BOOKS! BOOKS!

The FOL Book Store is ready for the Holiday Shopping Season! An entire wall has been set up with a wonderful display of gently-used (and many times brand sparking new!) Children's and Adult selec- tions ready for sale to those clever Library users who check out the Book Store shelves.

Shoppers coming in off the streets are very welcome too. The volunteer clerks are con- stantly amazed at the pleasure

of the "new" customers who are just discovering this treasure. Many of them are customers of the summer Book Sale and enjoy the opportunity of purchasing books and materials in such a pleasant manner. Browsing is the name of the game at the Book Store.

And that browsing will help you find just the right thing for yourself or for a gift. While Children's Books are the big seller (over three thousand so far this year), Adult Fiction sales are well over two thousand items.

Whatever interest you have, someone will have do- nated a book about it to the Library and if it is in good enough shape to resell, it will appear on the Book Store's shelves. From Civil War and Cooking to Women's Studies, come and look, you will surely find something to please you.

State Budget done!

By Rob Lesher Library Director

Now, we are onto providing great service to the residents of Adams County.

I would like to start this article by asking each of our friends to do a favor for the library. Please call the commissioners office and thank them for their continued support of the Library System. Without the wonderful relationship we have with the County Commissioners and their support, we would not be able to continue to provide good library service in the county.

The State budget is passed and signed and it will impact libraries in Adams County. The final budget reduced the library subsidy by a little more than 20%. Although very bad, it was a lot better than some proposals being supported in Harrisburg which called for a 50% reduction in the library subsidy. The library subsidy is the money given directly to public libraries to provide service.

Unfortunately, the library support items in the State budget which pay for POWERLibrary, AccessPA Library Card, Ask- Here PA, Interlibrary Loan and Delivery services were cut by 75%. This cut was one which was a bit surprising to the library community. These services are relied on by students and library users through out the state.

So, let’s look at the dollars and cents of this. In simple terms, it means that the Adams County Library System will receive $200,000 less this year than last year. With very slow growth in the county population, we do not see any ability to make that up in county money. Therefore, this will require cuts in library services.

The Administration has been instructed to streamline all operations and present a plan which does not destroy the excellent library services which Adams County residents have come to expect. We are to minimize the impact on all residents and look at what is best for the entire county.

I would like to THANK YOU as a Friend of the Adams

County Library System for your personal support of the library. If you have not renewed your membership for next year please consider doing that today. If you have renewed your membership, consider giving a membership to a friend as a Christmas present. These memberships provide 1/3 of the income which the Friends give to the Library System each year. Those funds are used to continue vital programs such as buying best sellers and research materials needed by county residents.

FRIENDS COMPLETE $60,000 PLEDGE

The annual meeting of the Friends of the Library was held recently. The 2010 budget was adopted and it contained the annual pledge of $60,000 to the Adams County Library System. The final payment of this year's pledge, $20,000, was presented to Library Director Rob Lesher at this meeting.

Ila Verdirame, president, explained that the pledged amount comes from three separate activates of FOL, each raising approximately one-third of the total. These activities are:

Membership dues and gifts; Profit from the Book Store, Monies earned from the summer Used Book Sale held each August. ALSO:

Talking about books 

Book discussion groups are becoming very popular everywhere, according to a recent survey of leisure time activities. The Adams County Library System is offering a number of such groups and all are open to the public and all meet at the individual Libraries, whether it is your “home” library or not, but a phone call ahead will help with the library’s arrangements.

Arendtsville ( 677-0444) continues to discuss forming a Book Discussion group. Please talk with Peter if you are interested in this. Biglerville (677-6257) will meet at 6:30 PM December 3. They will discuss Family Tree by Barbara Delinksy. Fairfield (642-6009) will meet again on the 3rd Thursday in January. Gettysburg (334-5716) Bring-a-Book meets every third Monday at 10 a.m. This is a round table presentation with each participant reading or discussing parts of a book they are currently reading. Littlestown (359-0446) will meet December 21 at noon. The next selection is The Awakening by Kate Chopin New Oxford (624-2182) will meet on December 3 at 11 AM. They are reading Plum Island by Nelson Demille. East Berlin (259-9000) is not meeting in December. They will meet the 4th Tuesday at 7PM

And then, a phone call to Mary Beth Stamm (338-1948) to sign up for the summer Book Sale will guarantee you your chosen time to work on

this exciting and very profitable venture. Books for next season are already being packed and stored and you could join this crew as well.
