometer: as the distance increases, its dimensions will. The measure is proportional to the mean of the temperatures within this area. A ratio is set, different for each pyrometer, between the target distance and said diameter; a 50:1 ratio means that at 1-m distance the targets diameter will be (1000:50) = 20 mm. The ratio depends on how the pyrometers optics is manufactured and particular instruments for specific values can be supplied. Here below you will find a graphic description of the measuring area increasing as distance increases. On request at the order, M and H models will be optionally equipped with an integrated laser pointer to ease the pyrometers pointing on the target object. Please note the following considerations:

Below the minimum distance the optics is no longer focused; the use of the instrument under such conditions requires some special precautions, most of all if the measuring object is rather small. Usually it is essential that the measuring area should be a little smaller than the hot object ; if the area is bigger, the pyrometer will average its temperature and the one of the background (erroneously); if both areas have about the same dimensions, then the pointing process will be critic; whilst if the measure target is much smaller than the object, you will obtain a measure with a high sensitivity to the local temperature gradients, since the effect of averaging over the area is not being taken into account.

3.2 Fixing method The pyrometer head is threaded to allow the head to be fixed, as an example, on a flange. The electronics case can be fastened as you prefer, using the two clearance holes accessible by removing the upper cover. Please note the following considerations: DO NOT make any fixing-holes on the pyrometers head As for the electronics, choose a position as sheltered as possible from heat, vibrations, collisions and dust DO NOT squash the fibre optics by using hose-clamps too tight; the minimum bending radius for the fibre optics is 50 mm DO NOT EVER SEPARATE for any reason the fibre optics from the optical head, nor from the electronics. This can be done only at SITEL Control laboratories, because a complete recalibration of the instrument will then be necessary. It is not possible to do that on site.

3.3 Cooling and air-cleaning system The fitting accessory FT-PG is available on request. It is a fixing flange with a quick coupling and release to the optical head and equipped with an air-cleaning system for the lens and a wall-tube: the cleaning-air will keep the lens free from dust and rubble, which could cause remarkable measure errors if they occluded it even partially. The same air keeps the optical heads temperature at suitable values even in applications with very high room temperatures or radiance. The air range has to be tried out by experimenting, in order to achieve the results described above; the air itself must be clean, free from any oil or humidity trace. If necessary, provide suitable filters.

3.4 Power supply The power supply specifications have already been described at paragraph 2.2. We recommend what follows: Use cable-leads to properly lay the cables and tight them accordingly Connect the ground for the necessary electrical safety and an improvement of the rejection of the instrument to any electromagnetic interferences If the instrument is powered by low direct or alternate voltage, choose the lowest value whenever possible. The instrument can also be powered by a 12 V battery. NOTE: Powering the instrument by very different tensions than those described at paragraph 2.2 of this manual, you will risk to seriously damage the instrument and all its connections. SITEL Control srl will not be directly or indirectly responsible for any damages to people or equipments caused by failing to observe the present warning.

3.5 Analogue interface SYSTEM F and TWO COLOURS SYSTEM F are equipped with a 4-20 mA standard analogue interface linear on the instruments measuring range (the analogue output can be supplied optionally as 0-20 mA or in tension 0-5, or 1-5, or 0-10 V). It is intended to allow the instrument connection to the suitable analogue inputs of PLC, LED, recorders, industrial PCs by a simple two-wire connection. The use of analogue interfaces requires some precautions and the scrupulous respect of the possible connection schemes. For any further details, please contact SITEL Control technicians. Please consider the following : it is advisable to use a shielded twisted cable as a connection cable, especially if it is very long ; in very noisy environments we suggest to connect a 1 F filter condenser directly on the input terminals of the receiving instrument ; the current-loop is powered directly by the instrument, so you DO NOT need (in fact it is dangerous) any series connection of external power supplies, differently from the two-wire sensors ; the maximum load allowed is about 1000 ohm; the minimum is 400 ohm. If the connected devices present a much lower impedance (possibly 2.49 ohm), we suggest a series connection of the 470 ohm/2W provided resistor ; the instrument can stand the net short-circuit on the current-loop for a maximum of 30 seconds. Note: Setting the average control on 9 and then power-up the instrument it is possible to choose a special testing mode for the current-loop: if everything is properly connected and perfectly working, the instrument will supply, on this mode, a constant current of 12.00 +/- 0.02 mA.

3.6 Optional digital interface The optional digital output of the instrument, user selectable half-duplex RS485 type or RS 232 type, is mainly intended for the connection of SITEL Control digital LED S4 and S20 or PC-based systems. or to PLC and PC based acquisition software All details about the communication protocol, specific but easy to be implemented, are available on request at SITEL Control.

4 PROGRAMMING
Opening the rear door of the enclosure,( this can be done by press at centrally the lower part) it is possible ti access to 4 rotary decadic switches an to 12 DIP switches that allow to set-up the instrument configuration. Picture xx: Configuration on-board controls

4.1 Set-up of I/O configuration DIP-SWITCHES DIP switch 1: It is used to allow the manual power up of the LASER pointer if the instrument is equipped of it. When the LASER is activated, on the display it will be indicated by the activation of all decimal points . DIP switch 2: It is active only on ratio thermometers version; it allows to set a + 0,005 offest on non-greyness value. No fucnction on monochromatic thermometers. DIP switches 3 and 4: no any function, reserved for future or special implementation. Please leave ON OFF position

The instrument is shipped configured for analog 4-20 mA output linear on the measuring range of the instrument. VERY IMPORTAN NOTICE: Any different combination of these dip switches are not allowed and may cause serious damages to ether the instrument either the the attached equipments and make warranty immediately deceased.

4.2 Emissivity compensation (monochromatic models) This value is selectable by the two rotary decadic switches E x10 and E x1 (00 =100; 20 = 0,20) The selected value will be shortly displayed on the on-board display either on the power-up sequence of the instrument, either when this value is modified , in the form X: XX (i.e. an emissivity of 0,80 will be indicated as 0:80) We would like to remind you that the emissivity of a body can be defined as the ratio between the radiation emitted by the surface of the body itself and the one emitted by an ideal black body at the same temperature. Figures range from 0 (ideal mirror) to 100% (ideal black body) and depend on various characteristics like the kind of material, surface roughness, positioning-angle between pyrometer and surface.In the following pages you will find the emissivity values of some materials valid for orthogonal incidence and medium roughness surface: they will have to be adjusted by experimenting, according to the materials peculiar characteristics.

4.3 Non Greyness (Ratio models) The non-greyness constant is selectable using the two decadic rotary switches NG x 1 e NG x 0,1 (00 =1,000; 80 = 0,800); a further step of 0,005 is selectable by the dip-switch nr 2 (from left). The selected value is visualized shortly on the LCD display either at the start.up of the instrumente, either during its modifying, in the form X: XX (eg, a factor of 0,80 will be indicated as 0:80), if it is activated the further term 0,005, during the display of the term X:XX will be displaied also a in the top left corner of the LCD display. The allowed values are between 0,750 and 1,250 It is to be remembered that the non-greyness factor of an object is defined as the discordance from the emissivity behaviour of the object itself at the wavelength variations and to one of the ideal Plank grey-body; it is depending from several factors, as the kind of material,, its superficial roughness, the sight angle between the optical axis of the thermometer and the surface of the body, the obscurance factor of the target (smoke, powder, steam, etc). It is to be determined experimentally at the installation of the instrument in order to obtain a correct temperature measurement.

4.4 Mobile average This function, deactivable setting its rotary switch to [0], allows to stabilize readings in case of moderate oscillations, for instance, in presence of steam, smokes, material discontinuities or disuniformities, mechanical vibrations, etc Little temperature oscillations of the same order of the selected time will be practically cancelled, while oscillation of greater entity will be detected in smorzed way. The selected value will be sown shortly on the LCD Display at the start-up of the instrument or whenever it will be modified by the usre with the format ~ XX . The mobile average is defined as as the number of successive measures on which to calculate the average of signal (remembering and considering the last n-1 previous measures); using this function is possible to reject spurious measures due to environmental interferences.

4.5 Peak decay This function, that can be deactivated by turning its rotary switch to [0], changes the operational mode: the pyrometer follows in real time the temperature increase, while when this decreases the measure goes down only with the programmed accurate rate of fall.

6 - MAINTENANCE
The thermometers of SYSTEM F and TWO COLOUR SYSTEM F series, if correctley insatlled, behave with an extremely high and durable reliability .

If the instrument for accidental reasons should break down, please send it back to SITEL Control laboratories for inspection and eventual repairs. Dont try to make by yourself and remember that the instrument cannot be repaired on field for the fact that its check and calibration require especially made equipments that cannot be moved from SITEL Control laboratories. ANY VILOTAION TO THIS RULE PERMANTLY INVALIDATE ANY WARRANTY AND DECLINE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE BUILDER TO DAMAGES TO PEOPLE OR THINGS. Following are described the sole routinely maintenance operations that can be performed by the user : 6.1 Cleaning An optical thermometer sees the measuring object through its frontal lens: if this is dirty, wet or scratched the thermometer can no longer measure. Its than necessary to periodically check the lens and eventually clean it: The lens is made in optical glass, so you can use a normal detergent to clean it

6.2 Air purge control The purge and cooling air must be always dry and clean so its necessary to check the filter periodically and eventually substitute it. 6.3 Calibration control The control of the correct instrument calibration can be done only through a sophisticated instrumentation and this is possible only at the SIETL Control laboratory. Usually this is not necessary due to the components and the sensors employed, but after a long period of time it could be necessary to perform a recalibration, especially due to the mechanical degradation of the optical surface

7 - RISKS ANALYSIS
The SYSTEM F and TWO COLOUR SYSTEM F series instruments have been designed to respond to the usual safety regulations; there wont be any risk for the operators if employed correctly. Please do not use the instrument for purposes different from the ones it has been built for. SYSTEM F and TWO COLOUR SYSTEM F has not been designed for applications where a malfunctioning can be hazardous to human life or cause great economical and/or environmental damages. Please pay attention to the following details.

7.1 Dazzling risk from LASER radiation The SYSTEM F and TWO COLOUR SYSTEM F pyrometers can be equipped with a LASER pointer which facilitates its pointing on the measuring object; please do not stare into the LASER beam with a naked eye, nor through an optical instrument. This could cause an eye lesion.

8 ACCESSORIES The SYSTEM F and TWO COLOUR SYSTEM F series instruments have been designed for the best operation versatility, integrating in each instrument the most common processing functions. The following digital LED are available at SITEL Control; they are perfectly compatible with SYSTEM F and TWO COLOUR SYSTEM F series instruments and very useful in case you need to visualise the temperature on a remote panel. 1.
