The Friends of the Adams County Library System

Gettysburg, PA - Winter 2008

First they are screened by a crew oI
volunteers who bravely work in the
garage in all types oI weather. Books
are divided by subject and those that
are current and in very good
condition are pulled Ior the Friends
Store. The rest are boxed and held
Ior the annual sale.
Once in the store, another volunteer
scrutinizes each book to determine iI
it is one that can be used and then
prices it according to a general
guideline. Children`s books are
usually given a light cleaning. There
are volunteers who specialize in
children`s books, Iiction, general
nonIiction and history. Other
volunteers add the books to the
shelves.
Occasionally a rare or antiquarian
book comes along. Depending on the
subject, it is either priced Ior the
store or auctioned on eBay. For ex-
ample, rare Civil War books are hot
sellers in the store, whereas some-
thing 'kitsch like a series oI 1960s
Dark Shadows paperbacks do best
on eBay.
So no matter whether it is in the
annual sale, the Store, or on eBay,
your book Iinds a good home.

I hope you have had a chance to take
a look at the library system`s new
website since it was updated in Janu-
ary. The new site will help us to
more easily bring library service into
your home by the use oI your com-
puter.

So what are some oI the Ieatures oI
the Adams County Library System
website? OI course you can look Ior
books and other materials which the
library owns. Click on the link which
either says Iind books, web catalog
or you can type in a title in the dia-
log box titled 'looking Ior some-
thing? Any oI these will search our
catalog and tell you iI we own some-
thing.

II you do not have a library card, you
can register Ior a library card by
clicking on the link called get a card.
You Iill out the inIormation we need
to register you Ior a valid card. It
then gets emailed to our circulation.
They will issue a card and mail it to
you.

We also oIIer a number oI electronic
inIormation services on the web site.
These include MyLibraryDV which
allows you watch videos and movies
online, Proquest Culturegrams which
give you inIormation about countries
which you may be traveling to, Heri-
tagequest Online which has geneal-
ogy inIormation and census inIorma-
tion, and Work Book Online which
is the complete World Book Ency-
clopedia in electronic Iormat. All
you need Ior any oI these is an Ad-
ams County Library Card.

This is an exciting time in the library
world as the American Library Asso-
ciation has just announced the New-
bery / Caldecott award winners and
others. (www.ala.org) I'm so proud
to say that our libraries have copies
oI all these winning titles. They have
reordered multiple copies Ior all oI
you who want to read them. I just
want to curl up with these good
books and a warm cup oI cocoa. Will
any oI you write a note to my school
district and tell them that I'm not
coming to school because I'm read-
ing? Thanks so much!

At our recent meeting oI the FOL,
we can proudly report that the book-
store is busy thanks to Ray and the
many volunteers! I'm so thankIul Ior
the generous donations so that we
can support our library and our com-
munity. Please spread the word to
your Iriends and Iamilies that we are
in need oI donations oI new and
slightly used books, recorded books,
tapes and DVD's Ior the store and
the annual book sale. Mark your cal-
endars Ior August 6, 7, 8, & 9, 2008
at the Gettysburg Middle School

One oI the most proIitable
enterprises oI FOL is its recycling
program which has raised more than
$4,000 over the past Iour years.
Individual and corporate donors drop
oII inkjet and laser toner cartridges
and cell phones at any oI the various
branches oI the Adams Library
System. FOL Board member Ray
Pollock gathers, prepares, and
delivers all items to Cartridge World
in Hanover which sends the checks
that substantially help the Friends`
"bottom line" as we work toward our
Iinancial commitment to the Library.
We appreciate all oI your help, so
please keep these discards coming!

Book discussion groups are becoming very popular everywhere, according to a
recent survey oI leisure time activities. The Adams County Library System is
oIIering a number oI such groups and all are open to the public and all meet at
the individual Libraries.

FairIield (642-6009) Meets 3rd Monday oI each month at 7 p.m.
Middlesex, by JeIIrey Eugenides will be discussed on February 18.

Gettysburg (334-5716) Bring-a-Book meets every third Monday at 10 a.m.
Bring-a-Book is not a discussion oI one book by the group, but a round table
presentation with each member reading or discussing parts oI a book they are
currently reading.

Littlestown (359-0446) Meets 3rd Friday oI each month at 11 a.m.
The Emancipators Wife by Barbara Hambley, will be discussed on February 15.

New OxIord (624-2182) Meets 1st Thursday oI each month at 9 a.m.
Hunting Badger, Tony Hillerman will be discussed on February 7.
The New OxIord Bring-a-Book ( see above) will meet the 3rd Thursday oI each
month at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 21 is the next meeting.

East Berlin (259-9000) Meets the 4th Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Losing Mv Mind, Thomas Debaggio will be discussed on February 26.

The website oI the Adams County
Library System can really be viewed
as another branch. It can provide al-
most all oI the same services which
you can get by walking into a library
in the county. It is really a great place
to see what the library is doing and
what activities we have in which you
want to participate.
