HRE 4M1 : Culminating Performance Task You are required to investigate a contemporary moral issue of your choice.

You will employ senior level social science research skills in your task of responding to your proposed question relating to your topic. Your response will become your thesis for a final essay. As part of your research, you will need church documents that are focused in whole or on part of your topic. Essentially, in the essay you will have to provide: a. A thesis statement and overview of your essays intentions in the essays introduction. b. Present the Catholic viewpoint on your chosen moral issue: you may ONLY use papal encyclicals, catechism or church documents. c. A review of two supporting viewpoints from non-Catholic sources on your moral issue d. A review of two opposing viewpoints from non-Catholic sources on your moral issue e. 2 paragraphs which apply 2 concepts from the course to your essay topic. f. Your personal evaluation of and position on the issue g. A conclusion summarizing your achievement of your objectives

For both parts of this CPT (A & B), you will be required to communicate a moral understanding of your issue. All parts will be evaluated. Note: Students must submit Part A on time and receive written/oral direction from the teacher in order for Part B to be evaluated. Parts A and B cannot be submitted simultaneously.

CPT Part A: Formal Research (Annotated Bibliography) Due Date:____________________ This process is used to develop your final product, which is your formal essay. You will submit the following to your teacher: 1. A statement describing which moral topic you have chosen. 2. Your thesis question. A thesis question is an actual question which does not have an obvious answer. Example Topic: Space Exploration and Risk Good thesis question: Is space exploration in manned spacecrafts worth the risk? This is a good question because the student will have to weigh the benefits of space exploration against the risk to human life a moral issue. An understanding of the risks and benefits requires in-depth research. Bad thesis question: Is space exploration in manned spacecrafts risky? This is a bad questions because there is no moral component to the research. A yes or no answer to the question has no moral dimension. Furthermore, it is general knowledge that manned space exploration is risky so the answer is obvious. 3. At least 6 supporting questions that can help answer this thesis question. 4. Submit citations/references of 5 resources according to the guidelines below. Note: 2 of your sources MUST be hard copy sources. - You MUST use papal encyclicals, catechism or official church documents when you represent the Catholic view. 5. Write a summary and critical response for each of the 5 sources that you cite according to the following instructions: Source summary and response instructions Based on the topic you have chosen, you will prepare a detailed summary and critical response to your chosen 5 specific resources. EACH will include: a. Accurate referencing / citation of the source (MLA format) b. A summary and critical response containing: 1. A general summary of the source. 2. How you are going to use the source within the context of your issue. Length: Each summary and response must be typed, double-spaced, with size 12 font. All 5 must be handed in together with the source citation on the assigned due date.
