PATRON OF ELEPHANT PARADE SINGAPORE

I am honored and extremely happy to be the patron of the Elephant Parade Singapore for the following reasons. First, I believe that there is an inextricable link between man and nature. The future of humankind is dependent on the health of the earths ecosystem. If we continue to extinguish various forms of biological diversity, at the rate we are doing, we will eventually destroy the earths ecosystem. When that happens, we will endanger life on earth. This important truth is the reason which led the Earth Summit, in 1992, to adopt the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. Second, it is therefore both morally right and in our own self-interest to respect and preserve the natural world. Animals are part of nature. As a result of the loss of habitat, illegal trapping and hunting and unethical habits of consumption, many species of Asian animals are either extinct or critically endangered. Of the larger animals, the Asian elephant, tiger, rhino, bear, orangutan and snow leopard are on the critical list. Let us do everything we can to preserve these magnificent animals in their natural habitats. Third, the Elephant Parade Singapore is the largest public art installation ever held in Singapore. Come November, the streets and public spaces of Singapore will display over 100 life-size baby elephants. The elephants have been decorated by artists, designers, celebrities, students and corporate leaders. It will be an inspiring experience and will raise public awareness of the importance of conservation in general, and saving the Asian elephant from extinction in particular. Tommy Koh Chairman, Preparatory Committee for the Earth Summit and Chairman of the negotiations at the Summit UNEPs Champion of the Earth (2006)

AMBASSADOR OF ELEPHANT PARADE SINGAPORE

Though emerging markets in Asia have long been called Asian Tigers, the multiple aspects of Asias growth create a perfect storm challenging Asian elephants. Economic growth among the varied economies of Asia includes commercial logging as well as expansion of cities as Asias human population becomes more affluent. Human encroachment into elephant habitats comes in varied forms. Expansion of farmlands bringing farmers into conflict with elephants, bad management practices contaminating fresh water supplies, and overall urbanization without considered planning all present growing strains upon elephant populations. Asias continued population growth also exacerbates both urbanization and the competition for natural resources between humans and ever dwindling elephant populations. While humanity continues working towards achieving more sustainable practices globally, we also need to proactively safeguard elephant habitats wherever they exist, lest we gift to our progeny a future where elephants exist only as domesticated laborers, attractions in zoos, or as ancillary props and characters in video footage taken long ago. The Elephant Parade plays an important role in engendering heightened awareness of humanitys impacts upon elephant populations while also funding elephant conservation and the variety of efforts required to safeguard these gentle giants, who are said to have no natural predators except human beings. At the same time as supporting elephant conservation in its many forms, Elephant Parade is a unique union of contemporary art with conservation. It is my pleasure to invite you to participate in Elephant Parade Singapore, an effort allowing the appreciation of two forms of art simultaneously: the art crafted by human hands in decorating the elephant replicas as well as the art nature has created in the genus Elephas, or elephants. ABOUT ELEPHANT PARADE

Elephant Parade is the worlds largest open air art exhibition of decorated elephant statues that seeks to attract public awareness and support for Asian elephant conservation. Created by local and international artists, each elephant is a unique piece of art. After the exhibition, most elephants are auctioned by a renowned auction house. Part of all proceeds from Elephant Parade auctions is donated to The Asian Elephant Foundation. Mission It is Elephant Parades mission to become the worlds largest financial support organization for the Asian elephant, threatened with extinction. The open air art exhibitions create worldwide attention, public awareness and support for the cause of elephant conservation: the elephant statues never go unnoticed by the wider public and mass media. How it all began... Elephant Parade was created by father and son Marc and Mike Spits in 2006. In Thailand Marc met a baby elephant named Mosha, who had lost her leg after stepping on a landmine. Mosha inspired Marc to create Elephant Parade: I wanted to do something structural, something that would be profitable in the long run. Only in that way we can provide the Asian elephant a future". Soon after Marc engaged his son Mike to help bring his idea of Elephant Parade to fruition. A Worldwide Success Elephant Parade proved to be hugely successful. Since the start, the unique Elephant Parade concept made it possible to contribute over 4 million euros in support of its mission. Monies are used for projects varying from elephant hospitals and restoration of vital corridors of land to lobbying governments and research. To date many Asian elephants have been saved and cured, but there are still thousands more that need our support.

ElEphant talk with BjarnE ClausEn,

internationally renowned expert in the field of elephant conservation and member of the board of trustees of the asian elephant foundation. what's your passion for the asian elephant? I feel very strongly towards all creatures, that due to human activity are threatened beyond dignity. The various species should have the right to share the planet with humans, and as humans it is our duty to ensure this right. We have to keep our planet balanced, secure its richness. tell us about your working experience with this endangered species? what has it been like? To be frank, working with endangered species is often quite depressing. All over the world, biodiversity as well as numbers are decreasing due to human activity. As conservationists, we learn to be happy about our small victories and learn to continue our work even when we experience big defeats. Whats so fascinating about working with elephants is that it is a species that is so big in size that it cannot be controlled by force, but only by cooperation between man and elephant. what do you think is the biggest threat to the asian elephant? The biggest threat for elephants in the wild is the human pressure on their habitat, and the fragmentation of elephant populations that is caused by this pressure. what do you think is the best solution to this problem? The single most important thing is land: land where the Asian elephant can live in peace. Each elephant needs a few square miles of living space: in other words, the space that is needed has to be of considerable size. Also, the people that live on the borders of these pieces of land have to accept and respect the rights of the elephants living there.

The AsiAn elephAnT

A sias largest land mammal is a wonderful curiosity of nature that has provided inspiration, perhaps more than any other animal, for artists, poets and writers for thousands of years throughout the world. The Asian elephant is much loved for its quirky appearance and strong and emotional personality. It is universally admired by all ages for its wisdom, loyalty and its gentleness. It is the ambassador of Asias forests. But today the Asian elephant is critically endangered. Over the last 100 years, the number of Asias wild elephants has fallen by a catastrophic 90%. Numbers have plummeted to just 35,000 with the greatest loss, almost 150,000, in the last 25 years alone. Unless radical steps are taken, conservationists predict that in just 30 years, natures great masterpiece will become extinct. Joining hands with The Asian Elephant Foundation gives Elephant Parade the guarantee that the money raised is spent in the best manner.

As my work is known for its representation of koi fish from the Prosperity Collection, and Feng Shui, it was important to me to also reflect this in her style. She is adorned with 35 koi fish swimming in a northerly direction, which in Feng Shui numbers tallies down to the number 8, the recognized number for prosperity, the name of my collection. Drawing from the principles of Feng Shui and my art, you will also notice that I have created swirls of water across the elephant to create the illusion of the flowing water. Inspiration We present this elephant in its full strength and glory as a metaphor, embodying the might of New Asia, representing the global shift from West to East with the emergence of the powerful forces of China and India. The elephant has been symbolically split into two halves, each side representing China and India respectively; Mao and Gandhi, being the two major icons of each of these nations, are seen to be initiating a narrative of what challenges New Asia faces as it marches ahead ruling the 21st century. This elephant embodies an enthusiasm for our New Asia and our modern world and I hope it shall be a very colorful and somewhat thoughtprovoking part of the first ever Asian installation of The Elephant Parade in Singapore. Little Hairy was inspired by an emotional response to the issue of animal cruelty. He was named based on the word berbulu, a Malay word literally translated as hairy a local slang that connotes sense of annoyance and dejected. But Little Hairy was far from being in such state of affair. He was a paradoxical little messenger, the antithesis of the cruelty and unjust. The psychedelic fur signifies the positive energy Little Hairy brings to the tormented world.

The start point for the elephant was the Indonesian batik from the fabrics of Edward Hutabarat. We wanted to incorporate a contemporary feel to these designs. I found some photos of the skeleton of a young bird and used this image alongside the design of the batik flowers to show two contrasting and yet beautiful designs. The use of the fluorescent paint gives the elephant another dimension by night, its appearance will again be transformed into a more geometric construction, echoing the form of the sculpture itself, in contrast to the more organic treatment by day.

The word Sa-nook symbolizes the fun and enjoyment of being part of Elephant Parade.

Yunnan
Fifi Bijoux
Inspiration Ive named the elephant Yunnan, after the province in China where the freshwater pearls are farmed (also a home to elephants). The pearls are circling around the elephant pattern: this represents the fine balance of nature, which must be respected, and the cross-over and inter-dependency of eco-systems. I have decorated Yunnans face with Celtic love knots, a tribute to my Scottish heritage and also to the focus on sustainability and careful management of natural resources, which is so vital to the survival of indigenous communities. This co-dependency is something which is easily lost in development and yet its critical to the future. The love (or trinity) knots are usually associated with the interconnectedness of humankind within the universe. To me, its symbolic of the eternity of nature and the space which we occupy. On the riverbanks, they dug the sand to form a natural pool, with an arrangement of rocks. They used coconut leaves as a divider, to protect from other peoples view. This questions the elephants in both their existence and separation from us humans.

Although this is the largest land animal, they are helpless in todays world. Elephant Parade is a great channel to show my sentiments that no amount of riches can justify the killing of our beloved elephants.

The Elephant and the Cat

Paul Koh
Inspiration Just as the Elephant Parade travels from country to country, The Elephant and the Cat is inspired by the notion of us living beings as travelers on a journey. Metaphorically, it puts the wild Asian elephant and the city cat as travel companions traversing the beauty of this planet. The very essence of travel, the intuitive closeness to nature as well as the natural bond between the travelers is embodied in the paintings within the elephant. Hopefully, the moment we stop to look at the elephant is also the very moment we can stop to encounter each other, to meet, to love and to share.

The Eleg(ph)ant Cage

Inspiration

Andrea Di Cesare and Luca Di Cesare (Di Cesare Design)

Prisoner, captive and clandestine being. With no home, just a cage sewn on the body like a tailored elegant suit. The artwork aims to play with the concept of the adjective elegant, as the mask that covers the cruel hunting of the blind tailor, who cuts and sews the perfect suit. Cuts and sews. Cuts the relationship that naturally links the elephant with his habitat. And sews a skin-tight cage that leaves no way out. The most elegant way to be a hunter. The net is made of a special light-sensitive painting that in the darkness of night will brighten, while the elephant body will disappear, extinguished. The animal will disappear, the shining elegant cage will last in the darkness of the mind, will blind us with its bright attractive amusing effect, will delete any memory. The elephant is symbol of wisdom and longevity, memories and hope. In that cage we close our past and as well as our future identity. Rhema Events & Arts Services Pte Ltd

Siegfried, a warrior prince in the epic Germanic myth The Song of the Nibelungs, became invincible when bathing in dragon blood. During the ceremony a leaf from a linden tree fell onto his bare back leaving the only vulnerable spot on his body. It was this spot that he was later deceitfully attacked upon and brought about his death. On the elephants back we find such a spot. Referencing to Siegfried, the spot symbolizes vulnerability despite strong and seemingly invincible stature. This reference extends further to the lower extremities which are uncovered.

Memento Mori

(Sherman Ong, Agnes Christina, Bridget Tan, Catherine Chia)

It has been said that an elephant never forgets. This work deals with the elephants memory; memories that have been passed down across generations, from the first elephants that walked the earth, remembering the events they had to encounter through the centuries. We hope to make the elephant look and feel as if it is carved from a piece of rock with cave paintings on it; almost as if to say it connects with the first civilizations and humans who put their first memories and stories on the cave walls. These cave drawings mark the beginnings of the need and urge to leave the stories from our elders for future generations as we share this planet with these amazing giants. ABN AMRO Private Banking

Qi (Breath of Life)
Frances Alleblas
Inspiration The breathers painted on the elephant represent the Qi (Chi) or breath of life. I want to suggest that we humans can breathe life and energy back into the abused and endangered elephants. This Daoist approach also conveys my conviction that elephants are most happy in their natural environment doing what they do of themselves. Therefore, I dont want to paint the elephant as a toy or tool of human beings - such as elephant in circuses, zoo, workers, entertainers, vehicles - but as an animal that stands on its own; to leave it just being what it is.

White Elephant
Allan Balisi
Inspiration Since Im a big fan of David Lynch movies, I decided to cover the elephant with white canvas, like from his movie The Elephant Man. It is more like a shy or terrified elephant. It also represents the anonymity and sense of helplessness of the elephant when it is slaughtered for its ivory. The all-white cloth covers the elephants identity; his right to live is taken away from him because of the greed of mankind. I covered it in white cloth to represent ivory, which is the primary reason they are killed.
