SOTHEbyS
AucTION PARTNER
Sothebys is honored to be a part of the Elephant Parades first ever Asian installation and to conduct the fund-raising auction for this initiative in Singapore. Following the tremendous success of the Elephant Parade in London in 2010, Sothebys is once again proud to support this worthwhile charitable cause and its move to this region. By introducing a number of influential Asian artists to this meaningful project such as Ronald Ventura and Christine Ay Tjoe, among others, we hope that the incredible talent and generosity of all the participating artists will draw attention to the plight of the endangered Asian elephant, and encourage more people to help to create a sustainable future for these beautiful creatures. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Elephant Parade for partnering with us on this project, and we hope that it will inspire others as much as it has inspired us.

As my work is known for its representation of koi fish from the Prosperity Collection, and Feng Shui, it was important to me to also reflect this in her style. She is adorned with 35 koi fish swimming in a northerly direction, which in Feng Shui numbers tallies down to the number 8, the recognized number for prosperity, the name of my collection. Drawing from the principles of Feng Shui and my art, you will also notice that I have created swirls of water across the elephant to create the illusion of the flowing water. She has a universal appeal, she is beautiful and elegant, and with her plume of feathers, she commands attention. She is the leader of the East. She is ShivakariThe Bringer of all things Auspicious.

Elephantasm
Ronald Ventura
Inspiration Ronald Ventura goes into elephantasm mode in this sculpture. For ages, the elephant has represented strength, power and the indomitable. But the artist looks at the enduring symbol differently, presenting a fiberglass depiction of an almost-skeletal piece of animal flesh, something headed toward a state of un-elephant-ness, totally something else. A parable for entropy? A riddle about physicality and decay? Ventura puts the puzzling into parade.

Fifi Bijoux
Inspiration Ive named the elephant Yunnan, after the province in China where the freshwater pearls are farmed (also a home to elephants). The pearls are circling around the elephant pattern: this represents the fine balance of nature, which must be respected, and the cross-over and inter-dependency of eco-systems. I have decorated Yunnans face with Celtic love knots, a tribute to my Scottish heritage and also to the focus on sustainability and careful management of natural resources, which is so vital to the survival of indigenous communities. This co-dependency is something which is easily lost in development and yet its critical to the future. The love (or trinity) knots are usually associated with the interconnectedness of humankind within the universe. To me, its symbolic of the eternity of nature and the space which we occupy. I took the name from Sumbawa, my native language as well as my birthplace. Ai means water, and Buin means a bathing place on the riverbanks. In the past, people in Sumbawa bathed in the river; both young and old, but the men and women had their own separate locations. They did not plunge directly into the river like the children, though. On the riverbanks, they dug the sand to form a natural pool, with an arrangement of rocks. They used coconut leaves as a divider, to protect from other peoples view. This questions the elephants in both their existence and separation from us humans.

Siegfried, a warrior prince in the epic Germanic myth The Song of the Nibelungs, became invincible when bathing in dragon blood. During the ceremony a leaf from a linden tree fell onto his bare back leaving the only vulnerable spot on his body. It was this spot that he was later deceitfully attacked upon and brought about his death. On the elephants back we find such a spot. Referencing to Siegfried, the spot symbolizes vulnerability despite strong and seemingly invincible stature. This reference extends further to the lower extremities which are uncovered.

Qi (Breath of Life)
Frances Alleblas
Inspiration The breathers painted on the elephant represent the Qi (Chi) or breath of life. I want to suggest that we humans can breathe life and energy back into the abused and endangered elephants. This Daoist approach also conveys my conviction that elephants are most happy in their natural environment doing what they do of themselves. Therefore, I dont want to paint the elephant as a toy or tool of human beings - such as elephant in circuses, zoo, workers, entertainers, vehicles - but as an animal that stands on its own; to leave it just being what it is.

White Elephant
Allan Balisi
Inspiration Since Im a big fan of David Lynch movies, I decided to cover the elephant with white canvas, like from his movie The Elephant Man. It is more like a shy or terrified elephant. It also represents the anonymity and sense of helplessness of the elephant when it is slaughtered for its ivory. The all-white cloth covers the elephants identity; his right to live is taken away from him because of the greed of mankind. I covered it in white cloth to represent ivory, which is the primary reason they are killed.

We use postage stamps to dress up Baby Emily because postage stamps have helped man to communicate for centuries. Inspiration Everyone can play a part to protect what is left of the Asian elephants and reverse the population decline. I want to bless them with a protective armour of colorful guardian angels to ensure that they will survive and flourish.

Inspiration I am inspired by the local signage Danger, Keep Out. My work has a double meaning: It tells us to keep away from our local construction site area, as well as to leave the elephants alone. To me danger was built and caused by human beings.

Dont Forget
Glen Goei
Inspiration There is a well known saying that elephants never forget so I use the words Dont Forget to remind ourselves that we should never forget the elephants.
Ikons
Inspiration
Karim Rashid
My Ikons are an alphabet, a contemporary hieroglyphic, a personal code, that I have developed over 20 years. The symbols are non-lingual therefore not biased and anyone and everyone could interpret them as they saw fit. The beauty of abstraction will always be self-interpretation and higher spiritual meaning. Words are precise and forms are vague. The Elephant Parade brings so much joy to the world and I hope the globe can understand and enjoy my Ikons and strive for my goal for a global oneness.

Swampy Jane

Inspiration All animals should be respected in their own environment. Its all well and good dressing them up in jewels if you want to make a spectacle of them; however, I feel theyre more beautiful without all that manmade extra decoration. I find the most beautiful things in life to be the most natural and untouched. I like to think of this little elephant wading through the rivers and grass that she is happiest living in.
Not Forgotten
Michael Han & Kiat
Inspiration This elephant rests uneasily in a decaying state as concrete jungles overtake its natural environment in the process, overtaking its form as its expression depicts the tension between our world and theirs.

Sommar
Prints
Inspiration Sommar means summer in Swedish, and this design makes me think of my childhood Swedish summers. Nature dresses up in vibrant colors with flowers blooming from late spring to early autumn. It is a lovely time. As we all know everyone must share the responsibility of taking care of our nature if we are able to keep it as beautiful as it is now. Today many cumstomers are indeed active and make decisions that influence companies and organisations to strive for a better future. With this design Prints wants to be a joyful inspiration to everyone that all our actions count, everyday!
Mangrove
Marisa Keller
Inspiration A black and white linocut of a mangrove forest was the inspiration for the design of the elephant. Like the elephants, the mangrove forests are suffering under the impact of human activities too. My hope is that both will be part of Earths future.

Inspired from the idea of elephants dipping into mud to bathe and to refresh, but mine is dipping into different colors of paint. These paints represents different nations, different ideas, different disciplines, principles, emotions, etc. In a much deeper sense it represent the world we live in, presented as lines intersect each other like lives intertwined and ideas interconnected. Making new forms, conflicts and probable resolutions as lines touch each other and continues the flow or colors complimenting each other to form new perspectives.
